Who should run for the Dems?

It's pronounced "NewScum" if you haven't already heard He may be a little too liberal for the country right now, but I have no doubt that he will at least try to be a contender.

Gavin Newsom? He'd have a hard time defending his fiscal record first and foremost (the state is running a budget deficit of $30-plus billion per year and is over $158 billion in debt), not to mention the debacle of the state's response to the LA wild fires, spending millions on slavery reparations (even though California was never a slave state and even though the bill does not require recipients to prove they had ancestors who were slaves), his admission that forcing female athletes to compete against male athletes is unfair while refusing to do anything about it, his police-state COVID measures, his support of allowing teachers and counselors not to tell parents if their children are expressing an interest in gender "transition," his feckless response to homeless camps virtually taking over parts of cities, his use of taxpayer dollars to pay for transgender surgeries, etc., etc.

Yeah, good luck with that. And allow me to suggest that Tim Walz be Newsom's running mate.
Runnung Gavin Newsom means handing the election to JD Vance, so, yeah, that's who the Democrats will run.

The guy who called Trump "America's Hitler"? That little marshmallow will get eaten alive in a general election.

If enough people remain stupid enough to make JD Vance a viable candidate after watching the administration he was part of destroy everything it touches, it won’t matter really matter who runs against him.

If Diaper Don anoints He Who Is Banned from Ikea as his successor, who can stand against him.

True., he doesn't have any loyalty to anybody but himself. That's assuming he doesn't try to run for a third term himself.

I believe he already said he's not committed to endorsing Vance in 2028. Maybe because Donald Jr is said to be be considering a run in 2028.

At least Vance is playing the part of loyal lapdog on every issue, just in case.

Gotta say, AOC and Bernie are pretty much the dynamic duo on their "end oligarchy" tour. I'd vote for them in spite of her age.
AOC, no way. Bernie -- still not seeing it as he's about as far left and Newsom if not further.

Interesting the California democrats are a lot less enthusiastic about Newsom then out of state Demos.
Because he's a hack. No core beliefs. His actions during COVID (laying off plastic shopping bags, attending a wedding unmasked with other rich people), his changing his tune on trans athletes, and waiting until SCOTUS ruled on homeless evictions to allow cities and counties to remove homeless encampments (and then mandating that they do so), along with ignoring environmental laws when it suits at pet project make him repellant. The problem is the GOP in this state are equally worthless at every level. During the recall, they ran Larry Elder, a talkshow host along with some other clown. Just like they backed former baseball player, Steve Garvey for US Senate. It's like if they're not on TV, candidates don't exist.

And California is fairly conservative once you get out of San Francisco/Bay Area, and Los Angeles as witnessed by voters shooting down affirmative action in 2020, killing an initiative to end prison labor, and repealing a badly thought out law that forced law enforcement to go soft on most crime. The GOP owned the governor's office up until Gray Davis was elected, and then kicked out.

America needs to get past the whole, "Looks good on TV" BS. Biden was in NYC last week for a Broadway play, and he was animated, and talkative, and all the things we were told he was not when the party kicked him out. Newson is just Trump, but with more tact.

A lot depends on what the party wants to become. Do they want to be the party of the working class, as they had been since at least the days of FDR? The working class has deserted them in droves. It started with the white working class, but in 2024 Trump nearly won the Hispanic working class and made significant inroads with the Black working class. There is an argument to be made that a candidate with a more populist economic message (like Sanders or AOC) could draw those voters back, but it also might require a bit of self-discipline on the social issues. Gavin Newsom pointed out in a recent interview that Democrats tend to be judgmental, and that this has made their brand increasingly toxic among the working class.
Or do they stay the neoliberal course of their most successful recent presidents (Clinton and Obama, who finessed the social issues rather well)? Newsom himself is probably the epitome of that type of candidate.

Corey Booker just outlasted Strom Thurmond's record of longest Senate floor speech (in opposition to Civil Rights), over 24 hours.

Makes me think he might be thinking for a run.

Newsom isn't far left. He's not even left. He's a 'Bill-Maher Democrat'.
Gavin Newsom Sparks Backlash After Calling Democrats 'Toxic' (Newsweek, Mar 30, 2025)
California Governor Gavin Newsom received backlash online for his Friday comments about the Democratic Party when he called its brand "toxic" and criticized some in the party who are unwilling to "have a conversation" with their Republican counterparts during an interview with comedian and talk show host Bill Maher.
A spokesperson for the governor's office directed Newsweek to Newsom's comments during the Maher interview.

MAGA dreams of racing against AOC. She would be the gift that keeps on giving. Dems need to move back to the center.

biden/harris was the back to the center guys. didn’t seem to help them. running a more progressive candidate is something that’s never even been attempted

going back to the thing they never stopped trying and has already failed is such a weird position to be so certain about imo

You think super-Progressive agendas will bring Independents back to Blue?

Define super-progressive. School lunch programs? Union protections? Environmental protections? Taxing billionaires? Less money for war? Civil rights protections? Expanding healthcare? Infrastructure spending?

Personally, I think Democrats running like they aren't ashamed to be Democrats would bring a lot of independents.
