Trump's promised ICE raids have begun

Arizona isn't the only one. Here's another example in Kern County, California:

In the early days of President Trump’s first administration, several Kern County organizations launched a tip line people could contact if they spotted immigration enforcement activities underway.
Nearly three weeks ago, the hotline started ringing again. In panicked voices, callers reported witnessing U.S. Border Patrol agents questioning Latinos in parking lots and gas stations — and detaining people in large numbers. In some cases, they said, a loved one had been detained.
The Rapid Response Network of Kern sprung into action. Organization staff and volunteers fanned out across the Bakersfield area — to a Home Depot, a swap meet and other locations where the Border Patrol had been spotted. As they confirmed the raids, they attempted to document the scenes, including any violations of rights or use of force, as well as recording the names of people being detained and interviewing witnesses...

Love you guys and we have visited the USA many times and enjoyed it. But we (i.e. our family) have decided we are not visiting again until Trump is dead and gone, and this MAGA stupidity is reversed. It's just too dangerous now.
Same. The US is going to have to become a heck of a lot more stable and sane before I go back.

The whole point of America being the "greatest country in the world" is that it should be a nice place to be. If it's not then what's the point? Are we going to be great if we make our own country so unpleasant nobody would even want to be here?
But everybody wants to be an American. Haven't you heard?

You know a seven-second google search proves what you're saying isn't true, right? Would you like me to link to some of the studies that disprove your claim? Or did you want to continue living in your little fantasy realm where things are true because say they are?
Never expect rational discourse from fascists and their supporters.

Same. I bought a piece of land in Florida several years ago with the intention of building a winter vacation home that I could rent out when not in use. But its up for sale now. I no longer want to have anything to do with the USA

A long time ago after I got my bachelors, I moved to Florida, there to write, enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, try a Hemingway thing. I purchased 8 building lots, planning a rambling ranch, and a lot full of tropical fruits and palms. Then I got wind of the fetid local politcs, the embedded racism, the burgeoning of the religious right; I got out, selling my lots, and setting up in a blue state. I am now in no way confident it is a safe state, considering the authoritarian, know nothing nature of the current administration, the obsequious legislature, and the fawning, corrupt judicial. Add to that the maga weirdos, emboldened by Donnie Diapers' complete lack of consequence, and that of the violent Jan 6 criminals, who knows what vigilantism they might get up to.

Expect a lot confusion as people conflate various terms. There's a difference between finding adjudicated violent criminals vs. rounding up people without documents, just as there is a difference between "illegal immigrants" and people who turned themselves in at a port of entry to begin asylum proceedings.

The differences are too in the weeds for vast sectors of the news media, let alone the average American reader.

Then there are those who conflate these terms on purpose to manipulate public opinion.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom said his officers will not be arresting or detaining people solely on the basis of an immigration violation.

Winstrom made the comment Thursday, Jan. 23, during a Grand Rapids City Commission retreat.

His statement came as President Donald Trump looks to crack down on illegal immigration and possibly conduct mass deportations.

“The Grand Rapids Police Department is not in the business of immigration enforcement, period,” Winstrom said.

“We want people to feel comfortable calling 911, especially victims coming forward, without the fear of information regarding their documentation status being provided to immigration authorities,” he said

“We are not to inquire about immigration status. We’re not asking about it. Even if it was proactively provided to us, we are prohibited from detaining based on immigration status,”

“We’ve made it clear to them, as well, that there’s a very clear dividing line. We’re going to be doing our job, and it’s not going to be doing their job,” he said.

I was reading these comments in an MSN forum associated with a CNN produced video showing how deportations are done, and one maga weirdo crowed about it, and made the stupid comment that the lefty nutjobs should watch it to see how it's really done.

Well, guess what?

I had to laugh because (come to find out) it was filmed last year (2024) during the Biden administration.

The story below says 538 illegal immigrants have been arrested, but does that include the 308 mentioned earlier this week? If 538 is the total for the last four days, then it'll take 81,784 days to get ALL 11 million illegal immigrants deported. At this rate he'll be lucky to get 200,000 of them picked up by the end of his term

The two photos below show some people loading onto a plane, but how many there actually are is not mentioned. It does imply that the plane holds 80 people, but that might be a misdirection.

The thing is, it is likely that all those deported were arrested and detained during the Biden administration and were simply going through pre-deportation processing. It's going to get even harder from here.

Andy Zaltzman uses the term "assylagrants" in mockery of UK media who conflate every kind of arrival into one general, indiscriminate target for hate and fear.

That is definitely going to be something we see a lot of for the time being. Every news story will inevitably be slanted towards ideological preferences, so getting a clear picture of what is happening won't be simple.

Even these networks that assume to help illegal immigrants by publicizing raid locations etc are at risk of their own manipulations. What's to stop people from announcing excess raids simply to induce fear? Behavior is changing for people with little risk of deportation based on unvetted versions of stories.

It is going to take a while for the smoke to clear. For now I would caution accepting any salacious narrative from either side.

We have a lawless administration pursing their anti-immigrant policies in defiance of the Constitution.

Your “everyone calm down” sophistry can ◊◊◊◊ right off.

Or maybe I'd have to see the unconstitutional actions before calling them such. Not everyone believes enforcing the law is a negative. Just because you don't like something doesnt mean it can't, or shouldn't be done.
