Does Hillary have a chance in '08?

You have no idea. Lonlier than a fat guy at a pro-ana convention.

LOL!

Grammatron
Are you familiar with how the movie rating system works and the difference between that and Family Entertainment Protection Act?

If you mean the fines, etc., then yes. I have no objection to the porn industry either, but have no problem with fines for selling to minors.

This is, however, (pun intentional ) a minor issue for me.

See ya on the capitol steps with a lighter! (That one I care about more.)

Are you equating video games with porn? That's funny.

Personally I view this as a free speech issue and thus not a minor one.

Actually, Grammatron, I regard some of the more violent games as worse than porn. I guess we'll just have to disagree on this one. :)

Give me an example of one of those video games.

And what's so bad about porn?

Give me an example of one of those video games.

Anything where the goal is murder or violence. I had no concerns when Atari was state of the art. But the games are so graphic now, parents should have recourse to keep them out of their kids' hands if they so choose (if it makes you feel any better, I have always been pretty lenient when it came to video games and my own kids).

And what's so bad about porn?

As long as it's consenting adults, nothing. But, again, parents should be able to keep it away from their kids if they so choose.

Where is the child getting money from to buy the game? Where is the child playing that game? Seems the recourse here is quite simple if you choose to take it.

Same answer.

Look at it this way...

Can you think of a single 2004 red state that would choose Hillary rather than Kerry?

I can't.

Can you think of a blue state that would be less inclined to go for Hillary than Kerry?

I can: Wisconsin.

Therefore, on math alone, I would say that no, she doesn't have a chance.
I agree with Jocko 100%.

Regarding why? There is a subset of the religious right who will not vote for a women (no, not even Condi), because they believe the Bible says no women should have authority over a man. I know that for a fact. I attended different churches who believe that. Not only was a women minister not possible. They wouldn't even allow women to teach adult Sunday school classes. And yes, there is subset of men who wouldn't vote for a women (just cause they're a' holes, not because of religious reasons. That group may be offset by women who may vote for her simply because she is a women (just a hunch).

A Hillary run would mobilize the Republican base (read bright red states), like no other Democratic candidate would. If this happens, I predict a record Republican turn out and a Reagan/Carter like outcome.

Well you see my baseball-loving friend, if Mark doesn't view government mandating what media is offensive and should not be sold to "Well somebody think of the" children "!!!!" Then perhaps you should be concerned when Hillary Clinton tries to pass this as it just might. And don't think this will end at video games.

My 16 year old works and buys things with his own money. Should I have no recourse at all if someone is selling him something that I object to? Keeping in mind, I have not stopped him from buying these video games. I just think parents should be allowed to if they so choose.

Let's talk again when you are a parent. ;)

You are assigning views to me (again) that I have not said and actually disagree with. I will discuss this further when you read more carefully what I say.

Just so Grammatron doesn't feel picked on.

Let's talk now instead.

Where does he play those game? Odds are he plays them in your house.

One look at the existing, volantary, industry rating system on the video game and you would know if you should be concerned with what he is playing. If that is not enough you may check the game out yourself.

I am curious which part of this process is so difficult as to require assistance from the government

The issue is should there be fines for selling mature/violent/pornographic games to minors? That does not occur in my house. Of course I am responsible for checking what goes on in my house. Should that absolve a game dealer from responsibility for what goes on hin his store? No.

Childish insult aside, is it your contention then that a shop keeper should be able to sell hardcore porn to an 4 year old girl?

Why not? Are her parents so helpless that they need help from the government?

And it does not, there are penalties in place without the benefit of the government.

Only if it's girl-on-girl, obviously.

I do not thing she would win and I seriously doubt she would even get nominated. However, she is smart, independent, and capable, and a good politician (pardon the oxymoron).

The definition of insanity is "doing the same thing and expecting different results." Hillary would be something different.

Oddly enough I agree. I think she has a lot of time to make her play for the political center; the real test will be if the Dems buy it and nominate her. She'll get 100% of the "not Bush" vote. Also if the Repubs keep coming off like incompetent, secretive, immoral louts as they seem to have since Katrina she might have a lot easier time of it.

You also might want to consider the fact that there will be a great deal of voters on both sides that would feel a sense of history (or "herstory" perhaps?) in Hillary's nomination. Some folks are going to want to be able to say that they voted for America's first female POTUS.

Think Reagan/Mondale, but throw Minnesota the other way, and I think you're closer. ;)
