Ed The JD Vance thread

Vance's real problem is he is sseen in much of the GOP as a pure opportunist

Point well taken.
And maybe Vance is Wormtongue?

How the Dems did not parade this article on every news outlet and ad for the whole campaign is beyond me--JD Vance made a spot on assessment of Trump and Trumpism 8 years ago:
Atlantic Article

"During this election season, it appears that many Americans have reached for a new pain reliever. It too, promises a quick escape from life’s cares, an easy solution to the mounting social problems of U.S. communities and culture. It demands nothing and requires little more than a modest presence and maybe a few enablers. It enters minds, not through lungs or veins, but through eyes and ears, and its name is Donald Trump" -JD Vance "The Opiate of the People"

Yep, after reading that article in the Atlantic, I think I've had an epiphany--Vance is far smarter than any of us thought. He certainly knows that Trump has progressive cognitive decline--senility setting in rapidly--and so he is simply biding his time waiting for the opportune moment to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Correction, Stewart played Gurney Halleck. Duncan was played by Richard Jordan

Back on topic, does Vance become POTUS because Trump finally has that stroke or heart attack, or through section 4 of the 25th amendment?
I think it will play out like the chaos at the top of the Bolshevik party after Lenin died, except this time there'll be no Stalin.

Remember, Vance was picked, not because he's a strong candidate who has his own faction to be placated. He was picked because he is weak, stupid and spineless. Even if he does nominally win out, it'll be Thiel's government.

agree with your conclusion, but I don't think he is stupid--did you read the Atlantic article i linked to? He was spot on with his analysis of Trumpism.

Remember the old, super-weirdo Dune movie? Trump will end up like that Navigator guy: a giant bloated bug-fetus creature, suspended in a tank of ketchup gas. He will fold space by farting fire out of his cloaca, which is also his mouth.
I think he would resemble the Baron Harkonnen more than a navigator.

That doesn't make him not stupid. Plus it is very rare for a politician to be allowed pen their own articles, generally you don't get anything better than the arrant nonsense of BoJo thd Clown.

Except he did not enter politics until several years after he wrote that article ;)

Mystifying to call JD stupid. He's from a poor broken home with a drug-addicted mother, but got himself to Yale, wrote a bestseller, then senator, now VP. That's merit all the way.

Indeed, I think he is confused between core intelligence and stupid beliefs or actions. To cite the classic example, Isaac Newton was obviously a genius, but also stupid for believing in alchemy and the occult. Trump actually is a more interesting case if you wanna argue intelligence. It is highly likely he cheated his way through school and hasn't really accomplished anything in an intelligent way. His belief in numerous conspiracy theories suggests he has low critical thinking skills. On the other hand, being such an accomplished conman required a certain level of intelligence, as devious as it may be. I've seen him rated him highly on intelligence based on his language etc, but it is also clear his cognitive abilities have rapidly declined in the last 8 years, so if he were to take an IQ test now for example, I strongly suspect it would be very low on the scale. And I can talk cause I'm sure I would score lower now than I did when I was younger and on the very high end of standardized tests and such. :giggle:

I believe JD Vance was placed there by billionaires to get the job they want done, done. This is because they aren't sure Trump is intelligent enough to get the oligarch's agenda accomplished. JD was created by billionaires to serve billionaires.

I recall long ago a prevailing racist opinion that attempted to justify segregation and similar attitudes, contrary to observable evidence, by playing on the distinction between intelligence and cleverness. The former, of course, is definable in part by unwillingness to observe it, and in part by tendentious "no-true-Scotsman" fallacies. But it's not entirely without merit, as AI, crazy people and idiot savants have occasionally demonstrated, and perhaps we should remember it here.

Or perhaps not bother with the complexities, and just say, "sure, he's intelligent, but he's still an ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊."

Yah, I could go for your last sentence.

As a slight aside--speaking of AI--that's how I knew months ago this election was a lost cause and that stupidity had taken over thanks to social media among other things. I'm a photographer, so I usually know immediately how to recognize AI images and you can generally identify the close calls with a simple reverse image search (since AI imagery is now available all over the web) In recent months, there has been an explosion of 'digital creator' pages on FB and IG, many apparently located overseas but claiming to be US-based, that post AI imagery which in turn they pass off as real photos of real subjects and locations for the purpose of generating views, likes, shares, and $. Meta is apparently completely unconcerned that so much false information is put out--maybe because they are so heavily invested in AI. These pages are gaining hundreds of thousands of followers and exposure. If you read the comments to these posts, while there are a handful of people who chastise the post for AI, the vast majority are of the "Wow--amazing!" "This is incredible--praise God" "God is Great!" "The glory of HIS creation" "I want to see this--it is beautiful!" type. And sure some of it is bots, but there are thousands upon thousands of people ingesting this misinformation, without the slightest hint of incredulity. It makes the Pseudo-archeological posts seem insignificant. But seeing it happen has convinced me that we have completely failed to promote critical thinking skills among the vast majority of society, and the results of this election certainly support that conclusion.

In a recent piece of his usual nonsensical take on everything, in this case suggesting that the belief Trump would lose means Trump is better than you thought and you missed a useful truth (presumably the unfortunate truth that the people are stupider than we'd feared is not the one he meant),....he (I mean Vance here, to be clear) astutely digs out a literary quote, "If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?" If, by chance, you find this statement less than helpful, you may not be alone. It comes from Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. It is the taunt used by the flamboyantly villainous hired killer Anton Chigurh, before he decerebrates his victim with a cattle bolt.

Pity he's only fictional,or he'd have made a good nominee for Attorney General.

Being an accomolished conman has two pathways, one is being able to convinvingly spin a lie to a lot of people, the other is to have enough money to hire those who can do the former. Guess which route T****y has taken?

well, lately, obviously the latter, but I grew up in NY, I've known about Drumpf a long time, he used to be a lot smoother. I think his early cons were mostly of the former kind.

I find myself feeling sorry for Vance. He thought VP meant power and influence, but it looks like Elon Musk is the king's favorite. It's not Vance on these pre-coronation calls to foreign heads of state, it's Musk.
