In my opinion, this one poll (albeit not huge, but national and fairly well-conducted) explains the National delusion perfectly.
Scroll down to figures 3 & 4 in particular. roughly 20 f****** percent of Americans believe or are unsure of the proposition that the 'earth is flat' or that 'the Apollo moon landing was faked'!! Roughly 20 f****** percent of Americans voted for Trump! Granted, some of the poll respondents were not voters, and when you look at the data, while the strong majority of the conspiracy believers were Trump supporters (not surprising) not all of them were. Nevertheless, it shockingly drives home the very clear point that a *significant* portion of Americans are naive, uneducated, just plain stupid. When you are surrounded by intelligent people, as I have been most of my life and probably many of the people on this forum as well, it is easy to forget just how many stupid people--people easily manipulated--are out there. The Gen Z/X numbers in the poll are most shocking--they are the ones most likely to believe in conspiracies like vaccines giving us microchips etc. And that, clearly, is the result of growing up on a diet of Youtube 'experts' and social media garbage. Sigh...
