Honestly, there's just a point where it's not worth it. No real harm, as in the protesters didn't actually kill anyone, didn't set buildings on fire with people inside of them, didn't engage in massive looting and rioting that injured bystanders. No real harm in comparison to the many innocent people seriously injured or harmed during the summer of "mostly peaceful" protests. But it's a pointless endeavor. You're going to believe whatever you already believe... and what you believe is that Jan 6 was just packed full of massive violence and horror. There's nothing at all I can say that will make any difference.

The violence, rioting, and looting that occurred over the summer of 2020 far exceed any harm that occurred on Jan 6. But facts don't matter, reasonability doesn't matter - not when it comes to anything that even vaguely brushes up against the bare suggestion of Trump. There's no objectivity in this topic.

I've always liked you, varwoche. I really don't like what politics has done to the US, or to my interactions with people that I respect. I find it extremely off-putting that I can respect the views of people who are Democrats (even progressives), I can understand where they're coming from... but somehow those same people cannot find an ounce of compassion or tolerance or even basic courtesy toward those of us who don't actively *hate* Trump. It's exhausting to constantly be called names and denigrated, to be vilified and faced with derision in this way. I don't even think it's acceptable to turn such vitriol against those few posters here who actually ARE Trump supporters. But it doesn't stop there, because the reality is that anyone who doesn't loudly and constantly proclaim their intense hatred of Trump are treated as if they're dog ◊◊◊◊.

What planet are you on? There are a huge number of americans who absolutely go around and tell everyone who they support. And they don't stop there - they tell everyone else who they should support too. And if those other people support someone else, they call them names.

I'm having a hard time reading your post as being objective. It might not be your intent, but the subtext seems to be "It's no problem if you're vocal about supporting Dems, but if you support anyone else, you should keep your mouth shut and not voice your views"

Because only dog ◊◊◊◊ would support someone that says and does the things Trump says and does. That's the point everyone has been making. If you support someone like that then it's saying WAY more about you than it does about them. Then to parrot his talking points? No one owes anyone respect. It's earned. Supporting Trump destroys any respect because Trump isn't worthy of respect.

This is how it goes though. After supporting such a vile man it's really YOU that's the victim, not the people he's going to victimize as you cheer him on. That's not to even say that a mass deportation would cost the US trillions and that doesn't even factor in the loss to agriculture, that's just building detention centers for 15 million people. The whole concept is stupid on its face and completely impossible to do, but here you are, cheerleading while talking about how the Republicans are "fiscally conservative".

140 cops were violently assaulted by an armed mob on January 6th. I guess they weren't "innocent" enough for that to count as "harm". I guess that experience, which led to many of them to suffer from PTSD, doesn't count as "horror".

A gallows was erected outside the Capitol, with rioters chanting to "Hang Mike Pence" They stormed the capitol and assaulted police officers over 2000 of them to stop the election being ratified. They only didn't break in to the barricaded House floor because Federal officers shot one of them.

People died that day.

It's not a matter of belief, we saw it with our own eyes as did you.

Why are you trying to tell us it didn't happen like we all saw?
 
so i've recently discovered that the "jan 6 was no big deal and what about blm" take hasn't gotten better with age. and as we all know, antifa and blm burned portland down all summer killing tons of innocent people, so a bunch of nazi militias should be able to burn the capital and kill nancy pelosi to make it even. this is the left leaning classical liberal centrist take, of course. can't see why anybody is making fun of that.

Other than a violent mob attempting to stop the certification of a lawful election.
Other than breaking into our Capitol, looting and ransacking it, causing over $1.5 MILLION in damage.
Other than attacking police officers with flag poles, pepper spray, fire extinguishers, etc. resulting in actual real harm, some requiring surgeries and lasting trauma. Four officers committed suicide within seven months.
Other than a rioter being shot and killed.

Aaaaand once again you've been fooled by the internet. The article you posted is a ridiculous take on what actually happened.

Rahma's schtick is to put his subjects on the defensive by discussing something that makes them feel uncomfortable. Harris agreed to do the interview if she could turn the tables and come back with something that made him uncomfortable. But when she did so, raising a silly issue that was agreed upon before the interview, Rahma became uncomfortable with some of the things he had said and decided not to publish so he wouldn't be criticized by fellow muslims.

In fact, its Rahma who looks like a complete fool for not publishing the interview, not Harris.

But as usual you found something that appeared to support your worldview, accepted it uncritically and decided to post it on a skeptics forum of all places.

All that, and...when a sitting President who has fairly lost an election calls for his disgruntled supporters to show up on that day in the Capital (""Be there, will be wild!") to "stop the steal!" which some of his own advisors had told him hadn't happened, and then makes a speech about fighting for their rights without considering how that might be taken by an already-incited mob of his making- yeah, I'd say that counts as a very real and long-lasting harm to the whole country and its institutions. The Portland (and other) protesters were at least honestly protesting what they saw as a very real grievance; Trump had to have known better and was only pursuing his own personal and imaginary grievance which he foisted on his gullible supporters (a lot of whom incurred a cost that he avoided entirely).

Can you really not see the difference between ordinary citizens rioting due to (arguably legitimate) grievances, and a sitting President whipping up a mob of his most crackpot supporters and sending them to invade the seat of your democracy in an attempt to prevent the peaceful transition of power to his fairly elected successor? Even if they'd been stopped before the violence, horror would still have been the appropriate response. The fact that the man responsible for this outrageous attack on democracy may be about to be democratically reelected is making me feel physically sick.

Trump contested the result and wanted it rectified...which he would never be able to do without the courts. It was too late. He made a speech. He was mad that no one wanted to litigate his case.

He did not tell ANYONE to go and break into the Capitol. He told them to protest peacefully. Those were his actual words.
Did you physically hear Trump say different words than the ones he is on video saying? And then tweeting for it to be peaceful...and then tweeting for them to leave the area?

What was Pelosi doing as the top person in charge of capitol security?
