I remember Bush making lots of gaffes, too. No one accused him of being demented.
If anyone wants a trip down memory lane, here's some memorable ones. I especially love the one where he boasts that 'we' never stop thinking of new ways to harm our country and its people.

Oh, and who can forget when he in 2022, following russia's invasion of Ukraine, condemned the invasion of... Iraq.

But I already see news sites making the putin/Zelensky name gaffe their top story, because of course they are. I get it's summertime and Komkommertijd, but come on, you have a responsibility to your viewers. It's as if they want Dump to win.

Now that's just plain silly. The media (with obvious exceptions) are largely pulling for Trump to lose, and right now they are showing it by trying to get rid of Biden, whom they see as likely to drag the Democrats down with him. Note that the Republicans have been remarkably quiet about Biden and his debate performance.

Bush made a fair amount of verbal gaffes, although I do note that the condemnation of the invasion of Iraq one came about 13 years after he left office. Back in the day, Biden also made some floaters, but nobody back then thought he was suffering from dementia (nor did they think Bush was). Both of them just had foot in mouth disease.

You should contact CNN and ask for a job as a political pundit. Like their pundits, you could get paid a lot for spouting nonsense. And by the way, this is "USA Politics", not "Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theories," that's one forum up.

Could people try and get some perspective on this.

This is the not “the media” destroying Biden’s campaign.

This is Biden destroying his campaign.

He and the Democrats messed up that debate.

The point of that debate was to attack Trump.

Biden failed by looking senile.

Nobody’s fault, his, as he later tried to say.

He has put himself in this mess.

If he wanted the focus to be on Trump’s lies and on Project 2025, then come to the debate without your “resting 25th amendment face” as Jon Stewart called it.

Indeed, it's entirely self-inflicted.
Biden could have stepped back after one Term, and his legacy would have been assured.

The media is often slow to build a story, in this case, Biden's performance in the debate.

So Biden looking strong and presidential in the press conference doesn't jibe with the stories they're hot to push.

Even AP who I find the least biased are still not letting us forget about the debate yet, and perhaps rightly so.

Huh?!

I think people are too in thrall to the idea that there is a central organization called The Media who spend their time doing nothing but inventing narratives out of whole cloth.

Essentially it is a kind of conspiracy theory. And it is believed now by both Trumpists and Bidenists who seem to believe there is a Luggenpresse deceiving the population and killing the chances of the rightful leaders.

BUT this is belied by the fact that the Media is not one thing. There is right-wing, left-wing and alternative media. There are factions within that and there is also the fact that people can actually make up their own minds on things too.

The press conference that Biden did was being scrutinized so much because Biden had been such a gibbering wreck at the debate. This was not part one of a slowly building media narrative. It is just what happened. Then remember that he tried to clean up the mess with an interview one week later that despite being short and with a relatively gentle interviewer was also a complete mess.

Then in this supposedly amazing press conference, which should frankly be something Biden could do in his sleep, he called the president of the country being invaded by Russia, President Putin and called his own vice president Trump! Aside from that he was not really that great, but the bar is so low now that people are acting as if he just performed the Gettysburg address.

He didn’t. He was still not really that good, and worse yet he has a debate in September that I hold out no hope for, an interview on Monday and some event in Chicago in August.

He’s still looking very shaky to me and that is the fault of Biden and the people around him, not the press whose job it is is to scrutinize powerful people and call them out, not to pamper them or write propaganda for them. That latter job is the job of Morning Joe, which is Fox and Friends for liberals. They think their man is someone who should be deferred to as if he is a king and that it is rude to point out that he has no divine right to rule.

The whole idea that the media should somehow have pretended that BIden did well in the debate is just plain ridiculous.

But I would say that the constant undermining of Biden by certain
Progressives because he was not being as far to the left was they would like has something to do with the debacle facing us.

This is you trotting out your own narrative. In fact, the progressives are not calling for Biden to quit. From what I can see the calls for Biden to quit are not coming from AOC or Sanders. They are saying the opposite. The calls are from people like George Clooney and relatively moderate congresspeople. People who seem to be giving him a gentle nudge to leave are Pelosi and Tim Cain. These aren’t progressives.

Someone shouted out a question about his verbal gaffes. "Listen to Trump" was Biden's perfect riposte.

Meh….

It’s actually pretty weak, but as I said, expectations are low so people get surprised when he manages even a mildly coherent riposte. But really that jibe could be made about anything.

Cool. Although you didn't go through the trouble of telling us what you think is the conspiracy theory.

Is it that the media doesn't want Trump to win? Is that what you call a conspiracy theory?

There are certainly a number of media outlets where the editorial and many of its writers support Biden, or at least the Democrats. CNN and NYT are two of those, but in the UK the same would be true of the Guardian and the Economist. In some cases they are upfront about it. So that is hardly a conspiracy theory - the existence of editorial preferences is an established tradition.

Now, people shouldn’t mistake pointing out Biden’s flaws as a desire to want Trump to win or to kill American democracy. That’s ridiculous. In fact, if you look at how the Republicans and Trump are acting, their behavior is consistent with wanting Biden to stay in the race because they find him to be eminently beatable. That suggests that wanting Biden to be replaced for a better candidate is itself pro-Democratic Party.

Here in Sacramento, the Governor just basically dodged a bunch of reporters asking him about the Biden situation. Newsom is keeping a very low profile on this.

Get a lucrative career as a nutdip.

I have reason to think that this could be taken in a negative way not intended.
Apologies.

It was a play on words re. pundits being nutdips or dipnuts. Nauseating, no matter how the letters are arranged.

Given the wonderful Neo-liberal, great boss paradise The Party of Trump is promising, If Biden is all we have, I'd vote for him even if he were Christopher Pike in a 23rd Century iron lung wheel chair holding his guts in place.

I'm suffering sever deja vu right now - I was sure we'd done the whole Trump/Hitler thing a while back.

Must be mistaken.

I'm having deja vu, too: you ignoring the content of my post about the warning by "one of America’s most eminent and well-respected historians of the Holocaust" in order to get in a snarky jibe. Not mistaken.
