OK, I'm starting to think his media advisors DO include Steer Karmer (thanks Lothian for the idea)

Check out this video by Sunak, and try to avoid thinking about the Fast Show or Int Milk Brilliant

OMG! Wasn't that once a common comedy meme, having some chummy presenter walking along spouting nonsense. What's with all the ridiculous arm pumping and hand-waving. I suppose they've been coached into thinking it gives their verbal diarrhoea fake energy, passion and conviction in what they are saying to the audience they deign to patronise. What next, doing a Verve type thing, walking down Brick Lane and shouldering everyone out of the way. 'The plans don't work, they just make it worse...'

In Scotland we keep being told how wonderful all things Scandi are, but this does not seem to include national service. Many other countries seem to manage.

If having conscripts reduces the risk of getting into wars that seems a good thing?

Combat infantry training currently takes 6 months, if followed up by reserve duties that would give an ability to rapidly expand units in the event of an emergency.

I think that the health and care services could accept conscripts also.

Interestingly dentists are being effectively threatened with conscription. They will have to do four years in the NHS or have to pay the full costs of their training.

I could also see an option for doing national service post degree e.g. in schools, policing support, those with sociology and criminology degrees could do national service working in prisons! Lawyers could do service in crown prosecution or public defenders offices.

The reward might be remission of university debt.

The problem is making sure that these posts are additions and do not displace
'regulars'.

Sweden only has a population of 10m, Denmark, 6m, Estonia 2.5m, Finland 5.6m. The latter has a land border with Russia of 830 miles. It is 1.4 times larger than the entire UK, which has 67m people. Sweden only introduced conscription recently. Finland seems to have always had it for obvs reasons, plus people are very patriotic and do it willingly mostly. But I agree, with such a large population, the UK can easily ramp up its recruitment drive and carry on with people who actually want a military career.

Showing my age, but I've been thinking of Led Zeppelin's Going To California for several days now. Alternating with Radiohead's Electioneering.

For me it's with apologies to Frank Zappa, 'Hi, and hishy-dishy, I'm a Tory guy, you can call me Rishi, any you boys not paid up on your cards? You know I'm pleased to meet you, been tryin' all day to reach you, the Party's here to help everyone of you.'

I guess now they're not even pretending that they're not slavishly mimicking Trump and the GOP.

What's next ? Claiming that Keir is too old or references to the "Starmer crime family" ?

I expect "toolmaker" will turn out to be underworld slang for something or other.

Yup, the Fast Show, ”Brilliant, and Paul Whitehouse.

See the "int milk brilliant" advert I mentioned where he did the same thing

Rishi is considering requiring future applicants for public sector jobs to have completed National Service.

It’s one of the enforcement options that is being considered if he gets to enact the policy.

If he's ever in a position to enact the policy, we'll have bigger things to worry about.

I've already seen the obvious Starship Troopers memes, 'service means citizenship'.

The r/labour feed has gone even more into overdrive about not voting for 'keith'. Its like they don't understand what the choice is. Morons.

He's going for the Thatcher gung-ho! by jingo! Falklands War crap, which won her a huge landslide.

Problem is, the public has such a short memory. People are actually liking the completely potty, bananas, bonkers suggestions. Some twit I saw said she admired Rishi standing in the pouring rain.

UK, what is wrong with you?

I know.

Claiming there's no difference between Labour and the Tories, when one is advocating forced labour for young adults and the other, lowering the voting age to 16 as sixteen year olds can pay taxes.

Idiots

But Starmer is insufficiently ideologically pure and as such is even worse than a Tory.

I suppose if you never get into power then you don't see how crazy and ineffective your policies turn out to be.

I suppose he's honing in on gammons' natural enemies, brown people, poor people, sick people and young people.

Gammons are miserable and so they want everyone else to be at least as miserable as they are.

Mrs Don brought up some more good questions regarding the Tories' forced labour programme.

Who is responsible for finding and allocating roles ?

What if the 18 year old moves, for example to go to university, how do they get a new role ?

What if I am incompatible with the assigned role ?

How do I get to and from my assigned role - especially in areas where roles are a long way away and public transport is poor ?

How about meals while I'm volunteering who is going to pay for those.

What if I'm sick ?

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Minister for the Indo-Pacific, said on the radio today that parents would be fined if their 'children' didn't do their service.

She does know that she's talking about 18 year olds?

Aaah well, this is the person who used to claim that when she was governor of a certain local high school with responsibility for special needs education the school increased its special needs provision by replacing a retiring, incredibly good and experienced SENCo with a less experienced person (still decent) whose job was expanded to include attendance issues and a couple of other things, while also cutting the pastoral care bod's hours from full time to half time (full disclosure: a colleague and I had spent several years getting this bod from being a bit of a panicker to being more than competent).

Well done, Tory Girl! Jolly well done!

Yup and those probably took very little thought to come up with. My list was similar

I'm fairly certain that if I put in an effort, I could find the letter I recieved from my local conscription board, stating that upon reciept of the questionaire I had filled out, and a review of medical records, I was excempt from appearing before the conscription board. A shame really, as I would have volunteered for the navy, but oh well...

So I guess in my case, it would be a choice of "or community service".
