The Jan 6 Investigation (2)

Riiiiiiight. Because storming the Capitol and making the Congress members hide in fear for their lives wasn't "obstructing" proceedings.
We can hope, though, that Segnosaur is right: they weren't "obstructing," but doing something worse, and though it's likely a vain hope, I'd love to see them realize too late that they should have left well enough alone.

It's the Judge Brain at work, where they think that it's Congress"s job to get in the mud with voters as to keep the splash away from their shiny robes.
It's basically "yeah , it wasn't nice, but did you see what Congress, especially Democrats, were wearing? They kinda asked for it."

From the referenced article:

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority indicated Tuesday that it may toss out a charge prosecutors have lodged against hundreds of people who took part in the January 6, 2021, riot on the US Capitol, a decision that could force the Justice Department to reopen some of those cases.... The court’s decision, expected by July, could have significant ramifications for some 350 people who were charged with “obstructing” an official proceeding for their part in the Capitol attack...

My hopes is that if the government has to 'reopen' any of the cases, they will take some of the individuals who received what was perceived to be "light" sentences for "obstruction of an official proceeding" and push for much more significant penalties.

Have a troop of FBI agents waiting outside the court to do the six Roland Freiselers for joint enterprise in the January 6th coup.

And as it would constitute a treason, simply ship them off to Guantanamo.

Wasn't sure where this should go, but it seems like as good of a place as any...

From: CNBC
A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the criminal contempt of Congress conviction of former Trump White House senior aide Steve Bannon for refusing to testify and provide documents to the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The appeals court rejected Bannon’s argument that he was not guilty because his attorney had advised him not to comply with a subpoena from the House committee.

Bannon does have a few avenues to appeal, but those are seen as longshots. So, there is a good chance that he will soon have to serve jail time.

I hope he hires the most expensive attorney he can find and chases down every single avenue that he possibly can for appeal all the way to the Supreme Court.

Mostly because I'd like to see him blow through his money and end up in prison at the end of it. That's having cake and eating it too!

Does Bannon actually have "billionaire sugar daddies"?

I know he had Stubby McBonespurs as a supporter (after all, Bannon received a pardon following after his fraud conviction.) But I can't see too many billionaires looking at him and thinking "this is the type of guy we want hanging around".

The way I see it, he has limited upside (no real usefulness at getting republicans elected), and plenty of downside, either as an embarassment "Look at the criminals involved with the republican party/he looks like an unmade bed" sort of thing, or as someone who can influence Trump in ways that they don't like. (I am pretty sure the billionaires want to influence Trump themselves, rather than have things filtered through Bannon.)

He has the Mercers and Guo Wengui - that's just the official ones.

Do the Mercers still support Bannon though? I know at one point they were close, but I've seen evidence to suggest they have distanced themselves from him.

From: CBC (a.k.a. the mother corps)
...after (Trump) learned that a gossipy White House tell-all included quotes that his son was “treasonous”...Trump's mysterious billionaire backers Robert and Rebekah Mercer did a very rare thing and publicly fired back. Rebekah Mercer issued a statement about Trump’s former strategist and Mercer family friend Steve Bannon — the source of the offending comments — that sawed him off like a gangrenous limb. “My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months, and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements,” it said....It seems that a year after Trump's election, their association with Bannon had become an embarrassment for them....

Guo might still be on friendly terms with Bannon, but given the fact that Guo is facing some pretty significant criminal charges and started chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in 2022, his ability to help Bannon is rather limited.

I'm responding to this post from a different thread...
Sure... one 'side' wandered through the Capitol and did no material property damage and caused no actual harm. But you're not wrong.

The other 'side' held dozens of 'mostly peaceful' marches involving tens of thousands of people for Not My President. And that same other 'side' tried to occupy parts of Seattle, and proceeded to set several buildings on fire (sometimes with people inside of them), loot, and vandalize private small businesses.

You're very selective in what sort of destructive and uncivil behavior you call out as being an existential threat and what sort you seem willing to accept as no big deal. Or at least brush aside and pretend like it doesn't count.

From where I'm standing, it's different targets and different slogans... but it's pretty much the same type of behavior, and the same risk to the populace.
I'm not addressing the incredibly delusional "caused no actual harm". It was already addressed.

Trump and his followers use BLM (and other protests) as an excuse for Jan 6. This is inane for several reasons. It's a socio-political category error. It's a non sequitur. It's whataboutism in the surreal extreme. It ignores the profound difference between public protests, and the actions of a President attempting to overthrow democracy.

Utterly pathetic.

one one side, the donald trump administration, responsible for the actions of donald trump and his administration. the other, his critics, all responsible for any of the actions of any of his critics or political opponents.

now that that's settled, dei is the greatest threat modern civilization has ever faced, mexicans are going to rape us all to death, and all the trans need to be eradicated off the face of the earth.

Nonsense, it's perfectly logical. Just like a block party is a party, the Communist party is party, and the Donner party was a party, so why is it all my fault just because I killed the old lady next door and served her up in a vat of chili to half the neighborhood? Everyone got fed, didn't they? It was a party!

It's hard to explain something to someone when their salary cult adherence depends on them not understanding it.

Maybe both the BLM rioters and the Jan 6th rioters were in the wrong?

The argument isn't so much if they're wrong or not. It's that if equating the two is fair in the context of the Jan 6th riot and how it relates to politics. You're missing the point. The point is the BLM riots weren't political in nature, they were social. The Jan 6th riot was political in nature and egged on by the leader of that political party.

jan 6 was organized and directed by trump to his personal benefit. it’s a ridiculous comparison
