The Jan 6 Investigation (2)

Trump missed a deadline to appeal the order he could be sued by people injured in the Jan 6 riots.

Trump misses Supreme Court deadline to fight civil immunity from Jan. 6 lawsuits

Quote:
After missing a deadline to file at the U.S. Supreme Court, Donald Trump has formally left himself exposed to civil liability lawsuits from people who wish to hold him personally accountable for his role in the violent breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Please, don't ever put "Donald Trump" and "exposed" in the same sentence ever again!

Trump's immunity appeal will be heard by SCOTUS. DC trial delayed pending ruling.

Note the court will not consider immunity writ large.

The application for a stay presented to The Chief Justice is referred by him to the Court. The Special Counsel’s request to treat the stay application as a petition for a writ of certiorari is granted, and that petition is granted limited to the following question: Whether and if so to what extent does a former President enjoy presidential immunity from criminal prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts during his tenure in office.

Even if the SC rules against Trump and the trial goes ahead, it will delay it for months likely preventing a conviction/acquittal before the election. If Trump is elected (shudder) and the trial doesn't conclude before Trump is sworn in, he'll order his loyalist AG to drop the charges. If convicted and he still wins the election, he will be pardon himself and every single person already convicted of Jan 6 crimes on day one. Then he'll go on his journey of revenge.

I didn't hear a lot of commentators predict SCOTUS would go that route. But SCOTUS has well and truly ****** us, unless they're coy and they have some ace up their sleeve that they're waiting to play.

In other words, we are well and truly ******.

A couple of them may well have a personal stake/goals in delaying things beyond the immediate partisan hackery. Thomas and Alito in particular. Thomas' wife being involved in treason is of note, but there's also the aspect where Thomas and Alito likely would prefer to retire during a Republican administration.

The whole premise of Trump's effort there is ridiculous and insane, of course, so this move by the SC is just yet another piece of evidence when it comes to how badly the Republican Party is subverting Justice in favor of crime and corruption. Last time I checked, it was the so-called "conservatives" behind pretty much every pro-corruption decision that I've checked, and this current group of so called "conservatives" has very much been continuing that.

Why prefer retiring under a Repub admin?

That sucks. It's absurd to equate storming the Capitol to stop certification of the votes with hypothetically blocking traffic that stopped legislators from getting to work.

Those SCOTUS justices are as biased as hell.

Bet they'd sing a different tune if the mob had stormed the Supreme Court.

*Dryly* On noes how could we have foreseen that the 4 people put on the Court by Trump with them open and stated reason of covering his ass would cover his ass in the exact scenario they are there to cover his ass in.

If the last 10 years of American politics was a movie we would have walked out of it a long time ago but the Chekov's Guns are so obviously set up. It's like watching a Super Hero Movie where the sidekicks name is "Imminent Necrophilia Lad" and we've reached the scene where the Super Hero walks in on him having sex with a corpse and it's being treated like a twist.

Takeaways from the Supreme Court’s arguments over obstruction charge used against January 6 rioters.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/16/politics/takeaways-supreme-court-january-6-rioters
From the referenced article:

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority indicated Tuesday that it may toss out a charge prosecutors have lodged against hundreds of people who took part in the January 6, 2021, riot on the US Capitol, a decision that could force the Justice Department to reopen some of those cases.... The court’s decision, expected by July, could have significant ramifications for some 350 people who were charged with “obstructing” an official proceeding for their part in the Capitol attack...

My hopes is that if the government has to 'reopen' any of the cases, they will take some of the individuals who received what was perceived to be "light" sentences for "obstruction of an official proceeding" and push for much more significant penalties.

Riiiiiiight. Because storming the Capitol and making the Congress members hide in fear for their lives wasn't "obstructing" proceedings.
