Merged Protests disrupt college campuses / Campus Protests

"From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free", is not a call for the 2 state solution.

Seriously bro?

There's video of protesters/students being asked what that meant. They didn't know. But Intifada is fun and stylish! (We're back to Tom Wolfe's Radical Chic.)

Everyone is conservative about what he knows best.

Not necessarily. There was a Conservative MP in the UK who decided to defect to the Labour Party after his disabled child was born. The reason is that the Labour Party invested more money in help for the disabled and their families.

Indeed. I think that is likely to be true of many of the protesters. They don’t really know what they are talking about and that puts the lie to the idea that they are a horde of anti-semites. Most of them are likely to be moved by the images of bombings of the buildings in Gaza.

That's not what was in the picture

Here you go. Big one in the front, tiny one in the back.

ETA: Sort of love the idea of people holding protest signs for a two-state solution; going to ask Bing to give it a go.

ETA2: So close!

A few years back Mexico had a student movement of women protesting violence and mistreatment of them. After an incident on one particular campus.
That seemed noble and the school made some rather drastic changes to try to fix it.

The garb of choice was black hoodies, backpacks and by the time it spread to multiple campus' within Mexico city. They started taking buildings and demanding outsiders bring them food and whatnot ladies required on a weeks long occupation. The gov did near nothing to remove them.

As it morphed they would mob up and take a walk through the city breaking bank and store windows and ruining monuments but by then an anarchy group had taken over and they used public wifi to organize. The city learned fast, boarding up an barricades on the routes, turning off the wifi to disrupt the plans and using a few thousand female police to guide them on a safer route to where they all disappear into crowds and ran off before being arrested.
Every building they got removed from was utterly trashed, near the end less than 1/4 of those arrested for vandalism were actually college students. It was about a six month run before it all faded away.

It was mostly the usual suspects in other past violent or destructive protests for other causes. The women would vaporize in a change of clothes when it looked like trouble leaving men to take the heat for the damages.

The video cameras all over the city really did help the authorities get the worst offenders later on.

The gov took heat for not making the campus a safe place for the ladies, another for not being decisive in retaking the buildings back quickly, another for allowing the destruction of the city and then for being too aggressive in stopping the vandalism.

Make up their minds! Are they supposed to permit it to go forever, or to stop it from being destructive as soon as possible.

My wife believes in protest as a valid tool. But she can't really explain how camping out blocking stuff up fixed any issues.
My own view is that my issues shouldn't be blocking your morning commute or breaking bank windows.
I will find a way to affect changes that fix the problems with no disruptive behavior.

A Thank-You Note to the Campus Protesters, an op-ed at NYT:
For every student who became ardently pro-Palestinian during the protests, another one, perhaps a Jewish student with previously indifferent feelings about Israel, finally saw the connection between antisemitism and anti-Zionism. For every professor who’s shown up to your encampment to lend support, you’ve lost a fair-minded liberal with your Maoist-style sloganeering and your arrogant disdain for the genuine fears of some of your Jewish peers.

And for every commencement ceremony whose cancellation you’ve effectively forced, or which you intend to spoil, thousands of apolitical students — who didn’t get to have a proper high school graduation thanks to Covid — have taken an intense and permanent distaste to you and everything you stand for.

It's far more likely that the student protesters are, for the most part (though with obvious exceptions), not protesting in favour of authoritarianism, but simply protesting because they have seen horrific images of bombing on their screens.

One wonders why they weren't motivated to protest by the rape, murder, burning alive, and beheading of innocent civilians, and intent to commit actual genocide that started this war.

Why don't you look up Brettbug's past commentary. Maybe he's the guy you don't want to reference. He screams "leftwing antisemtism" if his coffee order takes too long.

Here we see the circumstantial ad hominem (commonly known as Bulverism) in its pure and unsullied natural state. Bret only says these things—which we can safely assume to be wrong—because he's such a reflexive anti-antisemite.

Because that wasn't done with our support and money?

Everyone attacking the students keeps blowing by that fact. You all ignore it (except one person at least acknowledged it was a legitimate point) because you have no answer for it. We can't hold ourselves accountable. We have no intraspeciton. You're trying to hold these student to a far greater standard than you will hold people you agree with, including yoruselves.

You posted an opinion piece by someone who is known to cry wolf. He's a right-wing hack who runs cover for actual white supremacists. He has no credicility in this discussion.

And, by the way, Brettbug's piece was jsut a long ad hom.

Seems to me he was arguing that the current crop of tactics will likely backfire, but perhaps I'll take ad hom advice from someone who blithely compares people to insects.

Again, look into his history. It references a very specific incident when he tried to get a college professor "canceled".
