Plus, Hamas are also the governing body for Gaza and at least were officially recognised as that by Israel.

One man's terrorist organisation is another man's health, education, policing and social infrastructure supplier.

Maybe it's a prelude for the Tories declaring that providing health, education, policing and social infrastructure (unless for profit of course) is extremism?

The new law bans government interaction with those who
promote or advance of an ideology based on intolerance that aims to negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy.

As an example of the above I have found an example of threatening parliamentary democracy by attacking the election of a MP

"And it is beyond alarming that last night the Rochdale by election returned a candidate… …who dismisses the horror of what happened on October 7th, who glorifies Hezbollah… …and is endorsed by Nick Griffin, the racist former leader of the BNP."

I trust the Government will stop any contact with the intolerant individual who made these remarks.

As ever when the Tories are wittering about extremism, "fighting words" and threats to MPs they do not mean that to apply to themselves.

As someone mentioned to me today, given what Abbot is suspended for would the Tories be happy with a union leader saying ".... that looking at the Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis makes you “want to hate all Jewish men” and said the Rabbi “should be shot”, the Guardian can reveal.

Frank Hester, who has given £10m to the Tories in the past year, said in the meeting that he did not hate all Jewish men. But he said that seeing Mirvis, who is Britain’s chief Rabbi, on TV meant “you just want to hate all Jewish men because he’s there
”.

Depends on the union. If it's from one of their own, then it's a-ok.

Nothing will come of this directly but it keeps the topic current:

Apparently aTory Minister said to Sam Coates of Sky News that he’s “worried about peace in the Middle East” because it might “help Labour”.
He hasn't named which one said it.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of government funded advertising at the moment, things like hospital choice, online driving license renewal, not hogging the middle lane on the motorway, etc? I know there's been quite a lot for a while, like that annoying 'Go Left' campaign, but it seems cranked up to eleven, literally every commercial break I hear on LBC has one, many of them have two. I don't want to go CT or anything but I would be very interested to know if the advertising agencies placing these ads (and pocketing our cash for doing so) donate to the Tory Party. I'm wondering if this is a last ditch effort to channel.some of our cash into the Tory War Chest before calling an election via this historically very Tory industry.

Penny Mordaunt could replace Rishi in a 'crowning ceremony ' to avoid a divisive leadership contest.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

In any other country this would have people on the streets en masse to demand an election, here we seem content to let the Tories fatten the pensions of one MP after another by shoving them in No.10. The Tories are incapable of understanding that the only way to change their fortunes would be to pursue policies that are in the interests of the country rather than their donors.

In 2020, 30p Lee voted for the Recall of MPs (Change of Party Affiliation) Bill - which requires an MP to call a by-election if they defect.

This one has always fascinated me.

The following is about Australia:

In theory, and all the rules and regulations that govern elections, people don't vote for parties, they vote for the person.

But in reality, people vote for a party as represented by the person who is standing for that party, and feel betrayed if the person they voted for switches parties.

I imagine that there is a corollory in which people feel elated if an elected member switches to 'their side' but I haven't personally encountered that.

There is almost no mention of political parties in the Australian constitution, except for section 15, which was amended in 1977, after a referendum, to acknowledge the party of an elected member when a Senator needs to be replaced between elections.

Section 15:

Where a vacancy has at any time occurred in the place of a senator chosen by the people of a State and, at the time when he was so chosen, he was publicly recognized by a particular political party as being an endorsed candidate of that party and publicly represented himself to be such a candidate, a person chosen or appointed under this section in consequence of that vacancy, or in consequence of that vacancy and a
subsequent vacancy or vacancies, shall, unless there is no member of that party available to be chosen or appointed, be a member of that party.

Historically we have had many occasions where a person has stood for a party, and then 'changed their mind' or perhaps 'revealed their intentions' after being elected.

I can understand why someone would try to legislate against that behaviour.

The Tories have been running a ‘Go Left’ campaign? I mean literally, rather than the obvious figuratively.

Funniest news story of the day is brought to you from the DAILY EXPRESS:

Supporters of Grant Shapps are calling Tory MPs testing support for him to replace Rishi Sunak as Tory leader and Prime Minister as "the unity candidate".

It comes as Tory MPs have told Express.co.uk that Mr Sunak "is on the cusp" of being ousted as leader and "will be out in two weks" [sic] with polls in freefall and the party staring at the worst defeat in its history in a general election later this year.

Grant Shapps as PM. What could possibly go wrong...?
