Cont: Today's Mass Shooting (part 3)

The Chinese were made to live in their own neighborhoods. We now call Chinatowns. And, boy, those Chinese have never been able to recover.
Your ignorance is no longer astounding. It's actually expected.
The Golden Dragon massacre was a gang-related mass shooting that took place on September 4, 1977, inside the Golden Dragon Restaurant at 822 Washington Street in Chinatown, San Francisco, California, United States. The five perpetrators, members of the Joe Boys, a Chinese youth gang, were attempting to kill leaders of the Wah Ching, a rival Chinatown gang. The attack left five people dead and 11 others injured, none of whom were gang members. Seven perpetrators were later convicted and sentenced in connection with the murders. The massacre led to the establishment of the San Francisco Police Department's Asian Gang Task Force, credited with ending gang-related violence in Chinatown by 1983.

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. What does that have to do with anything? Chinese-Americans, along with others of East Asian ancestory, are hardly a blip in crime stats. Indeed, some crime stats sets don't even bother to mention them as they commit too little crime to matter.
Oh I don't know. Maybe if you read the whole Wiki entry you would notice that the Chinese community in the USA has been just as rife with gun-totin' crime gangs as most other communities in the USA. Always has been. Why, even the Hasidic Jews of NYC have gangs! So why are you so wound up that the black communities are simply following suit, not being an exception? Gun crime and death has always been the American way, right from the start of independence!

My goodness. The progressive belief that Black people are infantile children who lack agency knows no end. This is so stupid.

The belief expressed is that black people have, through institutionalised racism, been subjected to repressive policies regarding, housing, jobs and education, that disadvantage them, forcing many to live in high crime, no hope areas.

When white people experience the same issues and find themselves living in areas with poor housing, job opportunities, education and high instances of substance misuse and gangs, they have the same problems.

Why would living in a certain neighborhood cause a person to behave badly? Do people just have no control of their own actions? Did the prior inhabitants take all the magic dirt away leaving tragic dirt?

You would struggle if you had to grow up in a neighbourhood where you lived in a home with more people than it was designed for, which included adults who were drug or alcohol abusers, where there was no opportunity to get a well paid job, where the local school was poor and where you had to join a gang, which requires you to distrust all authority and disrespect the kids from the neighbouring street.

Millions of children are born into those circumstances and not surprisingly, cannot break free of that circle of violence, abuse, overcrowding, no jobs and poor education.

People create their own environment. Whether a neighborhood is safe and prosperous or unsafe and economically stagnant is dependent on the people who live their. Unhappy with your neighborhood? Why not try to improve instead of blaming invisible power structures.

You have no idea of the obstacles in the way of people who do try to improve their neighbourhood. It is not easy to try to get the local school to employ better teachers and find better facilities. Or landlords to properly maintain their properties. Or new businesses to start up providing employment. Or the local gang to stop dealing. Or the police to stop treating everyone as the enemy and engage more in community policing. Or the local authority to improve facilities and build that new sports centre and maintain street lighting etc.

When those power structures give up on an area, or there is institutionalised racism within those structures, the people living in those places suffer.

The final tally for January mass shootings are in at gva.org.

36 total.
62 killed.
108 wounded.

A few of the notables, and by notables I mean shootings with double digit casualty counts and more killed than wounded. Also, one shooting that leftist/media want to pretend doesn't happen.

Also of note, not one single white supremacist mass shooting.

Nothing stops parents from reading to their children. Nothing. Schools are just public daycare. Blaming schools for a child's illiteracy is dumb.

Or landlords to properly maintain their properties. Or new businesses to start up providing employment.

If the local polity is permissive of crime, few businesses will want to open there.

Or the local gang to stop dealing.

FFS. Arrest and prosecute them.

Or the police to stop treating everyone as the enemy and engage more in community policing.

One of the left's favorite conspiracy theories.

Or the local authority to improve facilities and build that new sports centre and maintain street lighting etc.

Who elects these folks?

When those power structures give up on an area, or there is institutionalised racism within those structures, the people living in those places suffer.

The race of these "power structures" is invaribly the same as the constituents. E.g, Detroit, Baltimore, etc.

Parents are notoriously bad at pedagogy. Standardised curriculums exist for a reason. Teacher training and accreditation exists for a reason.

You have got to be kidding. Every parent can teach their child the alphabet. Every parent can teach their child sight words. Every parent can help their child to read. There is no substitute for putting in the time. If you have time for Netflix, you have time for your child. Pedagogy and teacher accredition are meaningless if the parent is not invested in their child. My children could read before they started school and now read well above grade level. No one will care more about your child than you.

Or landlords to properly maintain their properties.

Just sniping here, but it's quite possible to fix your own plumbing nowadays, assuming that it's specific to the apartment, if the landlord refuses to. The internet makes it particularly easy to figure out how to do it, and even do it right (not that hard... standard plumbing fixes don't require a lot of education).

I've actually fixed quite a lot of problems myself in apartments I've lived in, without even mentioning them to the landlord (plumbing, electric, missing/decaying storm windows that let in a wicked draft [not a proper fix in the last case, but enough to stop the draft], etc.).

But yeah... gonna take a step back from relating that to race. Has nothing to do with skin color. The standard meme is that poor people are helpless to fix such things without landlord assistance... but they're not. Is it their responsibility? Not really, but sometimes it's just easier, and fairly cheap as well if you're doing it yourself. Relying on the landlord tends to take a bit longer and who knows if they'll ever get to it. And don't get me wrong. I'm also aware that doing unlicensed plumbing can get you into legal trouble in some jurisdictions (usually not for simple fixes that you didn't charge anybody for, though).

And yes, there are indeed some problems that you literally can't fix yourself this way. I'm aware of that. And even I wouldn't buy my landlord a new water heater, for instance. A flapper valve for the toilet or a new faucet for the kitchen sink? Not even worth mentioning to the landlord. It'd be even sillier to rely on the "professionals" to clean out a simple p-trap that is clogged (ridiculously easy and costs nothing -- unless you ask a plumber to do it or are stupid enough to actually buy drain cleaner instead of just taking it apart... the clog isn't always in the trap, but it usually is).

And no. I'm not a plumber or even a "handyman." I've done just enough of it myself to know that most things don't actually require a professional, and I acquired most of that knowledge while renting and supposedly able to rely on a landlord to do them. To be perfectly blunt, the appeal of just doing it myself was partially about learning how to. To me, that's more valuable than what little I spent on whatever the repair was (usually next to nothing, at worst 50 bucks or so). Self reliance is a good thing, and doesn't necessarily cost much (usually makes things cheaper).

That said, not everybody grew up with parents who fully remodeled three different houses while they were growing up (not that I did much of it) and literally built a fourth one (mostly) by themselves after I moved out... so... I had a bit of a head start and people to consult. Not everybody has that, but most of what I'm talking about is pathetically easy once you know how.

Oh, sweet summer child, would that it were so.

"Let them eat cake!"

Along with reverance for the blank slate, our friends on the left often reject that people are responsible for what they do. It is always easier to blame someone else than yourself. If you opt to put your child in front of a video screen instead of reading to him, that is a choice you've made about the education of your child.
