Cont: Today's Mass Shooting (part 3)

Woo hoo! Now I'm a spineless crypto-racist currying favor! Never knew my broad yumour was so powerful!

And versatile. It doesn't just goad guys like -- well, mustn't call any members out -- it also awakens awakens the steely thunder of the Knights of Harrumph. Forth they ride, jowls shaking, uttering their terrible war cry of Indeed! Indeed! All I can do is clutch my pig's bladder and slapstick and run. Damned hard to get up any speed in these ×%&☆¿* clown shoes.

I don't usually resort to PMs, but maybe, in this case --

Between 1982 and December 2023, 80 out of the 149 mass shootings in the United States were carried out by White shooters. By comparison, the perpetrator was African American in 26 mass shootings, and Latino in 12. When calculated as percentages, this amounts to 54 percent, 17 percent, and eight percent respectively.

Strange how your belief is so out of sync with reality. Where do you think your false belief came from?

In fairness mate, your cite says there were only 149 mass shootings in the USA in 40 years. We have more than double that amount in any given year.

I mean, this is a skeptics forum. We should be able to look at the data dispassionately. Black shooters are responsible for the overwhelming majority of mass shootings, meaning a mass of people shot with a gun. White boys are responsible for more mass killings with a gun, usually meaning the shooting of a mass of people with at least four in the body bags.

So what does this mean, racially? Who the hell cares. We have a psycho amount of Americans grabbing guns and killing innocent people. Maybe the racial disparity is due to whites favoring nastier weapons, giving them a higher kill rate? Possible. But I really don't give a fast furious flying fiddlers **** what color a shooter's skin is, or his victim's. I'd much rather simply not have bullet ridden American bodies lying around, either dead or wounded.

Way, way too much of the discussion here focuses on a mass shooter's race. Can we all just acknowledge the data and stop fooling around with what definition we are using that bolsters our favored spin? I mean, mother ******* are shooting each other over here daily. I really don't give a **** what color a shooter is when the bodies hit the floor.

Strange how your link is so out of sync with reality.

There were 658 mass shootings in 2023 according to gunviolencearchives.org.

I posted 22 mass shootings from 2023 with 10 or more victims.

You should ask yourself why the difference in the numbers (12 versus 658).

I'll give you a hint: it's easier to skew the numbers when you ignore 98% of mass shootings.

My belief is blacks commit the overwhelming majority of mass shootings. That's reality. If it weren't, you would present your evidence rather than spouting off.

No your belief isn't reality. My belief when backed by evidence might be but your belief never will because you start from your conclusions and ten try to fit or invent the evidence to conform to your conclusions.

"Mass shootings claim a disproportionate number of Black victims and happen more often in US cities with higher Black populations"

Why is that?

"The study is one of the first to look into the demographics of these events and link them to housing segregation, redlining and other discriminatory housing practices...The study looked at several measures of economic and social inequality in 51 metropolitan areas, and found that mass shootings correlated with places where the segregation rate was high, where there was a high percentage of Black residents, where the gap between rich and poor was very large and where there were higher rates of single-parent households. Those findings suggested to the researchers that housing policies that have historically pushed Black residents to certain neighborhoods, as well as a lack of economic opportunity, could put people at higher risk of mass shootings."

Structural and societal racism, causing a disproportionately higher level of the social breakdown that results in higher instances of violence.

Short version: "if ya live in da hood, ya gon be a thug". Yeah, I think everyone gets that.

Not my conclusion, The New York Times'.
Most of the shootings occurred in economically downtrodden neighborhoods. These shootings, by and large, are not a middle-class phenomenon.

The divide is racial as well. Among the cases examined by The Times were 39 domestic violence shootings, and they largely involved white attackers and victims. So did many of the high-profile massacres, including a wild shootout between Texas biker gangs that left nine people dead and 18 wounded.

Over all, though, nearly three-fourths of victims and suspected assailants whose race could be identified were black. Some experts suggest that helps explain why the drumbeat of dead and wounded does not inspire more outrage.

I've bolded the reality you can't seem to grasp.

That link is missing, because poverty and crime are not directly linked. It is exposure to broken homes, substance abuse, unemployment and gangs that links poverty to crime, as those causes are more prevalent in poorer areas.

Allowing crime to fester would do that. Crime is a tax on the poor.

My goodness. The progressive belief that Black people are infantile children who lack agency knows no end. This is so stupid.

How on Earth do you derive that line of reasoning from the quoted post? Did you read it at all or was this some kind of automated reply based on a few trigger words?

Sure. Your problem is that you don't go beyond that fact.

Yes, most shooters and/or victims are black. Now what? What's next? It's not enough to simply say "Look! He's black! Ecce homo niger!" What are you going to do with that fact?

What's the next step?

Mass shootings doubled over the last decade. According to the "study" that must mean redlining, structural racism, etc. doubled over the last decade.

Why would living in a certain neighborhood cause a person to behave badly? Do people just have no control of their own actions? Did the prior inhabitants take all the magic dirt away leaving tragic dirt?

Do you have an answer to this question?

Do people act completely independently, with absolutely no influence from their environment?

What?

People create their own environment. Whether a neighborhood is safe and prosperous or unsafe and economically stagnant is dependent on the people who live their. Unhappy with your neighborhood? Why not try to improve instead of blaming invisible power structures.

The Chinese were made to live in their own neighborhoods. We now call Chinatowns. And, boy, those Chinese have never been able to recover.

People also create environments for other people to inhabit. Cf. ghetto.
