Luton Airport Car Park Fire

Spare me a click onto GBeebies website with a line about what it has to say. Do they reckon the fire was set by the woke?

Apologies, I was on my tablet with little time to post more than just the link.

Electric cars 'less likely' to catch fire than petrol or diesel vehicles amid Luton Airport blaze fears

...
Experts have highlighted how electric cars are more fire-safe than other types of vehicles just days after a devastating fire.

,.,.

Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said the blaze started after a diesel-powered Range Rover burst into flames.

GB News: well known for its accurate reporting. It is not a direct quote from Andrew Hopkinson of the Beds Fire Brigade, it is GB News paraphrasing him.

And yet, on a channel that is the most likely to be spreading anti-EV propaganda, it is confirmed that the car at the origin of the blaze was a diesel.

If the fire service officer had any real doubts about the car, he would have said so. The fact that he has implied there might be a small possibility that it is not a diesel is just natural caution in case something very unlikely has been overlooked.

In one of those weird coincidences I was copied on part of a risk assessment report regarding vehicle fires. Data is UKian for 2022.
1. Two thirds of vehicle fires are criminal, that's about 65,000pa.
2. Of the approximately 35,000 non criminal/insurance fires, just 239 were electric or hybrid vehicles.
3.That's 0.69% of the vehicle fires, for a vehicle segment that comprises 2.88% of the market .
4. Hybrid/EVs are far safer than ICE vehicles.

Australian stats indicate most EV/PHEV fires are the result of arson, collision or external fires.

GB News is being investigated by Ofcom on several different fronts (not least the recent salacious misogynistic exchange between Laurence Fox and Dan Wootton - one sacked, one suspended; and thinly disguised party political broadcasts dressed up as 'chat') an in imminent danger of losing its licence as a news broadcasting corporate. If this is revoked, they would only be able to do 'on-line news', not dissimilar to RT or other rogue news outlets). So of course GB News now have to be seen as behaving themselves. But they are still winding up their viewers (albeit six of them) by insisting Beds Fire Chief Andrew Hopkinson said it was a Land Rover diesel, when he didn't actually say that. So perhaps it is too subtle for some, but GB News are still stirring things up.

Posts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) have claimed that the Luton Airport multi-storey car park fire was started by an electric or hybrid vehicle.

But this is not the case. The local fire brigade, Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, confirmed to Full Fact that the initial vehicle involved in the fire was a diesel, not a hybrid.

Andrew Hopkinson, chief fire officer at Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service, previously told the media: “We have no intelligence at this stage to suggest that this was anything other than an accidental fire that started in one of the vehicles that had not long arrived at the airport. It was not an EV. This was a diesel powered vehicle.”

How much more definitive do you want it?

All of which has nothing to do with the post you quoted nor what was being discussed.

Yes, it does, because the poster was positing, 'Why would GB News, a news channel known to be vehemently anti-woke, quote the fire chief as saying it was a diesel Land Rover?'

I explained that this quote by them was not accurate and was just a paraphrase. I also explained why GB News is being careful not to spread more disinformation, given it is under intense scrutiny by Ofcom and in real danger of losing its licence as a news broadcasting channel.

But GB News is still being mischievous in misquoting Hopkinson because its viewers are utterly wound up about the type of fire they can see in the car park CCTV.

So GB News is still hardly a reliable source, woke or non-woke.

Yet again showing you can't follow an ongoing discussion.

I see you have swerved away from GB News.

But nobody was claiming it wasn't accidental or that it was 'an EV'. The consensus seems to be it was a hybrid battery fire from its appearance in the CCTV.

Hybrids can be diesel so Hopkinson has not ruled it out as you claim.

He has chosen his words carefully.

Did he choose as carefully as Full Fact?

Did you not carefully read the header above that sentence? The header reads, "Our Verdict".

If only people could discern disinformation, misinformation, half-truths and spins from what the Fire Chief actually said. He did not commit himself except to rule out petrol and EV. "At this stage". and uses the term "nothing to suggest".

You can read what you like into his words but I for one will be awaiting confirmation.

Did you not carefully read the header above that sentence?

I did. It's unequivocal. Did you not read the following sentence where it describes the quote you're talking about as being what the chief fire officer "previously told the media"?

They clearly say the fire brigade "confirmed to Full Fact" so they are not talking about what the CFO told the press a few days ago.

I know! I know!! It's the Final Destination of automobiles. This car was supposed to be on the Estonia when it sank but somehow missed the sailing. Fate finally caught up with it.

Let me guess: because GB News is part of the conspiracy?

You're lying. Do you read your own posts? This is the bloody OP, for ****'s sake.
...
Whilst the police confirm the vehicle in question was a diesel car, there has been much speculation and arguing on social media that the car ‘must have been an EV or Hybrid’ as ‘only a lithium battery would explode like that’.

Did you already forget that Fire Chief Andrew Hopkinson has since been quoted on several occasions ruling out an 'EV fire' ('at this stage')? Having a potty-mouthed temper tantrum is churlish and inappropriate.

The mature and level-headed observer will understand that the definitive cause of the fire will not be available for a few weeks. Whilst from the CCTV it looks as though the fire started from a particular identifiable vehicle, it is quite possible that the fire emanated from the vehicle the other side of it, the view of which is blocked by the Range Rover.
