Ed India going down the Dictatorship road fast...

I was questioning whether the actual killers were members of the BJP. :oldroll:

It was sarcasm at your generalistic comment.

No they were not. The BJP came out of the remnants of the Janata party in the 70s. AFAIK Godse was not a politician, just your run of the mill paramilitary anti-Muslim fanatic.

Why so hostile? It is a legitimate question. Indeed some BJP leaders have recently been trying to reform the image of Godse (Mahatma's assassin) from "India's first terrorist" to "India's sapoot[/I (good son)" in a purely race-based sense. But apart from their nonsensical notions about racial purity I don't know of any real connection between Godse and Modi.

I think the ideological connectin is painfully clear.
And you excusese for the attempted rehabliation of Godse is pretty convuluted.

I think it is your reading comprehension that is "convuluted (sic)". I made no such attempt at "rehabliation." Not all racists are part of the same conspiracy.

Orwell spins in his grave as criticism of the government becomes a terrorist act: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-67011231

"Booker Prize-winning novelist Arundhati Roy, who attended Wednesday's protest, said the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act had been amended to include intellectuals, writers and journalists under the definition of terrorists."

****.

"What they are doing here is ratcheting up their power before the coming elections in a very, very brazen way."

Yep. :(

Celebrated novelist Arundhati Roy faces prosecution in India – for a speech she gave in 2010.

Booker Prize-winning writer Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things, has been charged, along with retired law professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain, for allegedly seditious comments supporting the separation of Kashmir from India.

They were speaking at a 2010 Delhi conference, the same year right-wing activist Sushil Pandit filed the complaint on which these latest charges draw.

Nearly 13 years later, on October 10, Delhi’s lieutenant governor V.K. Saxena, with the approval of Narendra Modi’s government, sanctioned the prosecution. Roy and Hussain are accused of making statements promoting social enmity, prejudicing national integration and inciting offences against the state and public tranquillity.

It’s the latest in a series of prosecutions and arrests using India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, which was amended in 2019 to allow the government to designate individuals as terrorists, without following any formal judicial process.

RIP Democracy and Freedom in India.
And generally support Biden, but I hated when he invited MOdi to the White House. Yes, we have to deal with him, but do so at Arm;s length.

"promoting social enmity, prejudicing national integration and inciting offences against the state and public tranquillity" sound like "crimes" invented specifically for the Kashmir situation. Talk about prejudice!

And that is what is scary. Kashmir is the big flashpoint with Pakistan. Modi begins a purge of Muslims in Kashmir, Pakistan will not sit idly by,and the fun will begin.

Canada just arrested three poeple involved in the killing of a Sikh Seperatist .
I hope Canada takes stonger action then just protest. At the least they shoulc close some Indian consulates in Canada and generally hold India at arms length.

As expected BJP is leading. However, the claims of them winning an absolute majority of 400 or more seats in parliament is proving to be empty boasts. More so the exit pollsters who fed the claim are also currently on the backfoot. Current prediction is they will have a lesser majority than in 2019, unless the current Home Minister Amit Shah indulges in his post-election shenanigans of buying off independent/regional party candidates to make them switch alliances.
Also, in a related move, the government has removed access to last night's episode of John Oliver's Last Week Tonight from cable networks and also from Youtube, because of his scathing criticism of Modi and the BJP.
