Christonacracker no wonder everyone thinks you are a bunch of loony terrorists.

Denmark has advised citizens against travel to Saudi Arabia, amid growing anger across the Muslim world at Danish depictions of the Prophet Muhammad.
A newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet, one of which pictured a bomb hidden in his turban, apologised on Monday for offending Muslims.

Islam bans any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad or Allah.

The backlash has included a boycott of Danish goods, diplomatic sanctions, and Islamic militant threats.

Unfortunately, the Muslim world's perception is being defined by its' loonies. Not unlike how the U.S. is about to be with Scalito getting on the court. Just think... we get to experience 19th century civil rights all over again!

And just like in my thread in the Politics section, a sense of "this thread isn't about US affairs and politics, but it should, so I'm going to make it into just that."

Yes indeed.

IIRC she eventually got to keep her collection but wasn't supposed to show them on the windowsill any more.

I think there was another twist in the story after that, but I can't find anything online to back it up.

It seems she didn't get them all back:
Of the seven pigs, however, only three have been returned to Nancy Bennett as the other four were accidentally smashed, for which she was sent £150 compensation (The Daily Telegraph, 10.11.98).
More info here and here.

It seems there was also an allegation that she had placed a quotation from the Quran in the window with the pigs, and that there was "a history of feuding between Ms Bennett, the owner of the china ornaments, and local Muslims".

Hey, thanks Mojo. You are indeed master of the search engine ;)

That reveals the rather unpleasant twist in the story very well.

Islam seems to me to be like Christianity was a few hundred years ago - quick to take offence, agressive in defence, willfully ignorant and generally a dangerous force.

We reigned in the xtians to a large degree. The same needs doing for islam.

But at the moment it seems to be going the other way and religions are about to get extra protection under UK law if Blair gets his way.

I agree with everything except 'was a few hundred years ago.' :D

You have a point there. Christianity has about 600 years evolution on Islam, and 600 years ago the Christians were a very nasty group of people.

I've also noticed xtians in the UK, along with other religious groups, getting more antsy since the islamic thing started. It's as if they are seeing what you can get away with if you shout "racist", "bigot", "free speech" and "human rights" loud enough everytime anyone mentions you, and thinking that they should be getting a piece of the action.

I think "supercoolguy" is a Muslim.

There's someone calling on my glowing red telephone . . .

Consider the fact that most Muslims live in countries where the government controls much of the media. They then make the assumption that other countries operate in a similar manner. Thus, they assume these cartoons are generated by the Danish and Norweigen governments. And when the government actually comes out and says "sorry, but we don't regret publishing them", then these countries MUST be anti-Islamic.

Bottomline: Many Muslims don't understand or appreciate the concept of free speech because they have never experienced it for themselves. And sadly, many don't necessarily want to anyway.

I think being tolerant is about not tolerating the intolerance of intolerant people. However, tolerant people should tolerate intolerant people. Just not the intolerance. Though technically, someone who is tolerant can tolerate intolerance, though they shouldn't, because that would make the tolerant person intolerate. But the alternative is just intolerable.
