I agree in the abstract but I don't trust religion to be taught in schools without it being presented as an alternative to actual facts that actually exists, being turned into "teach the controversy" at best, full on missionarying (that needs to be a word) at worst.

That's why history class is the place. "They founded this religion based on peace and love, and within five years they'd slaughtered half their own country and in another twenty they'd conquered eight neighbors."

Ah-huh. And how do you see the "I'm bringing an AR-15 to storytime to protect my little Layheigh from the drag queen" demographic to reacting to that?

It should be covered in history class. You can't understand huge swathes of human history without knowing the basics of several religions.

No, an actual comparative religions course. What each religion believes. Who wrote it etc. Once one is exposed to the variety of nonsense that different cultures take seriously the lightbulb goes off.

Religious texts are actually terrible with history. There was almost certainly not a Moses. Millions of Jewish people were never slaves in Egypt. There are only tiny bits of the Bible that is actual history.

It's a typo yes. But it is actually Willem Dafoe. He was in Platoon, Spiderman, Mississippi Burning, Boondock Saints, Inside Man. Great Actor.

Yes, I knew you meant Willem Dafoe (one of the great actors of our time, and I've seen every movie you listed)... I was being a silly *******. It puts this whole things into context. If its so horrible to let a guy in drag read to your kid, its also just as horrible to let them watch Mrs. Doubtfire. Guys have been dressing in drag for our entertainment since at least Shakespearean times.

Also, means you didn't copy and paste that list, those were just actors and actresses that you could recall being in drag.

As did Guy Siner in one of last weekend's repeats of 'Allo 'Allo. I think he's straight - he's a very private man but has apparently been know to date the odd actress.

Mind you, Kim Hartman looked good in that episode too - in a basque, greatcoat and tin helmet.

Lol, and Rene was always running away from her advances.... Vicki Michelle OTOH...

...that's what I'm suggesting is properly taught in history. It's historical information.

Not what I suggested at all. I'm not saying teach religion as history, I'm saying information about religions is historical information.

I'm confused by why some are reacting as if this is a novel idea: I was taught about the major religions in history (or "social studies") classes when I was a kid. Public school, US, in the 80s and 90s. It wasn't controversial in the least. In a world history class "this is the unit on the Middle East, here are the major tenets of Islam, here is the timeline of the development and spread of Islam, here are the various splits and branches" etc.

I mean it's a moot point. SCOTUS is going to declare this a Christian Nation by like a week from next Thursday so this is all gonna get covered under the Blasphemy Laws Emperor DeSantis will decree.

Well that's a mistake. Sarcasm on the Internet? What were you thinking? :D

I agree.

I'm just a huge movie fan. I remembered more than a few later. Like Philip Seymour Hoffmann, Tom Hanks, Peter Scolari, Jude Law John Leguizamo. There has been drag in movies since the beginning of cinema although not so much during the Hays Code era.

The little boys showed up in their sisters' dresses at school the next day demanding to use the girls' bathroom apparently now confused as to their gender.
Alas we cannot use this yardstick, it's holiday time here.

IIRR the on-set gossip was that Siner was straight but Kaye was gay.

I think everyone should take a comparative religions course.

It should be covered in history class. You can't understand huge swathes of human history without knowing the basics of several religions.

You are both correct.

A comparative religions course is not about history; it's about comparing their beliefs, customs, holy books, etc. It's learning about the religion itself. Religion in history and a religion's history are different matters. That's when you discuss how the religions historically developed, spread and influenced/affected events.

They both need to be taught because they are different subjects.

I took a comparative religions course in high school and loved it. Ironically, it only strengthened by atheism. I also taught history including how different religions affected world events. We only briefly covered their beliefs.
