Drag Shows!!

Millions of Americans homeless, unaffordable housing, crumbling infrastructure, attacks on our freedom and democracy, inflation, climate change, transportation needs, education, racism, labor issues and all they can talk about is that there are gay people out there and just maybe one of them will turn them gay.

This so called issue that sometimes men dress up on stage as a woman should be embarrassing to anyone who brings it up. But this is zenith of Republican imagination. They don't have any ideas so they double down on hate.

Well, you wouldn't want all those undesirables to be confused. It is part of the great cultural crusade to make sure they know exactly why God and his loyal minions hate them.

Since when does logic have anything to with performances that usually have a comedic intent?

By the way drag isn't always gay performances and women also do drag.

Here's a short list of straight men who have done drag:.

Robin Williams
Billy Crystal
Tony Curtis
Jack Lemon
Patrick Swayze
Kurt Russell
William Dafoe
Wesley Snipes
Eddie Murphy
Johnny Depp
Cillian Murphy
Jared Lehto
John Travolta
Adam Sandler
Tyler Perry
Martin Lawrence
Dana Carvey
Liev Schreiber
Hugo Weaving
Guy Pearce
Ving Rhames
Dustin Hoffmann
Gene Hackman

Here are women who have appeared in drag:
Cate Blanchett
Drew Barrymore
Angelina Jolie
Hillary Swank
Barbara Streisand
Julie Andrews
Amanda Bynes
Gwyneth Paltrow
Lucy Liu
Glenn Close

Drag has been part of the theater since theater began.

There has been a lot of conflation in this thread about actors playing roles that involve cross dressing... and actual drag. Robin Williams didn't do drag. Robin Williams played a character that cross-dressed to spend time with their children.

Julie Andrews didn't do drag. Julie Andrews played a character that cross-dressed as a male in order to obtain a career position that excluded females.

These are not the same thing. Please stop pretending that they're the same.

Drag is a type of cross-dressing, but not all cross-dressing is drag.
Some A are B, but not all B are A.

The problem I have is that in all of those scenarios, the underlying premise relies on an exaggerated and offensive caricature of females in the first place. Mocking the idea that gay males are like females relies on females being mock-worthy in the first place. Mocking the idea of males conforming to the social expectations of females relies on females being worthy of mockery.

Literally none of that is true and rests on your own conclusion that the purpose is to mock in the first place.

It isn't mocking women to exaggerate social expectations placed on them. It is often the exact opposite. The caricatures aren't of 'females' but femininity, and often aren't even caricatures. It doesn't mean women are worthy of being mocked to mock the idea gay men are like women. That's just bizarre reasoning. I don't have to mock Canadians to mock the idea that I'm just like one.

I don't want to control performances of femininity any more than your average black person wants to control performances of blackness. I do, however, want society as a whole to turn as critical an eye toward the caricatured performance of femininity as presented by males as it does toward the caricatured performance of blackness as presented by white people.

This is plainly untrue. Turning a critical eye towards it has happened and your ideas have been found with little to no support. What you're objecting to is that people don't agree with you. You're defining 'turning a critical eye' as 'coming to the same conclusions as me'. This is why you invoke your own chromosomes as support while ignoring that those with the same XX tend to disagree greatly. Your arguments are only consistent with you wanting to gatekeep femininity far more than you claim, likely more than you think you do.

It isn't subtle even if you're using an erudite tone.

I'm not the one that described it that way. The Trans Advocacy Organizations are the ones that have decided that drag is part of Trans. I think it's an entirely different and completely unrelated thing.

Just who exactly are "The Trans Advocacy Organizations", and where does one find them?

Would you please cite examples, with sources, which demonstrate this (apparently collective) decision that "drag is part of Trans".

Historically it was, but that doesn't mean they were ever the same thing. It isn't that drag is a subset of being transgender, but that drag is often used, and influenced, by transgender people.

Again, more historically than now.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But you are 100 percent wrong on this. Drag IS dressing or disguising as the opposite sex on stage or on film

BTW, I think it is hilarious that you brought up Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria. In that movie Julie played a woman disguising herself as man that was a female impersonator otherwise known as a drag queen. Very funny movie directed by her husband. Good call.

I'm a woman, and it's never occurred to me to think that drag is "an offensive caricature of women".

I only heard about such an opinion after reading parts of these hot-button threads.

It may be a caricature, but I don't find it offensive.

A common problem with conspiracy theories.

In related news, Parliament Street has several drag performers today. And there were children present.....

Were they permanently scarred? Or did they yawn? Or maybe laughed?

Robert Di Niro in "Stardust". He played Captain Shakespeare who was a cross-dressing pirate.
