The DeSantis gambit

Now the board has given themselves the power to impose code enforcement fines on Disney, including the ability to make those fines subject to foreclosure, "meaning they could theoretically be used to seize Disney’s property."

Small government, everyone.

Allow the petty martinets onto the property, but charge then $600 a day for the privilege, cash up front.

Yep.
Protecting private property is the most important role of the government - unless we don't like the people.

The Government can pass laws. You are forgetting about "Sovereign Risk". Look it up.

What the hell are you talking about? Armitage72's post had nothing to do with the government's debts, so sovereign risk isn't relevant to his post or mine. Nothing in this post of yours actually responds to my question.

Plus a processing fee of $500 for every fine received by Disney.

Oh, it would be very amusing to see Disney try to pull that off, but I'm pretty sure they're not that stupid. Try it yourself next time you get a speeding ticket or other fine, see what happens.

Ya, it is really stupid to imagine a corporation strong arming a state government.

It really is quite amusing to see Trump and DeSantis ads tearing each other down. But I have no doubt Ronnie will be all up Donnie's butt when/if the Orange Mussolini gets the nomination.

You think he will lead Trump for the GOP nomination?

Nah! I think Trump will be the leader and win the nomination.

I said I welcomed bets.

I think Trump's support will wither once de Santis steps in the ring. He's everything the Republicans want - younger, anti-everything-that-triggers-libtards, far right on guns, and free of baggage.

Small, tiny cog in the grand scheme of things but Jacksonville, the largest city in the US that was still mostly GOP controlled, elected a Democratic Mayor yesterday.

I don't know if it will make a dent against the DeSantis Machine or any meaningful political pushback, but it's still nice.

A silver lining to the rugged individualism of the American public is that I suspect a lot of people in this country find the policies of the authoritarian right deeply creepy and invasive, even if they aren't particularly sympathetic to the targeted populations.

These MAGA freaks and DeSantis types are like the worst HOA tyrants upjumped to offices of serious responsibility. Democrats could probably make a lot of headway running on a "don't let these weird freaks have the authority to bother you" platform.

Weird freaks shrieking at school board meetings and terrorizing librarians for showing Disney movies might be catnip for the right wing base, but I gotta believe this comes across as deeply offputting even to the less politically engaged bulk of the American public. Those that aren't convinced that these people are evil may be reached by pointing out that these people are just super annoying.

Problem with that hypothesis is that de Santis' support withered on the vine once Trump threw his hat in the ring.

I'll propose a bet, if de Santis beats Trump I'll wear whatever avatar you propose for a year (within forum rules) and vice versa if Trump beats de Santis. If neither win or one of them doesn't make the starting line, no avatar changes.

I'm hoping you are right. Not only did we elect a Democratic Mayor yesterday but a Democratic Property Appraiser (an oddly powerful and fiercely contested office around these parts), and we one 6 out of the 8t open City Council positions that were up for reelection where there was actually and even that was sorta weird because in one race there were only two Democrats and in one race there were only two Republicans running so only one Republican actually beat a Democrat for the office.

Now to be fair our local politics in the last few years have been dominated by a scandal involving a plot to sell off our local community owned utility company, so this could all be a fluke. (Politics is weird and the voting public is fickle being something I doubt I have to defend too hard as a statement)

I think he's trying to be like Trump, and trying to win over the MAGA crowd. But why would MAGA people vote for him when they can have Trump?

DeSantis is...boring.

Because oftentimes the worst thing that really crazy like Trump does is it lets normal crazy like DeSantis pretend they were never really crazy because, I mean come on at least they aren't really crazy.

DeSantis is the political equivalent of a 9/11 Conspiracy Theorist playing the "Oh come on at least I'm not one of the 9/11 Conspiracy Theorist who thinks hit the planes that the towers were holographic, I'm just a NORAML 9/11 Conspiracy Theorist." game.

A LOT of really, really, really bad politicians are going to be playing some version of the "I know you agreed with every hateful, dangerous, wrong thing that Trump said but he was too over the top, so I'll say all the same hateful, dangerous, wrong things but hey my suit fits properly and I have a decent haircut" game over the next few years.
