Go woke, go broke

That said, how do I know I'm not just prejudiced? Well, because I did have the exact same complaint when the roles WERE flipped around.

In February 2001, almost two decades before anyone even coined the term 'woke', the game Grandia 2 came out in Europe. (And yes, I was one of those dumbasses who had went and bought a Dreamcast.) The protagonist is a 'strong and independent' mercenary, who is soon saddled with escorting a priestess who has gotten herself a bit of a case of terminal demonic possession. As in, has got a clock ticking down so to speak. And the guy is a complete ass to her and puts her down in any conversation.

Difference from the current productions, though: that's not supposed to be something good. It's not a role-model for males. It's supposed to be the start of his arc to become a better person.

But by the time he got better, he'd lost any empathy from me. I just can't relate to that kind of protagonist.

Another thing that I did complain before, is the anime series Konosuba. The guy is absolutely useless at least in the beginning (after which I stopped watching), and only good for 'comedic' shenanigans like stealing panties. Yet he keeps complaining that the OTHERS are useless, including people who saved his life. You know, toxic manager type.

I just can't relate to that.

So hmm, if I have the exact same reaction when it's a female doing it as when it's a male, does it mean I'm biased? Well, I don't doubt that some people's cognitive dissonance would resolve that way.

Both mythical characters, nothing wrong with adding a little diversity there. Are people actually going to argue that mermaids, dragons, ghosts, elves, trolls, dwarfs, fairies, witches, warlocks, can only be white?? That would be very silly.

Some people threw a fit when Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall in the MCU. There were also people complaining about black elves and dwarves in "Rings of Power".

Just pointing out certain facts. If you didn't think they applied to you, you wouldn't have got het up about them.

It is absolutely a fact that people lie to themselves about their biases and prejudices
.

So it you dare to criticise the "Little Mermaid" remake you are a racist?
SOmone seems to be pretty full of himself around here.

Regardless of the cast, I just find it unnecessary, like most of the live action adaptations. It's returning to the well instead of trying something new. Maybe it will be amazing, like the live action Jungle Book was, but it's more likely to be mediocre, like pretty much all the other ones. It would be interesting if they decided to go in a different direction and more faithfully adapt the original story, but they probably don't want to traumatize young audience members.

FTFY :)

No, not what I said at all. I said racism was a reason why people criticise films when they include non-white actors in prominent roles. And most people who criticise media for racist reasons fool themselves into thinking they have valid reasons for said criticism.

Itis fairly easy for others to spot those fooling themselves.

How do others spot those fooling themselves?

I haven't seen any of the Disney live action remakes but I have seen the whole excruciating Rings of Power which has black actors in prominent roles. I can tell you why I hated it and it's because of the lack of good story telling, poor characterisation and unsympathetic portrayal of certain characters. Am I fooling myself?

Yeah, I have to agree with the above, I'm in my third attempt to watch it, and some of the scenes are just cringe-worthy. I'm wondering if it needs a fan version with Jar-Jar the Harfoots removed.

The reason I used that example is that the “if you don’t like it you are racist” tactic was used by the makers when people started to criticise it. Most of the criticisms had nothing to do with black elves and dwarfs and everything to do with the points I mentioned, plus not being true to the “lore” which is something I don’t care about.

I didn't see that. I only saw that when they were responding to criticism of them having black actors.

I must admit it jarred with me - not in any big deal, just in an 'Oh...ok then' need to readjust expectations from years of reading the comics and a general expectation of what 'Norse' looked like. No issue beyond that initial few seconds of surprise / readjust though.

If their sales are still down in 2 months time I'll be surprised.

Another week, more decline:

https://nypost.com/2023/05/09/bud-lights-sales-drop-is-accelerating-amid-dylan-mulvaney-fiasco/

(The New York Post reports that) Bump Williams Consulting and NielsenIQ report that Bud Light sales continue to drop. Not only that, but consumers are increasingly avoiding other brands in the Anheuser-Busch portfolio.

The main metric everyone seems to be looking at is retail sales by volume, compared to one year earlier. Right now, that number is reportedly down about 23% compared to this time last year. I understand wareyin to be predicting that the number on July 2 of this year will be equal to or higher than the number on July 2 of last year.

I guess we'll find out in another few weeks.

They'll bounce back, but I expect it'll take longer than a couple months.

Some YT vid I watched a couple days ago had a dude yank a 24 or 30 pack out of his garage beer fridge and slap in a similar sized pack of.... Coors.
[emoji12]

Granted there wasn't today's connected world but I wonder how long Coors was down for their gay support ~35 years ago.

I gotta say, considering how clear it is that a lot of critics here have very different problems with a lot of films than diversity decisions in casting, shouldn't this thread then be "Make bad movies, go broke?"

I mean, I doubt AB is going out of business because of this. Over time, their sales volume will start to trend up again.

I think the better long-term metric is the shift of market share to their competitors. It's not like these beer drinkers stopped drinking beer altogether. They just started drinking the competition instead. I doubt they're going to switch back any time soon. Or ever. To recover that market share, AB will probably have to compete with Coors et al for some share of new beer drinkers. 21 year olds who think that American lite beer is their jam, who could be convinced that Bud Light is the better choice. I'm not sure how AB makes that happen. More LGBTQ+ promotional events? I understand kids these days are into that sort of thing.
