Roger. I can appreciate and applaud your efforts to live an energy frugal lifestyle it's really not enough to get anywhere near the "real zero" Thungerg and her fans are demanding. Thunberg may claim her autism as some sort of superpower that puts her ability to see things more clearly than us mere mortals however she still fails to predict the riots that would inevitably result in any meaningful attempt to avert 1.5C warming.

We're talking riots that would make the French Yellow Vest ones look like preschool. Maybe that's what she and her supporters want, a total destruction of the developed world. Which would of course lead to countries like Tuvalu reverting back to a pre-contact lifestyle as their landbases won't support a developing lifestyle and the foreign aid they rely on will dry up.

Of course if the developed nations do take a stab at massive emission reductions then naturally the developing nations, the ones that are still allowed to emit whatever they please a few of them, like China, will see their economies tank in response to reduced western buying power. Maybe other developing nations will take up the slack if China lowers their prices, I don't know.

Germany, the greenest country in the world just trashed their opportunity to become more reliant on wind and solar now that their energy relationship with Russia has been severed, figuratively and literally. Although they made a great show of chastising Qatar by wearing One Love armbands while standing in front of the cameras, behind the scenes, they were making multi year gas deals to protect their economy.

Fair enough.

Maybe people will channel their inner Spock and think it's only logical that we give up everything to save the planet for our grandchildren then. They're be no rioting and hoarding, just a peaceful transition to the new normal with plenty of free government counselors available for those who have trouble adjusting to the new normal.

Hey, speaking of the Maldives, I'm sure the Maldivian president and ministers had fun staging their underwater cabinet meeting in 2009 however they failed to take any significant steps to reduce the emissions impacts of their largest industry, high end fly in tourism. Remember kids, Greta says you won't be able to fly so once the boomers age out then The Maldives are going to have to find a new gig.

Looking at the tea leaves, it looks to me like China will shortly be busting but to get off the coal train.

I also think electrical energy executives are going to do the right thing and completely divest from fossil fuels in the near future, but I think they could use a big shove.

Fossil fuels are no longer "cheap"

Market forces in play.

The BBC begs to differ. There were lots of young women stating that they wouldn't bring a child into this world due to climate concerns when Thunberg was out doing her thing. Maybe it was all acting for the camera. I've also received correspondence from my kid's high school about dealing with climate anxiety. Given that thunberg's Twitter feed is a non stop parade of climate disasters and alarmist publications, she
s certainly not helping with climate anxiety.

What are the chances...I could mention that and get one of those pieces of correspondence the very next day inviting me to a Zoom meeting on dealing with Eco-Anxiety. My kid says his school is only playing a minor role in driving this so it has to be influence by media sources.

I think I'll attend and recommend students stop following Greta Thunberg on social media and see if I get the same sort of reaction I'd get if I'd insulted a major religious figure.

Kids have "climate anxiety" because the idiots of the world are trying to prevent action to stop climate climate change that threatens their future. Their anxiety is justified, these right wing nut bars are perusing a religious agenda that threatens the future of today's children. Of course children will be anxious about it.

If you really want to do something constructive focus your efforts on those that are actually causing the problem instead of blaming those who will suffer the consequences. Oh, and stop inventing problems that don't exist like "climate activists hate western countries and just want to destroy our economy" or "We can't do it, free markets are useless so all we can do is accept our fate and wait for the rapture"

Why not instead actually promote the more moderate solutions you say you support, instead of focusing on a potential ally who may only be wrong in degree?

Are you kidding me? Kids have climate anxiety due to right wing nutbars? Those same right wing nutbars that are saying climate change is a hoax? Really?

Well you gotta try what you gotta try while fat white lefties continue to enjoy their upper middle class lifestyle pigging out at the fossil fuels trough and if you can shift the blame on to the right then maybe your children will buy it, until they figure it out for themselves. So go ahead book that flight to Fiji for your holiday, guilt free, because it's totally sustainable and will contribute nothing to climate change.

It's constant stories in the mainstream media and activists using lines like "Our house is on fire", "We are at the beginning of a mass extinction" and kicking the crap out of carbon sequestration efforts like at Drax. Gee, that's not going to terrify young people at all now is it?

So I'm one of these right wing religious nutjobs inventing problems like "We can't do it, free markets are useless so all we can do is accept our fate and wait for the rapture" now? Lol, I guess it's five o'clock somewhere.

One author thinks the way to deal with climate change anxiety is to teach kids that they're racist, that they're only stressing out because they want to preserve their White privilege, their way of life.

I'll have to read the room before trying that route. if the avoid the news tactic goes over like a pregnant pole vaulter then I'll probably just switch it off as my kid, no his buddies are stressing out about climate change. I could suggest increasing wind and solar installations even though we're all on hydroelectric and it wound't make a drop of difference to the climate. It would look good though. If we could get students advocating for a project, say at the school itself it might help with their anxiety in being part of that process.

Here's one of the media articles I was talking about.

Most of Western Canada's glaciers will melt in 80 years, University of Northern B.C. study finds

study author said:
"That requires an investment from the individual up to the international community to really move away from greenhouse gases and that's primarily through decarbonization of our industries and way of life."

One idea might to be to pose the question....What is meant by decarbonizing our way of life?" and asking for student feedback that' actually realistic. How can students consider themselves part of the solution, outside of standing around holding a sign?

Holding a sign? Your mischaracterising of action on climate change is breathtaking.

Probably. Maybe because they know they are lying to them.

Turn on a TV and there they are! They aren't hiding the crazy from anyone.

The right is causing anxiety across the board for everyone that has any sense.

More interesting to me is that this thread long ago devolved into some of those on the right attacking a teenager for not doing enough about climate change, which is some Super-Duper level hypocrisy laden bullcrap. Over three years of it now.

"But she said she'd accomplish more and hasn't!" That's all I get from it.

We know these folk don't care about climate change, they just want to attack anyone who does someone.

This apparently makes them feel good about themselves....like that perhaps they were right all along about....I dunno? Something?

Most of us see it. It's like a temper-tantrum thread. Come on in, get emotional and make a fool of yourself because....?

I know what your point is. What do you think it is?

"But she said she'd accomplish more and hasn't!" That's all I get from it.

No one has argued about what she said she would accomplish.

It is about what she has demanded, which has been ignored by any entity with the ability to do anything about her demands.

It's like a temper-tantrum thread. Come on in, get emotional and make a fool of yourself because....?

The only tantrums I see are from you and others, against anyone who points out that Greta's activism has done nothing to mitigate the problems she calls for action on.

Her detractors, including me, are not saying she is wrong or not well intentioned; only that she is ineffective.

You are welcome to show otherwise..

Nobody here is on the right that's just a bogeyman that keeps popping up. What's being attacked is Thunberg's style of activism and how just going out and voting for a non-existent political party with non-existent environmental policies that will magically make the planet all green and healthy while continuing to preserve our developed world lifestyles. Thunberg never said she'd do anything, except talk.

Want to go green? Cut up your drivers licence and burn your passport, for starters.

Is that all you've got? Well then, Spock maybe you have a plan as to how this climate utopia is supposed to come about or is winging about the right getting all emotional your best shot?

Temper tantrum is a good way to describe Greta's activism. Mgidm's ire is legitimate, just misplaced.

You all are still going on and on about the same ****.

I direct your nitpicking back to Roger's post:
"We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of Now. This is not time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism." - Martin Luther King Jr.

You could move on, you know.
