More brilliant plans from the worlds formerly richest, biggest genius...

Twitter is working on a plan that would force users to opt in to targeted ads, removing a years-old privacy setting that gives users more control over their data, according to a report in the Platformer newsletter. But that’s not all! The new strategy may mandate that you share your location information and let Twitter sell your data to third-parties. What’s more, the company may compel your consent for targeted advertising using your contacts and the phone number you provided for two-factor authentication. These aren’t just brilliant ideas; they are also almost certainly illegal.

Article goes on that this would fall afoul of California law, EU law, and Apples TOS on their app store.

If it wasn’t for the CCPA, the FTC, the GDPR, Apple, and Twitter’s own users, selling your data and showing you more targeted ads would solve a lot of Twitter’s problems.

If only it wasn't for those pesky laws, Twitter could just rake in the cash!!!

If the reporting is correct it shows several things. One that Musk is indeed stupid, two he is uninformed, anyone who only reads headline stories about technology will know the business peril in these sort of ideas. Another that the claim that no one can say no to him and continue to work for him is true (see the second point). And that he really had no idea what he was buying and had done no prior planning apart from telling someone to buy him a washbasin.

I thought freedom was back at Twitter. What happened?

It's the Right Wing version of Freedom. Essentially it states that "I"should be free to do whatever I want, and that includes restricting the freedom of any\everyone else who doesn't agree with how I think things should be. If you are homogeneous and obedient to right wing though, only then can you be allowed to have "freedom"

I'd be careful accusing right wingers of being this, they might misunderstand you. :D

Update on the firing situation.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy...twitter-as-layoff-lawsuits-mount-report-says/

Twitter is facing a lot of lawsuits including from people who claim he is not paying their severance packages. Musk is apparently trying to break his promise on severance. What a surprise.

I suppose it comes down to whether Musk's offer of severance is considered to be legally binding, or whether it was merely "banter" and that any severance due was that detailed in the employees' contracts - probably none.

If he was within his rights to offer three months and then renege on the offer, it's still an absolutely ****** thing to do.

Anyway, this tweet containing a letter from some lawyers to Musk should clarify the legal situation.

I think it's real.

Finally, I discovered an amusing rhyme in the second page of comments on this story.

To the tune of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Elon the thin skinned billionaire
Bought a very shiny site;
And just like FSD Beta now
it only turns hard right

As you say a no-no in civilised jurisdictions.

Update: The @elonjet account is now back. As best one can tell, it was banned for violating a rule that did not exist at the time of the "violation." It is currently online, though it has not posted a location of Elon's jet since two days ago. We'll see what happens the next time the plane moves.
"Shadow banned" and now banned, plus impotent threats of legal action. Very Muskie.

So the anit-doxxing initiative got weird... again.

In the very thread where Elon was accusing someone of jumping on someone's car (supposedly thinking Musk was in the car), Elon also posted a short vid of someone he accused of being that individual (along with their license plate), asking if anyone knows the person. If someone were to share identifying information of this person, wouldn't that violate the very type of privacy that Elon is trying to enforce?

It's almost like he has no idea what he's doing, and just making it up as he goes along. Personally, I think an intelligent person would engage in a little bit of forethought.

It's quite simple, no doxxing people he likes but anyone he dislikes is fair game.

It's the same w.r.t. free speech, it's free for opinions he likes, not so much for those he doesn't.

edited to add....

It's his playpen, he gets to set the rules and he and his mates get to do what they want.

One of the comments on that article I think is pretty good. The poster said Elon is a "genius".... a "stoner genius". Only, unlike most stoners he has billions in capital. He has some "great" idea and can't think of why no one has never thought of it before! Then haphazardly implements it and finds out, actually, yeah theres reasons Twitter didn't operate like he wants it to.

I just deactivated my Twitter account. Tired of Elon and all the ********.

No big loss for them, but I'm done.

Has he banned the porn accounts yet? Last I checked this was a major priority for right wingers.

His big complaint was censorship on Twitter, so he bought it.

Porn is low on the conservative list unless it is gay porn. That's why they are going after drag story hour at libraries. Big target there!

We know they are gigantic hypocrites so I will assume most of them watch porn, just like we know that many of the anti-abortion folk have paid for abortions.

Maybe Musk will get to it, maybe he won't. Maybe he likes porn. He may not be a party line kinda guy on every issue, but he ticks all the boxes for being they kind of guy they like (*******, crazy, reckless, a pig).
