More brilliant plans from the worlds formerly richest, biggest genius...

Twitter is working on a plan that would force users to opt in to targeted ads, removing a years-old privacy setting that gives users more control over their data, according to a report in the Platformer newsletter. But that’s not all! The new strategy may mandate that you share your location information and let Twitter sell your data to third-parties. What’s more, the company may compel your consent for targeted advertising using your contacts and the phone number you provided for two-factor authentication. These aren’t just brilliant ideas; they are also almost certainly illegal.

Article goes on that this would fall afoul of California law, EU law, and Apples TOS on their app store.

If it wasn’t for the CCPA, the FTC, the GDPR, Apple, and Twitter’s own users, selling your data and showing you more targeted ads would solve a lot of Twitter’s problems.

If only it wasn't for those pesky laws, Twitter could just rake in the cash!!!

If I hadn't already deleted my Twitter account, I certainly would now. Which is saying something because I don't think I used one factual piece of information when signing up for my account, and never did 2FA, but that's cringe worthy stuff right there. You're going to lose LOTS of tech nerds over stuff like that, but it might be possible you pick up an advertiser. I'm assuming if they require location information and want to be able to sell it, that would be good money, but I really don't think it's legal.

If Tesla keeps dropping in price, Musk's wealth might disappear like the Cheshire cat, leaving only the smile, Twitter.:D

So a couple of things have happened.

The @elonjet account has been banned.
All accounts associated with its creator, Jack Sweeny, have also been banned, including his personal one.
Elon Musk had previously promised that he would not be banning this account.

Here's where it gets really dumb. Twitter has updated its policy on publishing "private" info. Notably, there is a new rule regarding live location info.
Under this policy, you can’t share the following types of private information, without the permission of the person who it belongs to:
live location information, including information shared on Twitter directly or links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes, actual physical location, or other identifying information that would reveal a person’s location, regardless if this information is publicly available;

So you know how sometimes you're watching a sportsball game and during a lull they'll show some of the celebrities in the audience? If you were to tweet the exact same info - Al Pacino is at the Lions game right now - that is in violation of the policy. Seems like it might be a bit too broad!

Update: The @elonjet account is now back. As best one can tell, it was banned for violating a rule that did not exist at the time of the "violation." It is currently online, though it has not posted a location of Elon's jet since two days ago. We'll see what happens the next time the plane moves.

So back where people were debating Musk's intelligence, I think those commenting missed something. One of the best things ever created in D&D was separating intelligence from Wisdom.

Musk is intelligent. Although not as much as he and others like to portray him as.

He is also a damn fool. And getting worse every day. We all need someone to tell us when we are full of crap. Musk seems to get rid of anyone that can provide that service for him.

It would have run afoul of customers just saying "screw it".

Re the Ukraine phone numbers; So Elon is going to go all in on supporting Putin's
Peace Plan"

If so then Muck Fusk.

Don't forget Charisma, which is the other leg of that triad. You can get a long way on Charisma if you're lacking in either Intelligence or Wisdom, or both.

And more free speech restrictions from the guy who says he's all about free speech... and even specifically said he'd allow this account to continue. BTW, flight plans are a matter of public record, the kid was just aggregating them and posting to twitter.

Geez and this is coming from the Post (a right wing rag), not the Times.

The reader comments give the hilighted away, wow. Never thought I'd see them defending Elmo like they have been. But then it kinda makes sense in a twisted way since we know they are hypocrites. And they worship dickheads.

The kid has made thousands because of the press. Good for him. The article mentions that other famous peoples' flights are tracked on Twitter yet none have been banned. Shocker.

Elmo bought Twitter for the whacko right wingers. I thought this from the moment he announced interest in Twitter. He went from complaining about Trump being banned to buying the company. Everything he has done has been consistent with this.

The Elonjet account is now banned... again.

The originator of the account made the same thing on Instagram, giving updated positions of Elon's plane. For a time, attempting to tweet a link to that IG account would be blocked by twitter on the grounds that it is a site that is "potentially harmful." I just tweeted a link to it and it did work. I'll let you know if I get banned.

To poke at the Ukraine phone numbers, they may be usable again, now. I don't have proof, but the restoration probably happened only after a bit of outcry.

To poke at a bit of speculation/potential backstory -

Last Sunday, Elon Musk announced on his page in the social network that “bots are in for a surprise.” The head of Twitter did not explain what the “surprise” was supposed to be, but after this tweet, the social network blocked the traffic of approximately 30 providers around the world. The countries of the Asia-Pacific region “got” the most.

A little later, the social network quickly unblocked the operators and announced to them that the problems arose due to “routing configuration changes”, but, as we can see, the problem remains relevant for Ukraine.

Musk is claiming to be taking legal action against Sweeney (creator of @elonjet) because somebody did something to one of Elon's cars? Sweeney only ever posted the location of airplanes.

Seems like the type of confusion that would plague a not-smart person.

Seems to me exactly like someone using any excuse to get what they want - which seems to be Musk's standard approach.

Twitter is his plaything now and he can use it how he likes. I think Twitter users need to recognise this and consider their usage accordingly.
