How is Manchin a Democrat?

If it means anything....

From: CNN
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Joe Manchin on Wednesday announced a deal on an energy and health care bill...the measure would invest $369 billion into energy and climate change programs...Medicare would be empowered to negotiate the prices of certain medications, and it would cap out-of-pocket costs...It would also extend expiring enhanced subsidies for Affordable Care Act coverage...
...
To raise revenue, the bill would impose a 15% minimum tax on corporations... The current deal also aims to close the carried interest loophole...The package also calls for providing more funding to the IRS for tax enforcement, which would raise $124 billion.

Which I guess explains why Manchin is a democrat. Because as frustrating as he has been to deal with, he can (on occasion) be willing to at least partly support things the democrats want to do (even if its not everything the majority of the Democrats wanted.)

That'll kill it for the Republicans.

Won't you think of the corporations? They're people, too!

He resists climate change legislation, as we see Europe fry and the USA boil and drown.

He resists higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

How exactly is this man a Democrat? I mean yes its great that his seat gives the Democrats control in the Senate, but what else has he done? Anything?

Manchin may be one of the most prominent anti-democratic Democrats, but he is far from alone, especially throughout the party's elder leadership cadre, ...and one of the worst of all sits rocking himself back and forth, humming behind the Resolute (not to be confused with Jack or Slick,...that wasn't them doing the humming).

There is some speculation that Manchin and Schumer may have worked together to put one over on McConnell.

Corporate Dims find a way to give more public succor to corporations and wealthy stockholders while continuing to shaft workers, families, youth, women, poc, and the disadvantaged. Exactly who is it they delusionally expect to turnout in November to vote for any of them except maybe the few republicans that actually hate Trump?

You seem to have spelled "anything" incorrectly?

Won't even get to Republicans. Sinema will oppose this based on that.

Really? Interesting.

You see, the deal that Manchin struck with Schumer involved investments in green energy and efforts to expand health care. And before that, he agreed to the bill that provided infrastructure spending. I was under the assumption that the majority of Democrats WANTED those things. Good thing you're here to tell me that no, Democrats don't want infrastructure spending. No, they don't want improved health care. No, they don't want spending on green technology.

He resists climate change legislation, as we see Europe fry and the USA boil and drown.

He resists "climate change legislation" because he knows the doom-and-gloom predictions are bogus, and that many previous doomsday predictions have proved to be baseless. And the US and Europe are not boiling and drowning.

He resists higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

E-freakin-gads, how much more do you want the wealthy to pay in taxes? Why do you want to make employers--you know, the people who employ others--pay more taxes? Do you think this will make them better able to expand and hire more people?

Ditto for corporations. The corporate income tax is a foolish form of double taxation. Corporations already pay billions for their employees' health insurance, paid time off, Social Security, dental insurance, matching 401Ks, not to mention the billions they pay in state and local taxes. Corporations provide most of the best jobs that so many people want to get, but you liberals want to take even more money from them.

How's he a Democrat? Well, he voted Guilty in both of Trump's Senate trials. He voted for the pedophile-lenient, I-can't-define-what-a-woman-is radical Katanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. He's voted for nearly all of Biden's other judicial nominees. He voted for Biden's infrastructure bill. He voted for the gun control bill.

Perhaps your real question should be, "Why isn't Manchin a radical liberal Democrat like most of the other Senate Democrats?"

Because he registered his party affiliation as Democratic Party.

Beat me to it. I'm curious who folks think would replace Manchin as the Senator from W. Virginia. Someone that votes with Sanders most of the time?

Precisely what does he do to improve Democratic propositions in West Virginia? Does he sell Biden's platform to voters? Does he campaign for Democrats in the state legislature? Does he remind the people of West Virginia they used to take up arms against the mother$%^&*(! coal barons to fight for workers' rights?

When you think of it as what he's not doing that other senators do, not only is he stealing a Senate seat, he's preventing the Democrats from winning others in West Virginia.
I guess that's what they imagine.

Its pretty amazing that any democrat is a Senator in a state that voted for Trump by more than a 2:1 Margin in the last election. Must be stealing that seat from a more progressive Dem.

I've lived in Seattle almost all my life. For the first 40 years of my life, it would break 90 degrees maybe two days a summer if that. Now, it's 20 days a year. It would break 100 degrees maybe once every 5 to 10 years. Now it breaks a hundred every year and we've had years recently where 100 plus degrees would last for a week.

A hell of a lot more. The wealthy in the US are grotesquely undertaxed. There are more and more homeless every year and the division of wealth only continues to grow. Higher taxes generally has little to no effect on employment.

Ditto for corporations. The corporate income tax is a foolish form of double taxation. Corporations already pay billions for their employees' health insurance, paid time off, Social Security, dental insurance, matching 401Ks, not to mention the billions they pay in state and local taxes. More nonsense. It's not double taxation because corporations are a special form of personhood. No liability, lack of accountability. Don't want all those benefits, return to being a private company.

That's not being a Democrat. That's just not being a sham. Trump was and is a corrupt evil undemocratic POS. Anyone with even the the smallest amount of integrity would have voted guilty as did a half a dozen Republicans did.

He voted for the pedophile-lenient, I-can't-define-what-a-woman-is radical Katanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court.
You're only pointing out that Manchin isn't a whoring Republican, not what makes him a Democrat. KBJ is hardly a radical.

Republican Paul Ryan, and 2012 VP nominee praised Ketanji's intellect, character znd integrity saying it is "unequivocal." KBJ confirmed by the full Senate by voice vote to the DC District Court.

Not ALL predictions have happened, and SOME just haven't happened Yet. But many have:

Climate Change Predictions from the Past are Coming True
For many years climate scientists have been warning us about climate change and more specifically, global warming. Were they right? To simply put it, yes.

In 2012, a 108 page study was released written by scientists all around the world, including the US. They have so many predictions about what the next 20 years will hold for the environment. One section predicted more intense storms over the next two decades. Although it has only been nine years, that can already be seen. 2020 had a record number of severe storms, one of them being the derecho that hurt so many in Iowa.

In that same study, scientists predicted extreme changes in water cycles. They said that can mean that some places will have extreme increases in precipitation, where in other places will see an extreme decrease. That is already being seen here in Iowa. In 2020 there were floods, and in 2021 there is a drought.

Going back further, in 1973 climate scientists almost perfectly predicted the increase in overall global temperature by the year 2000. They were only off by about 0.4ºC. This same model did overestimate the amount of carbon concentration however.

Climate scientists have been studying and adjusting their predictions for decades, and so far their predictions are fairly accurate. This makes climate projections happening right now seem more likely to be true.

You may prefer to stick your head in the sand and embrace denialism, but those of us...including over 200 scientific organizations previously cited for you... live in reality.

I want them to pay their fair share which is not how much in taxes they pay but what percentage of their income they pay in taxes. There are so many loopholes in the tax laws that favor the wealthy.

Right...the old 'trickle down' theory that has been proved false time and time again. Yes, they spend billions on all those things, but they make billions in profits with their executives making very, very high salaries. Studies have shown the rich have gotten richer and the disparity between their salaries increases and what the middle and lower classes make is getting bigger, too. So cry me a river about the poor wealthy and corporations.

I suggest you lay off the Right-wing Kool-Aid and try a large, cool glass of reality.

Perhaps your real question should be, "Why isn't Manchin a radical liberal Democrat like most of the other Senate Democrats?"

What? No "socialistcommie" in front of "radical liberal"? You're slipping.

Who ******* cares about this? I will be dead and gone without seeing significant quality of life impacts. That is all I care about. The rest of the world can deal with it on their time. Also, aren't there already like 100 climate change threads to address this?

I moved to Portland 32 years ago. We had snow every winter for the first few years. Now? If we get a few flurries and a dusting once, we're excited.
Same here with the days over 90 as you. A few in August but mostly 70's and 80's. Now? "In the 2010s, Portland had 169 days at 90 or above, more than any other decade on record."

I guess some of us don't hate facts.

Consistency is one of your strong points.

Thank you. You did not exactly present a valid retort, but I'll take what I can get around here.

Your post confirming once again that you don't care about anything that doesn't directly affect you got the retort it deserved.

Natural gas, a borderline energy source as far as emissions go (less than from coal) supported by Manchin and probably by Biden.
The plan directs agencies to take the necessary actions to complete the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which would be capable of transporting two billion cubic feet of natural gas a day from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations. The pipeline would move natural gas through Wetzel, Harrison, Doddridge, Lewis, Braxton, Webster, Nicholas, Fayette, Greenbrier, Summers and Monroe counties.

Manchin’s office states the pipeline is 94% completed, but the project has been hampered by court battles and legal issues. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is currently presiding over the matter; the provisions would put all further litigation before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Manchin is a long-time supporter of the Mountain Valley Pipeline; he joined Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Reps. David McKinley, R-W.Va., and Carol Miller, R-W.Va., on a July 20 letter asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to support the project’s completion and approve a four-year permit extension.

Manchin told reporters last week that the pipeline should “be at the top of the heap” of the nation’s energy projects.

Biden and congressional leaders have committed to passing permitting legislation before the current fiscal year ends Sept. 30.

Manchin is a key vote for Democrats in the split Senate; he has rejected larger domestic policy bills over the last year, citing concerns about the national debt and inflation. Manchin told reporters Monday he will speak to fellow Democrat Kyrsten Sinema about the Inflation Reduction Act in an attempt to win her support.
