The Russian Invasion of the Ukraine.

Reuters reports that Lukashenko offers to host talks between Russia and Ukraine in Minsk.

Texas speaks (mostly) English, while Mexico speaks Spanish, so I don't see Texas trying to join Mexico.
...

30% of Texans speak Spanish in their homes. No doubt there are swaths of Texas where it is the majority language.
No doubt the US-Americans have been committing atrocity and all-out genocide against the good Mexicans of Texas for years and years, so an invasion a peace-keeping mission to demilitarize and denazify Southern Texas is in order. I mean, who is against denazification, eh?

Of course once the Mexicans in Spanish-speaking majority communities are liberated, we'll have to deal with the most difficult situation of the minority Mexicans in the rest of Texas, which will, no doubt, face increasing suppression by the Texas nazis. So let's take out the air forces in Oklahoma, California, Colorado etc and liberate all of Texas. Oh, and look - Arizona, Southern Cali... All in need of urgent denazification!

On a not very significant note:

I'm keeping odd hours these days, so at 3 am I found myself in Planet Fitness watching CNN. It was mid morning, I think 10:00 am in Kyiv.

After about 30 minutes of walking a treadmill and watching the news, which was live with breaking news, wall to wall coverage, something struck me. They only had one reporter go live from Ukraine. They have very little footage. They were very slow getting new out. It was unclear what was happening. There had been some explosions. There was one picture of Russian vehicles crossing from Belarus.

They hardly had anyone on the ground, and they were dealing mostly in rumor and speculation.

CNN's budget ain't what it used to be. I understand that a Russian invasion of Ukraine isn't exactly as big as a US invasion of Iraq, but the coverage was really weak. Even their one guy in Lviv didn't really have any breaking information. He was basically acting like a talking head, but live from Ukraine.

That's a real shame. The absence of live journalism really drove home what was lacking.

Quite.

It really feels like the last few years, anything involving russia has come down to "I know you know, and I know you know I know, what are you going to do about it?" trolling of epic proportions.

russia invades and annexes Crimea, holds a laughable fixed referendum, handily leaks the actual result, and sits back and watches the West do nothing. Hell, we even rewarded them by letting them stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

russia runs a state-level doping program, and nothing happens. Sure, they're banned from the Olympics, but gets to compete anyway, with everyone calling them russia to boot. One of their athletes is caught doping, they shrug and offers up outrageous excuses ("Granddad's medicine"), and to wit the competitor is allowed to continue anyway, because reasons.

Hell, just today, everyone is nodding and pointing out (myself included), that putin clearly recorded his invasion statement days ago, not even bothering to change out his tie or fix the metadata, when the russian military and securityh services run some of the most sophisticated cybercrime units, and could easily have fixed it if they wanted to.

Money>Morals

Yes, budgets have been cut and also journalists have been warned by their "home" countries to get out of Ukraine.

There's also the fact that "citizen journalists" can provide the kind of live coverage that news teams used to supply and have the advantage of being spread over the whole country and not in just one or two spots.

Ukraine is also enormous so having a reporter on the spot is a real challenge. It's different than if journalists are embedded in Western forces.

Block all their money, confiscate their properties. Hit the ones propping up Putin in their wallet as much as possible. It's clear Putin does not care about what happens to the Russian people at all.

That won't happen, Boris and the Tories are in Putin's pocket. London relies on Russian money.

This war and suffering could have easily been avoided if Biden Admin/NATO had simply acknowledged Russia’s legitimate security concerns regarding Ukraine’s becoming a member of NATO, which would mean US/NATO forces right on Russia’s border

And then Poland.
As an historian friend of mine posits.
Sounds far fetched but at 69 Putin is running the clock.

As Poland is a member of NATO I doubt Putin has plans to attack there. That would invoke the musketeer clause in the NATO treaty triggering all-out war.

Someone should inform this stupid bitch that NATO is already "right on Russia's border".

And Russia is on NATO's border! What a provocation! They need to evacuate the Kola Peninsula immediately!

Fun fact: Russia’s belligerence and aggression is helping move Sweden towards NATO membership. Of course, to a certain degree, this is useful for Putin as it helps support the notion that Russia is being surrounded by hostile forces.

Yet this clearly opposite of his stated motives: if he genuinely didn't want to see a defensive alliance against his country he shouldn't threaten his neighbors in the first place.

It would be wrong to deny the ordinary people the opportunity to be part of such a worldwide sport, allowing this to go ahead can help build bridges with Russia and help foster goodwill....

Just wait until UEFA/FIFA find out that the cheques from the various oligarchs aren't going to clear any time soon. That'll spur them into action.

ETA: Apparently that happened a lot quicker than I expected.

Russia has been doing this sort of thing to neighboring countries for some 20 years. The Georgia operation took 12 days
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Georgian_War

and left two hunks of the country neutralized. Russia pulled out and left two puppet "nations"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Georgian_War#Russian_withdrawal

On 9 September 2008, Russia announced that Russian forces in South Ossetia and Abkhazia would remain under bilateral agreements with their respective de facto governments. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that a Russian deployment in Abkhazia and South Ossetia would prove decisive in preventing Georgia from recovering territories.[4] Georgia considers Abkhazia and South Ossetia Russian-occupied territories.[263] In November 2011, the European Parliament passed a resolution acknowledging Abkhazia and South Ossetia as occupied Georgian territories.

But what exactly are we supposed to do? Declare war on a country with the nuclear capability to lay waste to the planet?

Make it personal for Putin and his friends. There was enough information in the Panama papers to make it clear that he had been putting money in banks outside Russia. Go after any assets they have. Either confiscate them or make them disappear.

Any travel to a country not allied with Russia should get those officials detained.

Cut off communications and get real about restricting anything going into Russia that isn't food. That one will be a problem since China just doesn't care.
