Texas bans abortion.

"You can force my sister to give birth to a rape baby, you can take away my right to vote, but y'aint takin my guns! Might need 'em if the government ever gets out of control!"

I don't even have words. Reading the news is a daily traumatic experience, and I'm not kidding. If this quick downward turn happened in a movie 7 years ago it'd be totally unbelievable.

What pisses me off to no end is that the bill targets everyone but the pregnant person. It's such paternalistic crap that you obviously can't think straight if you pregnant, and at the same time such an obvious ploy not to alienate half of the voters.
If they had any conviction in their belief that abortion is murder, they would jail the prospective mother, just as Trump said, following the obvious logic and not the fake concern.

The following is an entry I found in a file of great quotes I have, which I use in posts from time to time. I cannot remember where I heard it, or read it, or who said it, but I thought it was very applicable to the subject of this Texas abortion law.

ON ANTI-ABORTION POLITICIANS
Cruelty is the plan - cruelty and control over women. You can tell this is true by the number of "pro-lifers" that are also "anti-birth control".

• The more pregnant women who are forced to term against their will, the easier it is to inflict economic hardship on them.

• The more women who are forced into economic dependence, the fewer who will find a way to escape an abuser.

• The more women in poverty, the more control and domination there is over them.

• The more raped women who are denied the right to terminate, the more they will be inflicted with trauma and narrowed options, and the more they will themselves be collateral desperate dependants.

Anti-choice is the hard mechanics of misogyny.
Cruelty is the mathematics of control.

Or.... People don't want to sit back while babies are being killed.

Your brand of Progressive fundie nonsense is just as bad as Christian fundie nonsense.

"Abortion isn't about a woman's convenience! They're sacrificing those babies to their Lord Satan!" Extremists on both sides are ridiculous.

so I assume you never masturbate.
Otherwise, you are clearly a baby murderer.

That may well be one of the main things that it's sold as, but reasons like that are are not even remotely close to why it's been sold as that in the first place or the main reasons keeping it active. Very, very much like how QAnon has been sold as being about saving the children by and to many, even though it's actual effect is nigh directly the opposite of actually saving children.

Is your primary problem that the people contesting the law are progressive fundies? Exactly what, in the list you quoted, do you feel is not true. In fact, I feel that list perfectly reflects the attitudes of the key sponsors and supporters of the law.

Just to poke at this - I don't feel that that list perfectly reflects the situation, personally. It's more complicated than that and, for many of the politicians, much more based in cynical pandering and throwing red meat to the base. It's ever hard to tell how much of it they actually believe at this point, of course. For a number of those working more in the background, it's also more politically-based, but in other ways, some of which do align much more with that list. It may be worth adding that for those who have actually bought the propaganda, though, as those with more cynical intent intended, there are those who do believe that babies are being killed heartlessly, especially by those evil Democrats (nevermind that many of the same people who would add that especially are plenty happy to claim that Democrats are too compassionate and thus weak in other circumstances).

In an abortion, the person ordering the "killing" is the pregnant person - yet all of these laws don't target them, but the people enabling their decision.
It's like going after every contract killer but never their clients.

So that's evidence alone that no one truly believes that abortion is murder. It's all virtue signaling and opportunism.

Of course, I admit it is a lot more complicated. However, the fact is that a lot of the more regressive laws, particularly concerning women's health and more precisely women's reproductive health has a very strong patriarchal agenda that governs decisions. And this is not something that only the Conservatives are guilty of. During Obama's tenure there was a meeting on reproductive health attended entirely by male delegates and even among them many were from the clergy with just two or three doctors. The problem is that the conservatives are just more egregious in trying to exercise control on the owman's body and mind.

But the women are being punished. I think the only reason why the law does not overtly target the woman is because putting them in jail would mean the state would have to fend for the child. In their eyes, the real punishment is the woman having to bring up an unwanted child ruining both the child's and the woman's life. The one person getting off scot free here, is the absent father.

so the appropriate punishment for ordering the killing of another human being, in their eyes, is that that human being lives?
It's just not possible to take them seriously.

We are talking about repugnicans here. Having to take care of a child while the mom is in prison would involve....gasp...COMMUNISM.

But they are fine if the result of an unwanted pregnancy is put up for adoption.

What have a Massachusetts Church, a bar in Winthrop St, Cambridge MA, the Texas Abortion Law, and the Supreme Court have in common?

Well, if you have 5½ minutes spare, let Rachel Maddow explain it to you

What I think Biden could do to fight the Texas Ban is to open Military Hospitals to women seeking abortions according to the Roe v. Wade rules, everywhere in the US.
Of course, a Republican President would undo this again.

Tell you what we'll use a compromise the Right can appreciate.

Fetuses are 3/5th of a person.

My wife just raised an interesting point…. Can the woman start demanding child support on detection of that “heartbeat”?
