Ed India going down the Dictatorship road fast...

I can't imagine quacks like this guy is doing much good either:
BBC: The rise of India's 'Covid quack'

A charismatic anti-vaccination campaigner has gained popularity by claiming that medical science's approach to the pandemic is entirely wrong. But critics say Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury is endangering lives by falsely claiming he can cure Covid-19 through diet alone, report Ed Main and Reha Kansara.

Biswaroop Roy Chowdhury is not one to hold back.

"According to me, most deaths are not because of coronavirus itself but because of its treatment," he says in one video on his website.

The Indian social media star - or former social media star, now that he's banned on several platforms - asserts that conventional medicine is a conspiracy designed to line the pockets of doctors and big business.

Since their defeat in the polls, the BJP's party workers and leaders have been working overtime trying to instigate violence, particularly in their largest field of defeat, West Bengal. Various BJP leaders have been tweeting outright false stories of a massive forced exodus of Hindus in Bengal and even genocide.
While there is violence mainly between party workers, there is absolutely no targeted violence against Hindus. Meanwhile in the southern state of Karnataka, the only BJP state in the south, a party leader has been tweeting incendiary anti-muslim tweets to divert attention from the massive spike in COVID cases because of their incompetence. Earlier this year they had sealed the borders to "commie" Kerala stating the large number of COVID cases primarily because Kerala has been dutifully monitoring the situation and been transparent with reporting.
Now two things have happened...Kerala has become the major supplier of Oxygen and Karnataka's actual homegrown COVID numbers have been revealed as their health systems slowly buckle under the brunt. Borders magically open again.

By the way, on the Russian vaccine, it seems there was a misunderstanding about it being ineffective and/or containing live adenovirus.

They also talk about the situation in India in the second (or third ) question.

The bottom line, by the way, for many virologists is that "variants" is a major red herring. The problem in India (and elsewhere) is NOT THE VARIANTS, it is the failure to take proper precautions, and as Susheel rightly points out (and which the people on this podcast agree), it is the mass political and religious gatherings that have led to the spread.

....also inability to access primary health care for poorer families.

I don't know, that didn't happen in Russia or China.

It didn't exactly happen in Japan either. Japan went from feudal backwater in 1868 to world power by 1905, and they made damn sure they were as jingoistic as they could possibly be, right up until 1945.

A little off-topic, but I've always been impressed with the turnabout they had after the war. Either the Americans did a fantastic job rebuilding the country or the Japanese were just ready to join the modern world at that time; or both.

I think there were a number of factors:

Japan had had experience with democratic ideals prior to the war, they had people who knew what they were doing, they also benefited from the US occupation in many ways, and perhaps the simultaneous renunciation of war, while being a miliary outpost for the US during the Korean and Vietnam wars helped Japan enormously.

There is a historian called John W Dower who wrote quite a lot of interesting stuff about Japan's post-war history.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has been arresting anyone critical of the administration's handling of the Pandemic. So much so, that police charges are being filed against desperate people enquiring about hospital bed/oxygen/Remdesivir availability on social media.
COVID-19: FIR Against UP Villagers Who Complained of Poor Medical Facilities to Media
Then there is this:
Arrested for anti-PM posters: daily wagers, printer, auto driver
Which resulted in the opposition parties pasting copies of the same poster on their compound walls or on social media.
Again in the **** hole called Uttar Pradesh, a journalist critical of the government's pandemic performance was attacked by pro-government goons after which, an FIR was filed against the journalist for "instigating violence and sedition":
UP journalist says attacked at behest of SDM, BJP MLA; counter FIRs filed

Yeah, I'd seen some of those stories.

Being arrested for criticising the gov't is a new low.

Quite funny how China and India are on the same path.

Interesting happenings in India:

1. Local godman and quack science entrepreneur, Baba Ramdev, founder of major food/hygeine/health products brand Patanjali has just apologized publically for his statements against allopathic medicine and creating panic about the vaccines. This was supposedly after a letter from the Indian Medical Association and the Health minister chastising him for his remarks. Funnily enough, the health minister (himself a doctor) had only a few months ago actively worked to promote some quack concoction called Coronil developed by Patanjali as an effective COVID19 cure. The IMA too at various times in the recent past has had Baba Ramdev as guest speaker at various events.

2. BJP MP Pragya Thakur is a key accused in the Malegaon Blasts of 2006, originally thought to have been perpetrated by Islamic radicals, but later found out to have actually been carried out by extremist Hindu groups. She was in jail when the BJP came to power and was released on bail supposedly for "health reasons", after which she immediatley stood for elections on a BJP ticket and won.

A week ago she claimed that she would never get COVID because she regularly drank cow pee. On Saturday, she complained of breathing problems and was airlifted to hospiral.
