The behaviour of US police officers

Yeah, this guy was in a no win situation. Hands out the window, but undo your seatbelt and get out of the car? The second he put his hands down to unlatch the belt he would have been shot and the officers would have claimed that his legal handgun in the vehicle was sufficient prrof that they were in mortal peril. I think the Lt. did the best he could in the face of an overly aggressive cop.

Again this has been the game from both cops and their apologists for a while now.

Scream two things that it's impossible to both do, then blame (or spend 40 pages writing fan fiction about it on the internet), why what the black person should have done was the opposite of whatever they didn't do.

Move? You should have stood still.
Stay still. You should have moved.
Move too fast? You should have moved slower.
Move too slow? You should have moved faster.
Speak up but don't talk back.
Don't move but get on your knees.
Don't move but get back.

Boston PD hid for decades that head of police union was a serial child molester.

For years, the Boston Police kept a secret: the union president was an alleged child molester
Despite 1995 evidence, Patrick Rose kept his badge, worked on child sexual assault cases, and ascended to power in the police union. He went on to allegedly molest five other children.

My best friend is a Seattle Police officer. He use to be a police officer across Lake Washington in Kirkland. When he was there, he responded to the murder (accidental killing) of a woman by her husband who also happened to be an ex Kirkland Police officer.

This ex officer had a few domestic violence calls against him. Apparently he would point his gun at his wife and pull the trigger and the gun was not loaded. He was never arrested for this. But then the wife ended up dead. Wasn't charged for this either. Also kept his pension.

All available evidence indicates that the police are prolific domestic abusers. I would not anyone I care about to be married to or dating a cop.

Tear gas has been fired and a curfew imposed amid angry protests after police fatally shot a black man in a traffic stop in the US city of Brooklyn Center, just north of Minneapolis.

The man has been identified by relatives as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

Brooklyn Center's mayor issued a city-wide curfew until 06:00 (11:00 GMT), telling people to "be safe, go home".

Tensions in Minneapolis are high as the trial of the former officer accused of killing George Floyd takes place.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he was "closely monitoring the situation" and praying for Mr Wright's family.

Hundreds of protesters chanting Daunte Wright's name gathered late on Sunday outside the police headquarters in Brooklyn Center, just a few kilometres north of central Minneapolis.

Tensions rose as police donned riot gear, and two police vehicles were pelted with stones and jumped on, Reuters news agency reported.

Protesters wrote chalk on pavements and lit candles, but police later ordered the protesters to disperse, with footage showing tear gas and stun grenades being fired by officers.

Highly trained professionals

“Don’t run from me boy, I will beat your ass right here,” the deputy said. “Turn around and put your hands behind your back before I beat the **** out of you. Don’t be ******* stupid!”

A Texas deputy is on desk duty after video surfaced of him punching a teenager outside a convenience store.

In trouble for saying the quiet part loud. Everyone knows cops use violence as a punitive measure rather than as minimally as possible to do their jobs, but they're not supposed to outright admit it.

Quibble - Much more likely than average to be domestic abusers. That doesn't mean that it's actually particularly likely that any specific cop is a domestic abuser in an absolute sense, though.

People who keep parroting the "if you just comply" line willfully ignore this complication. Comply with which one? Two men with guns in your face simultaneously yelling contradictory instructions at you.

Is that intentional? I would think they would designate one officer to shout orders to make sure this didn't happen, unless the confusion is deliberate.

Sure, more likely than average. Also much more likely than average for their victims to have a lot of trouble getting relief via the criminal justice system against their abusers, because local cops are likely going to try to sweep any allegations under the rug.

What like only 40% of cops beat their partners? Clearly a far cry from a majority.

Two people psyching themselves up because they've been trained to view everyone else as a potentially-lethal threat? Possibly also drunk on power.

LEO's are also bad about claiming that they issued instructions when they didn't.

In one of the most recent cases, the Army Officer pulled over in Virginia, the police stated they told the man in question to get out of the car or be peppered sprayed, but their own bodycam footage shows nothing of the short.

I think LEOs often rewrite the narrative in their own head after high stress incidents. (Or just straight up intentionally lie.)

That's not necessarily accurate. There's a couple things to note in relation to that number, in short. 1) The numbers referenced are from the early 90's and 2) produced by an activist group on the subject, with the added complication that 3) reporting violence by police spouse to the spouse's friends in the police is a significant deterrent to actually reporting, which makes any numbers much more questionable.

Though they did tell him that he was "fixin' to ride the lightning" so I guess that's something. Oh.. wait..

I notice, however, that the officer in question has been fired, with a pretty profuse apology from the town.

I was impressed with the video quality of the bodycam footage. I expect the cops will have to do some agitating to downgrade it.

Police press conference on Daunte Wright shooting

Video shows police attempting to arrest Daunte Wright, at one point, he jumped back into the car. Female officer yells
"Taser, taser, taser, oh ****, I just shot him."

Police spokesman Gannon
"This was an accidental discharge that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Wright,"

The officer is currently on administrative leave, Gannon says.

"I have limited information. I'm not trying to be disingenuous, I wish the BCA could be here," Gannon says.

Gannon says the officer is afforded due process just like everyone else. "She will not be returning to duty until the investigation has run its course," he says. But he adds it is possible she might not return to work at all.

"She's a very senior officer," Gannon says, adding that's the best he can do right now.
