At a public hearing on Wednesday, representatives from two conservative groups said they were worried it could lead to the promotion of Hinduism or guided meditation practices. The bill did not advance in the Alabama Senate Judiciary Committee.

Once more Conservatives show that they have no trouble in violating the First Amendment when it suits them.

There is no First Amendment protection for instruction in public schools. Quite the opposite. Of all the possible rational and informed objections you could raise, you chose one that isn't.

2. The people in Alabama who want Yoga in schools seem to understand that too which is why they're attempting compromises like "okay, but what if no chanting?"

Fine, if Alabama also forbids specifically Christian teaching in schools.
IMHO it's all nonsense that should not be supported by the taxpayers;but if you allow one you have to allow them all.

If it is "opt-in" and done outside lesson time, like luchtime or after school, then it is a bit stupid.

If it isn't then I agree with the people blocking it.

This to me is like banning the use of “Goodbye” because of its religious origins.

I know lots of people who do yoga and I don’t think a single one is Hindu, I could understand that if it was taught as a religious subject rather than in PE folk could find something to object to, but as a series of exercises it seems quite removed these days from its religious origins.

May have just missed it, but I still haven't seen whether it is within teaching time.

If it is then I agree lose it, like "Christianity"

Last I knew it is one of those touchy feely breathing, "be at one with your body and the "spirit of the universe" load of bollocks things.

I've done Yoga. The spiritual stuff was mostly flavour, but I guess that depends on the people involved. One thing I'm certain off is that it won't turn anyone Hindu.
