Cancel culture IRL

You are making an assertion based upon a tweet which talks about putting on a second mask.
Please detail exactly how this is making for wearing a mask?

The tweet doesn’t say anything about wearing a second mask. It’s also not the first and only thing she posted minimizing the efficacy of wearing masks during a deadly pandemic.

Carano’s history of posting inflammatory and objectionable things is a matter of public record. No one has to prove to you or anyone else that’s it’s inflammatory or objectionable. There is no objective, agreed-upon standard that needs to be met. Disney found it inflammatory and objectionable enough to no longer want it associated with their brand, and that’s the only standard that matters here.

The burden lies entirely on anyone claiming that Disney is in the wrong.

The “cancel culture” critics don’t have a legal, ethical, or moral leg to stand on here. It’s why they don’t make an actual argument and try so desperately to keep the discussion as nebulous as possible. It’s all just an evasion technique to avoid admitting that they can’t articulate specifically what it is that Disney did wrong.

Instead, all we get are lies and bad faith arguments, and in this case, tacit support of dangerous anti-science propaganda.

Ask the people decrying cancel culture what they think about the Dixie Chicks and Jane Fonda. And if they're very old ask about Ingrid Bergman. I bet you'll find they were fine with cancellation on those people.

My understanding is that those things happened a long time ago before any of us were alive and so they don’t count. Or something.

Fair examples. The Dixie Chicks got blasted by a lot of their audience, then continued performing, even Dropping the "Dixie" off their name. Still Grammy nommed and stuff. Jane Fonda did Very Bad Things, posing with North Veitman troops and all. She since dialed back and apologised, and went on to a successful career. Neither was Cancelled.

Apply that same standard to Gina Carano, Nick Sandmann, and everyone else brought up in this thread

Correct, the images linked with the tweet show Democratic Reps wearing a mask over their eyes along with an accusation that they want us to wear blindfolds, along with masks.
to avoid seeing what is going on, apparently.

Had she retweeted an ostrich with its head in the sand, she undoubtedly would have been making light of everyone who has died of coronavirus and been buried. Once the ideology is declared heresy, the accusations can be as hyperbolic as one wishes.

Once again, you seem to be under the impression that Gina Carano is entitled to her job, and to have her contract renewed.

The thing that was worrying about Gina Carano, is that a lot of the pressure to cancel her came about just because she was unapologetically proud of her political affiliation, and other people of the opposite party did not agree and put pressure to remove her.

I don't think the content of her posts were enough to remove her, but the financial impact of the mob wanting her to be cancelled was.

I have read a number of Gina's posts, and while I did not agree with them, I certainly did not think they were worthy of being fired over.

Cancel culture has been so overused that it is at risk of not being taken seriously anymore. Instead of being a serious tool for extreme circumstances, it has become the weapon of the thought police to repress opposing viewpoints.

According to some reports, she was warned to tone things down a couple times. She did not, and Disney decided not to renew her contract. Perhaps she shouldn't have compared being conservative with being a Jew in Nazi Germany.

Why did conservatives not speak out against 'Cancel Culture' when it was Colin Kaepernick being canceled? Or the Dixie Chicks?

.

But why do you see that as a problem?

Once again, you pivot. First you call it “cancel culture”, then you call it an attempt at “cancel culture” (which you wanted to still count as “cancel culture”), and now you’re back to just calling it “cancel culture” because now as many as six people said mean things on Twitter.

“Cancel culture” is whatever you need it to be in the moment you need it.

The content of her posts caused the financial pressure. And while you may not agree that they were worthy of her being fired, enough other people did to cause sufficient financial pressure to exert change.

Just more bad faith arguments because you can’t make a legitimate one.

Let me know when you figure out what Disney did wrong.

The above post is based on fabrication and baseless paranoia.

Par for course for the anti-“cancel culture” crowd who need to manufacture something sinister or threatening to grant their paper-thin arguments the veneer of legitimacy.

Also when was it ever a serious tool for extreme situations? It’s just people complaining

There’s not really evidence that this is the case.

The evidence available indicates Disney came to this decision on their own.

A phenomenon that routinely gets ignored by businesses.

It has yet to be explained what the secret formula is to coerce a business to submit to your will.

I mean, consumer opinion was definitely a factor. Amongst other things.

To me, if we’re trying to analyze it what she said is bad enough or what actions Disney should have taken, you’re going to get a different answer from everyone you ask. But that’s kind of the point, she said what she said and the public weighed in and Disney made their business decisions.

Everyone who wanted to spoke their mind. That’s how it’s supposed to work. And like Thermal was hinting at, she got another job shortly after, did a few interviews to elaborate her position on the topic, so she wasn’t really cancelled anyway.

Cancel culture, once again, is when people make an effort to publicly shame and sanction an individual or group. You are free to deny that this happened to Kroger & Andy if you so choose, but I doubt you'll convince anyone who actually saw what went down.

ETA: You are also free, of course, to provide an alternative definition to try to scope what we're talking about here. (I do not expect this to happen.)

Your definition doesn’t say anything about merely “making an effort”.

It’s your claim. It’s up to you to define your terms and remain consistent to those terms.

Unfortunately, you’re failing miserably at that so far.
