Rush Limbaugh checks out at 70...

He made a career out of celebrating the deaths of others, what better way to honor him than celebrate his death?

The reason people have given for doing it is that he was such a horrible person because he did it.
Thanks. That at least explains where you see hypocrisy. But do you feel killing in self defense is hypocritical for people who think murder is wrong?

I feel its wrong to celebrate the death of others, but think that a person who has done that deserves to have their death celebrated because of another principle I hold: justice. This comes in to play in lots of places. I think it's OK to kill in self defense. I think it's just to kill someone for murder (but for others reasons I'm still generally opposed to the death penalty). I think it's wrong to steal, but think it's perfectly fine to take things from a thief as punishment.

There is a difference between still criticising someone who has died, which I agree with, and celebrating their death.

I do not think that is true of a public figure who has not only promulgated bad ideas over a long time, but gladly identified himself with them. He was proud that he had a cult following.

Sure, it's seemly not to speak ill of the dead, but Limbaugh's influence was deep and wide, and enduring, and he was responsible for it. There are plenty of egregious public figures we can feel comfortable in criticizing long after their deaths, and while Limbaugh does not get into the top tier with the worst tyrants, he deserves membership in the group.

I feel no compunction at all about being glad he's dead. I'd have preferred if he had recanted or apologized before he went, but that's too much to hope for, so I'll have to be satisfied to know that he's finally at least shut up, and to hope that at least a few dittoheads, leaderless, will find themselves having to do some actual thinking.

e.t.a. I'm not sure I follow the reasoning in the explanation given by Cullen on this. The evidence for what kind of person you are comes from what you're seen to do. You are what you do. The reason for doing what you're seen to do is likely the kind of person you are. Nice people don't act consistently rotten. I think one might be mixing up the cause and effect of Limbaugh's action, and the cause and effect of our judgment of it.

Limbaugh celebrated the death of people with HIV.

Being gleeful about his death not nearly evens the score, but it's all we can do.

Yeah, he wasn't exactly polite on that sort of thing.

I doubt that anyone singing his praises yesterday said, "We have just been notified that Rush Limbaugh has achieved room temperature."

He just died? Huh, I would’ve sworn I saw his face and body melting away, lost-Ark-of-the-Covenant style, when Melanie draped the Presidential Medal of Freedom around his neck last year.

Memories. Fantasies. Who can tell them apart sometimes?

It is times like these that the left show their true levels of hypocrisy.

So stupid.

Rush Limbaugh was despised not for celebrating the deaths of reactionary racists, homophobes and all-round pieces of human excrement, but for, well...being a reactionary racist, homophobe and all-round piece of human excrement.

Besides, if you had a ranking of all the bad things that it is possible to be, then being reactionary racists, homophobes and all-round pieces of human excrement ranks way higher than merely being a hypocrite. "Oh sorry, did I say you should mind your table manners and here I am with my elbows on the table. I suppose that makes me a hypocrite!"

I have to admit that Rush was the reason I became interested in politics. Over 25 years ago. Discovered him while driving a truck for work that had an am radio. Maybe it was his delivery, I don't remember. I'd listen to Howard Stern after, or before I forget.

Haven't listened to him since then really. Even if I listen to conservative radio (so rare) I skip him. He became annoying to me long ago.

I also don't think he was always sincere. I listened to him again a few years ago driving somewhere and I remember thinking more than once, "No way does he believe what he's saying now, he must have his tongue in his cheek" Maybe not though.

No matter how bad the Republicans acted he always always had an excuse for them, and he was very good at it. I do think he was intelligent. I didn't agree with him but he was no dummy.

He used to say long ago on his show, "Keep in mind folks, my primary job is to entertain you", then he'd go on about how his words shouldn't necessarily be taken too seriously (something like that).

I'm kinda just emotionless on this one. It's a bummer when people die, that's about all I can muster. Beyond that, adios!

Whenever I hear Alex Jones speak I wonder if he really believes the nonsense he spews. Then I realize that it is irrelevant. He's just a poison.

For reference, as a leftist, I have no issue with those that celebrate the death of unrepentant evil people like Limbaugh. Or, even if they reformed, but treated someone so poorly that they're happy to see them go, for that matter.

I'm not celebrating Limbaugh's death, since I rarely thought of him unless someone brought him to my attention, so why bother, but that's just me.

Some say, it is not right to dance on someone's grave. I say, the munchkins totally danced on the Wicked Witch's grave, and l love that part of the movie.

I always disagreed with this.

What you say makes him worse are his views and actions. I accept that there are people that will disagree with my views. Just as I accept that a sports team is trying to defeat the team I associate with. That doesn't make me hate them; it makes them adversaries. What they do as adversaries makes me hate them. Winning isnt one of them.

Politics and social norms aren't sports. They're not entertainment. People live and die and suffer based on the legislation passed and the cultural norms encouraged.

The comparison of politics to sports is a popular sentiment, you're not alone in it. It's also super gross and harmful.

I'm not comparing politics to sports. I'm comparing sports to values I hold. Real adversaries matter (not the pretend ones in sports) and have real consequences for me. But I don't hate my nemeses.
