How do pagans celebrate Christmas?

And you would do better to spend it on that 1 item than anything else you own! If I was on a desert island and could only have one thing with me, that Bible is the only thing I would really want!!

That shows you what an idiot you are. I'd want a shortwave solar powered radio to call for help so I can get off the island.

Some things are easier to handle on our own, and some are not. What will you feel like if and when your wife passes away because of these problems? Will you feel strong enough then? I think deep down you will ask yourself if you will ever see her again?

As a card-carrying agnostic, I have occasionally wondered if anything awaits us beyond this life. What the hey, it's a way to pass a few hours when there's nothing good on TV.

But then I remember that no one actually knows if life after death exists, so why worry about it? I studied Christianity long ago and came to the conclusion that any god who could sentence his creations to eternal torment didn't live up to my standards of morality and wasn't worthy of my worship. If your faith is right, then I agree with Lucifer - it's better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven. And until I wake up after death and discover whose philosophy (if any) was correct, I'm not going to sprain my brain worrying about it.

Well if we all got what we deserved as sinners.... forget it none of us are deserving of God's love. But he does love us. And suffering is what I believe He uses sometimes to show us our need for Him. This is just my opinion, but it definately seems to be where I find my peace. No one wants to suffer and die, but we all do. Some of us more than others. None of us really understands or likes that!

Do you not feed your kids so you can show them how much they need you? They may need that suffering to realize how much you love them.

And as far as my personal sufferings that is a whole other topic! Maybe I will go more in depth later when I can find some time. But I can tell you I understand pain and empathize with everyone who goes through it. Myself at this time I am fighting needing another surgery for a bad neck and after having much metal in my body already, I don't want another surgery. Three bad discs....oh well. It's all in God's hands so I know I will be fine. If I die on that operating table I will be in heaven with Jesus. That's a better place anyway!

Its not in God's hands. Its in your surgeon's hands, and those of the nurses who will care for you in recovery and the chemists who made the drugs to keep you under while someone slices into you, etc. And the numerous other scientists and doctors who experimented to find ways to attempt to address your issues.

If you believe that being in heaven with Jesus is the best place, why not stop having the surgeries? Also, if God gave you the suffering, why are you trying to alleviate it?

I probably spent it on a coupla Pratchett novels instead, which brought more joy to my life than Jebus ever did.

Kathy just makes me want to tell this parable.

Jesus walks into the inn. The innkeeper says that there is no vacancy. So, Jesus reaches into his pocket, pulls out three nails and says " well, can you just put me up for the night?"

That's right, Tricky. In fact, Kathy.. Why wait? Why not go to that better place ASAP?

Sigh. Can't we all just get along? After all, it's Walrustide. Let's all gather around the traditional sphere of chickenwire, decorated with plastic scorpions, and join together in the blissful harmonious refraining from murder that characterizes this holy Walrustide season. Then St Walrus will bless us with apathy and pancake batter, and people of every race and creed can celebrate the simple joy of not yet being murdered.

Because of a technicality. Christians gotta do God's will, so that means they can't take their own lives. But certainly they could pray to be taken, and if the next place is better, I can't understand why Christians aren't praying for that all the time.

Because being BRAVE and COURAGEUS is what the evangelicals call prosletyzing! They could take the easy road to heaven, but they must BRAVELY PREACH!!!!

BRAVE! LIKE SIR LANCELOT for spreading the word of Christ throughout the land!!!

Enter kurious kathy, the not quite as brave as Sir Lanelot Chrsitian, who had nearly fought the Dragon of Agnor, who had nearly stood up to the vicious Chicken of Bristol, and who had personally wet herself at the Batlle of JREF Forums!

And that's how the score comes out in favor of rationality.

(I bet kathy's made of wood. anyone have a duck?)

What if they didn't take their own lives, but just did really stupid things that get them killed.. like join the marines to get to the frontline and then run like a monkey at the enemy?

Fowl,
Looking for this?

Ballad of Kurious Kathy
(with many apologies to Eric Idle)

Bravely bold Kur’ Kathy rode forth from Church parking lot.
She was not afraid to die,
O brave Kur’ Kathy.
She was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Kur’ Kathy!

She was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have her eyes gouged out and her elbows broken,
To have her kneecaps split and her body burned away
And her limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Kur’ Kathy!

Her head smashed in and her heart cut out
And her liver removed and her bowels unplugged
And her nostrils raped and her bottom burned off
And her vag….

She thinks there's a war on Christians? We'll give her one. Let's consult with Brother Maynard, and the Book of Armaments:

And St Antioch raised the hand-grenade up on high saying "O Lord bless this thy hand-grenade, that with it thou mayest blow thy enemies to tine bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and achovies and orangutans and breakfast ceals and fruit bats...

...And the Lord spake saying "First shall thou take out the holy pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shall thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy hand-grenade of Antioch towards thy foe who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

You know, Kathy, I could wish you could meet a genuine, loving Christian. Then, maybe, just maybe, you'd realize just how nasty you're sounding, and what an embarassment you are to the real Christians on this board. Your actions, your continued preaching, as opposed to discussion, which is what this board is supposed to be about, demonstrates why so many have packed up and left the Church.

I read your posts, and I think about what my wife might say to this. Your hate, masked with sugary verbage, is the very thing Peggy had to endure growing up, that she had to endure as she went through a marriage with a guy who tomcatted around on her, who then turned out to be a con artist with some very dangerous people looking for him, and then wound up ostracized because she was a *gasp!* fallen woman, a divorcee. Then, she wound up married to me, and because we didn't make huge amounts of money, we found ourselves perpetually on the outside of nearly every church we attended.

We don't attend Church anymore. Peggy reads her Bible, hangs out with Christian friends, and opens her arms and heart to just about anyone she meets. Most people may disagree with her, but nearly everyone who meets her thinks she's one of the sweetest human beings they've ever met.

She prays actively, Kathy, for Fowl that he might be healed, for Tricky that he has some peace, (probably not necessary), for nearly everyone I tell her about on this board. I don't mention it, simply because that's what Peggy does. She doesn't need to preach; she chooses to try to model what she believes is a Christian woman's duty and honor. If she fails, she admits it. If she makes a mistake, the confesses it. And she has yet to ever point a finger at anyone here and make the kind of nasty accusations you do.

What people like you fail to comprehend is that every time you pull this garbage, you raise the stakes in the game. Where once I could accept beyond reasonable doubt, after hearing fiends like Fred Phelps, Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Falwell, Ralph Reed, Pat Robertson, and their ilk, I'm forced to look towards beyond any doubt. If you are truly led of the Holy Spirit, why the hatred? Why can't you answer questions honestly, and deal with people as people, instead of acting as though you're looking for another head to add to your belt? In truth, you're actions are an embarassment to my wife, whom I love dearly, and have for over 20 years. How dare you.

Just a suggestion: Why don't you look towards some of the other Christian women here on the board, and see why, even though we disagree with them, we still respect them. You just might learn something about real faith, and why that's something considered admirable on a Skeptic's forum.

And suffering is what I believe He uses sometimes to show us our need for Him

14 years of agonizing pain and near hemorrhagic bleeding.
14 years of constant prayer for relief.
Surgery stopped the pain and fixed the problem.

10 years of rotting teeth from living in an EPA superfund site.
10 years of screaming prayers to please stop the pain!
One hour in a dentist's chair....pain gone. Teeth gone, too, but oh well.

4 years of horrible pain while walking, climbing stairs, bike riding (as sole means of transportation.)
No prayer, just saving money to afford corticosteroid injections in each trochanteric bursa. $300 later...no pain.

28 years of suffering, praying, and living right.

Atheism was the natural and obvious choice.

Perhaps if Christians were willing to roll up their sleeves and do what they claim Jesus commands, perhaps your pain might have been cured through medical attention a lot earlier. As it is, hospitals run by religious organizations are used to boost income to the denomination, not to heal those in need.

And the Church wonders why people leave...!

If you were brave you could meet a lot more pagans, the wierd thing is most of us come from religious families, and many cases were the religous ones to begin with.
Well Dancing David...I have known many worldly people in my day and all I found was most of them were ruled by there own sin. It's not worth it to go the way of the world. Nothing but death and destruction. And believe me I learned it the hard way! At least I learned, repented, and chose to go back to God! Everything outside of Christ leads to death!

I rejoice in life, and therefore I am unafraid of death.

I love those around me and take pleasure in life as it is. I turned my back of the CHURCH when I realized I was a pagan, jesus is still a close personal friend.

I despise the church for turning it's back on christ and rejoicing in fear and hatred.

Worldly means what, acting like Jerry Falwell and James Dubson?

They have turned thier backs on god and the teachings of jesus.

Some things are easier to handle on our own, and some are not. What will you feel like if and when your wife passes away because of these problems? Will you feel strong enough then? I think deep down you will ask yourself if you will ever see her again?

It is an unanswerable question (will we ever see departed loved ones). We cannot know the answer, we can only have beliefs as to the answer. This is the plain truth. Wanting to have a way to avoid or deal with suffering is no reason to accept obvious nonsense as truth just because it promises a happy ending for you.
