I imagine this will turn out to be the literal definition of 'better than nothing'.

At a Downing Street press conference, Boris Johnson said: "We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny."

The text of the agreement has yet to be released, but the PM claimed it was a "good deal for the whole of Europe".

That means it is a shower of ****.

Given Johnson's insistence on fishing, I wonder what he's sacrificing for the EU to make a token concession on those

Brexit deal done: Trade agreement finally struck between UK and EU
Sky News has been told MPs could be recalled on 30 December to approve the last-minute Brexit agreement.
Pretty much as expected, Britain capitulated on basically everything.
Now BoBo has to sell it as "victory"...

It's a minor concession, may well disappear over the next few years. In exchange BoBo has conceded practically everything else.

As I suggested before, the EU makes some concessions on fishing, Johnson gives in on everything else, and the Daily Mail etal. spend days with headlines about Britannia ruling the waves.

I take it this is just a deal to stop the UK leaving with no deal and further negotiations will take place? How long does this deal last for?

Forever.

Well, until Boris realises it's getting him bad headlines then he will break it.

So, the end of January.

I doubt its a coincidence its suddenly been agreed on Xmas eve, gives Boris a few days grace before anyone gets a good look at the details.

I think Michael Heseltine summed up my reaction to the news a deal had been agreed when he compared it to a condemned man finding out his death sentence has been commuted to life imprisonment.

It wouldn't surprise me if this gets blown up by the hard core brexiters in the UK government.
After all, it seem that the thing they really wanted, freedom from any and all EU regulations has now been replaced with, follow EU regulations but you get no say in how they are made.

Boris said “This European question’s been going on for decades. I think this gives us the platform, the foundation for a really prosperous new relationship.”

He said the deal delivered on the promise of a “giant free-trade zone” characterised by “regulatory competition. We have taken back control of laws and our destiny. We have taken back control of every jot and tittle of our regulation in a way that is complete and unfettered.”

He said the UK had won the right “set our own standards, to innovate in the way that we want. British laws will be made solely by the British parliament. Interpreted by British judges, sitting in the UK courts,”

He later tweeted the deal as “great tidings of great joy. The oven-ready deal was just the starter. This is the feast – full of fish, by the way. I believe it will be the basis of a happy and successful and stable partnership with our friends in the EU for years to come.”

Barrie Deas, head of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations said he is “bitterly disappointed” with what Johnson described as a “prodigious” increase in the amount of fish the UK could land.
A transition period of five-and-a-half years to phase in changes, with the UK accepting a 25% repatriation of quotas, amounted to “justice deferred, justice denied”, he said.

(bolding mine)

At first I thought you were joking.
But he really said this.

Incroyable ...

The spell checker in my browser suggests I replace "Incroyable" with "Incurable". I guess that would also work for Boris Johnson. Good luck, UK friends.
