I'm pretty sure you can't take bananas at all. Have none of these people ever crossed an international border? You can't take food with you.

The ******* bastards. First they wouldn't vote for us in Eurovision because of what we did to the Irish and now they couldn't wait to close all their airports at the drop of a hat. They hate us. Even Turkey has slammed the door in our faces.

Nobody loves us.

When will we ever get douze points in Eurovision Song Contest again. Only Ireland ever votes for us these days.

My issue with ending the transition period on Jan 1st is that we haven't ended the transition. We haven't even STARTED the transition. We still don't know what we are transitioning to. We aren't ready. Nowhere near.

My view - admittedly from very far away - is that if you haven't even STARTED (your emphasis) after a year of talks, then it's a fools errand to think the more talking will lead to different results.

That's the problem. Transition isn't about talking. It's about doing.

We used the transition period to negotiate what we are transitioning to. And failed.

Or, possibly...just possibly, the whole thing is a bloody stupid idea.

I guess for the UK to get thins, there have to be 2 conditions that have to be met.

1. A decent song, that doesn't take the Eurovision too seriously.
2. Acting as a grown-up in Europe.

It's almost like some (most?) Brexiteers don't actually know what they are talking about/don't know what they actually voted for/don't understand any of the processes involved.
Judging from the seagull-like eruptions of the sole Brexiteer in this thread that is entirely true.

Don't worry, Boris says "Prosper mightily remains an extremely good description of life after January 1, either way,"

Yep, what the leave campaign said was that we would negotiate our future deal, then invoke Article 50 and then use period that as the transition year when we would change over to the new deal. But of course doing that would have torn the Tory party apart so as ever for the Tories: party before country.

Actually, year zero isn't a bad description. For the quitter maniacs like Farage, we won't have "left" until we've attained a state of total isolationism with no agreements of any kind with the EU. Their demands have been mobile goalposts over the last 5 years. At first remaining in a free trade area was fine, but gradually the revulsion at the thought that any deal of any kind would mean we would have contractual obligations (shudder) to foreigners (double shudder) and disputes might be arbitrated by non-British authorities (uncountable shudders) means they just demand we pull up the drawbridges to attain some kind of foreigner-free nirvana.

I think we have to go through this period of dunderheaded self-destruction just so the faithful can absorb the reality that it's really, really not just going to work out fine for some magical reason.

^ But you know it will somehow be the fault of the likes of thee and me as we didn't believe, so we caused Tinkerbell to die. Or something.

But it'll still be our fault and it will be necessary to purge us (was watching Armando Ianucci's Death of Stalin last night).

The UK government has told the agricultural industry that the EU will allow almost all food and plant exports from Great Britain to continue after Brexit.

As a first step, the UK has to be awarded "third country" listed status to be allowed to export to the EU.

A Defra letter says the EU will confirm this legally on Monday, with effect from 1 January.

This will apply irrespective of a post-Brexit deal.

If no deal were struck taxes on imports both ways would apply too, while new red tape such as export heath certificates will be introduced.

"Third country listing" is essential to permit ongoing exports of, for example, Welsh lamb or live chicks.

Isn't it amazing that now that NI votes aren't needed that the so called unionist party of the UK I. e. the tories don't give a damn about NI.

Also I thought this was a temporary transition agreement that only ran until March?

I've occasionally bought wine from Laithwaites, so I'm on their email list. I just received their "Merry Christmas" one, this bit made me smile:

Brexit? Who knows? Do tell me if you do. We’ve got in as much wine as we can store, in case of port blockages. And we’re all keeping our fingers crossed. That’s all we can do. People ask, “What will it mean for wine?” And we have no answer. We just muddle hopefully on. But we do have wine.

So that's all right then. :D

Brexit deal done: Trade agreement finally struck between UK and EU
Sky News has been told MPs could be recalled on 30 December to approve the last-minute Brexit agreement.

UK ‘decided not to stay in Erasmus exchange programme’.
EU says British students will no longer be able to participate in the Erasmus exchange programme under the Brexit deal agreed by Boris Johnson.

Nope, they will just seamlessly transition into "what if things get even worse if we re-join the EU" mode. There is a fundamentalist right wing ideology driving this, and it's the same one that drove the US to elect Trump. Failure won't convince them it's a mistake and as soon as the last failure becomes normalized they will move onto the next one.
