However, loaded lorries arriving from Dover. Do the customs officials have the time and resources to worry about a poxy sandwich bought from Boots Chemists by the truck driver, when they will be overwhelmed with EORI, VAT, CE, and all kinds of other paperwork, together with random checks on the lorry loads (they don't have the resources even now to check all lorries, which is how illegal immigrants get through).

I think the EU is ready. I am more concerned about lorries arriving at Dover.

There are two types of people: those who honour the rules and regulations and those who try to flout them.

For the average commuter travelling abroad, your 'organic matter' in the suitcase will be picked up as you go through security and the security officers might ask you to show them what this object is (for example, it could be a slab of marijuana or it could be a piece of ham).

They will be ready and have the time, they can hold the lorries for checking for as long as they need.
Lorries leaving for the UK are the responsibility of the UK to check.

Outrage on Twitter and other social media about lorry drivers leaving the UK not being allowed to take their ham sandwiches with them because if 'EU rules'

Riiight. I'm guessing they are also not allowed to have bent bananas?

It's a perfectly reasonable biosecurity restriction. As long as there's not a biosecurity arrangement, then such foods have to be considered a risk.

There have been outbreaks of animal diseases linked to ham before now.

Think about it: Ford at Brigend - GONE
The new Range Rover design for South Wales - diverted to France
The Nissan production line in Sunderland - GOING

British car industry: going, going, gone!

The money markets - HSBC upped and left to Frankfurt

AVIVA insurance services - hopping it

All for a tiny fishing industry.

Actually it was the Grenadier, not a Range Rover.

The Grenadier, proposed by arch-Brexiteer Jim Ratcliffe who suddenly had a change of heart when his own actual money was at risk

Following yet another phone call between Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen, she repeats both sides are working on a “Partnership Agreement”.

We voted to leave, we didn’t vote for a new EU treaty @BorisJohnson.

We have left. We didn't vote to end the majority of our trade. What an insufferable **** he is.

i suspect a rebellion is brewing in the Tory Party agianst Bojo. There is going to have be a scapegoat, and I suspect the Minister of Health will not be enough.

Is it possible that the end-of-year deadline will come and go and the various parties will go on in a "as -is" basis while the EU and UK negotiate until who knows when. IOW, is "muddle along" a possible strategy?

Not without an embarrassing u-turn from Boris Johnson, which would be opposed by the vast majority of his party.

It could happen, it should happen, it won't happen.

Ah, the endgame of Brexit. The UK becomes a 17th century Japan. See you all in about 200 years when we come for a visit in our flying cars in order to gawk at the traditional and quaint British people.

Too bad there's that border with Ireland though. Oh well. A wall?

Grant Shapps on BBC Breakfast asked about extending the transition period in light of the current crisis

"Absolutely not, we've got lorry parks ready to open up."

Interesting that he thinks lorry parks are a substitute for trade.

Presumably crematoriums are substitutes for medicine?

What's cheaper, keeping someone* alive using expensive drugs and NHS resources, or just allowing nature to take its course and cremating them ?

* - of course this only applies to the hoi polloi

With a little redesigning of the crematoria they could also be a useful source of energy.

Once again the UK is being run to keep the Conservative party from splitting.

And something which keeps me spitting feathers is talking to people who think we haven’t left the EU!!!! Talk about having uninformed opinions - “no we have to leave, can’t extend the transition”, how many times do you have to be told WE’VE LEFT before you realise WE’VE LEFT?!?!?!

There was simply no sensible or rational reason not to have negotiated an extension to the transition agreement period back in the summer. But we couldn’t do that because Johnson didn’t want the bad headlines.

It's almost like some (most?) Brexiteers don't actually know what they are talking about/don't know what they actually voted for/don't understand any of the processes involved.

But that can't be right, as we keep being told to respect democracy and respect other people's views...
