The Biden Presidency

*Raises* So why is AOC such a goddamned rockstar for going straight from bartender to small time publisher to local activist to political campaign help straight to goddamn SENATOR?
I'm curious what your ideal congessional candidate resume would look like.

Also "Congress" is a broad body and chances are some skillset a person possesses will have utility in at least one committee. Whether political realities allow for that is another matter. AOC and "the squad" played their freshman moment well, making it clear they would like to be placed where their interests aligned in order to not make the speaker vote a contentious moment.

I would say she's gotten good traction on Oversight & Reform and Financial Services.

A specific cabinet post is much more something I would want an appointee to have advanced skills in relevant fields.

Well, as another poster pointed out, she's a house representative rather than a senator. Given the greater number of representatives compared to senators, and given the smaller geographic regions they usually represent, they can be elected by appealing to a relatively small number of voters. (A senator usually has to have a slightly broader appeal.)

And I have to wonder how much of her "rock-star" image is due to the fact that Stubby McBonespurs and the rest of the MAGAchuds keep using her as a punching bag? If they weren't regularly harping on "AOC and the squad of communists", would they have gotten as much publicity as they have?

That's certainly part of it, but at this point I think much of her image and publicity has been earned by the way she's managed to clap back at everything that gets thrown at her.
Whenever they come for her, she usually ends up making them look stupid.

Well, lets take a look at Obama's cabinet (in his first term)...

Sec. of State: Clinton... as a senator served on a commission dealing with European relations, as well as the armed services committee (not to mention her series of connections from things like the Clinton Foundation, and her time as first lady)

Treasury: Geither... former president of the NY federal reserve bank

Defense: Gates... previously a member of a think tank that dealt with various middle east conflicts

Att. General: Holder... worked for the justice department and as a judge

Interior: Salazar... served in the Colorado department of natural resources

Agriculture: Vilsack... as gov. in Iowa, was involved in dealing with ethanol production

Commerce: Locke... May not have been a businessman, but he did serve as a gov.

Labor: Solis... member of several chambers of commerce and civil rights/workers rights organizations

Health and Human services: Sebelius... was on an insurance commission (so at least some familiarity with health care issues). Also served gov. of kansas (with whatever responsibility that comes with HHS on a state level)

Transport: LaHood... Was on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee

(Those are just the first ones I came across)

So it does look like it is more common than not to have someone with pre-existing expertise in the cabinet posting they are taking over.

Gates was also the incumbent SecDef.

Someone, a libertarian, on a forum complained that we are not making enough fun of Sleepy Joe. It's completely unfair to Trump!

I told him: We are enjoying the no satire zone. And looking forward to making fun of real people. Like Miley Cyrus. Trump is done, even for Satire. Biden almost too boring for satire.

He then went on to repeat old senile Biden jokes. Yawn. Heard them all.

Ann Coulter tweeted

@AnnCoulter
Some nut foreigner was just on MSNBC demanding that Biden appoint a "Food Czar" to solve the "national hunger crisis."

A dozen federal food programs is not enough!

You kinda answered your own question. A lot of campaigning is telling a good story and, as you yourself point out, she's got an all-american, apple pie and baseball story to tell.

Given the rate of childhood hunger in the US, it apparently isn't enough.

That's before getting to how Trump and the Republicans have been working hard to downsize those programs - very much including the ones that help kids. And then downsize them again. And again.

Biden to nominate former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to as secretary of energy.

Fun fact: her one of ancestors was the head of a municipality near where I live, back in 1920, before one of their children emigrated to North America.

I'm a political junkie and rarely do the Cabinet Secretaries have specific experience in the US. So we're not really different.

There is a difference in that in the UK (and most countries with parliamentary systems) the cabinet ministers have to be members of parliament. There is no requirement in the US that cabinet secretaries be members of Congress. Also if a Senator or Representative is appointed to a cabinet post, they have to resign their seat in Congress (separation of powers).

Once again Forerig Policy is the great joker in American Politics;
Looks as though Biden will have to deal with the fallout from the Russian hack which is worse then first reported . Been described as Cyber version of Pearl Harbor.

He picked a European soccer player to be the Secretary of the Interior?

Curious.
Native American with a Norweigan last name (Her father was or Norweigia Descent). Can't get a better American mixture then that.
