The Biden Presidency

Speaking of Warren, seems like she's getting a big lump of coal from St. Joe this xmas. Not seeing anywhere that she is even being considered for any role in the admin, despite her reputation as a administrative and policy "wonk".

Isn't she still a Senator? That works against an appointment.

I would have loved to have been the fly on the wall when Donnie heard that.

McConnell seems to have be one of only a few senators to dare to be so explicit.

Buzzfeed interviewed some other senators and the verbal gymnastics they were willing to go through to acknowledge Biden's victory with as many qualifications as possible are entertaining at the very least.

“That’s the gotcha question of the day. I know what the Constitution says, Article II, Section I, and I know that the Electoral College voted today, so to me, that tells us a lot.”

Q: “So based on the Electoral College vote is it done, in your mind?”

“Well, I follow the Constitution.”

"Well, it seems to me that being elected by the Electoral College is a threshold where a title like that is probably most appropriate and it's, I suppose you can say official — if there is such a thing as official president-elect, or anything else–elect. And there's an inauguration that will swear somebody in and that person will be the president of the United States, but whether you call it that or not, you know, there are legal challenges that are ongoing — not very many — probably not a remedy that would change the outcome but, so, I don't — again I don't know how politician refers to another politician, but it does look to me like the big race is really between the inaugural committee and the Justice Department at this point, so we'll see how the emails turn out."

Q: “Is it time to acknowledge Biden as president-elect?”

“I don’t have to — the Constitution does.”

Q: “And do you acknowledge him as president-elect?”

“I follow the Constitution.”

Perhaps. More importantly, Gov. Baker of MA is a Republican who would be naming a temporary replacement.

It's not unusual for Senators to get tapped for admin roles, and there's no problem pulling Sen. Kamala up the ladder for VP, but I suspect that having a safe D replacement lined up matters a lot.

I retract my question about Warren, seems there is good reason not to vacate that seat right now.

McConnell is pretty much betting on Most of the Trump supporters are more Mickey Mouse Republicans (people who will support anybody with an R after their name ) then hard line members of the Personality Cult. We will see if he is right or not.

I guess the question is, would she want a role in the Biden administration.

She's been in the senate a while and holds a significant amount of power and prestige there. Her background and current senate committee assignments might make her a fit for Labor (currently open) or Health and Human Services (already filled), but she'd be giving up a long-term (and powerful) senate role for a less visible cabinet position that may only last a few years (depending on whether Biden runs for re-election and wins).

As was to be expected, the nomination of Mayor Pete has unleashed a lot of homophobia on the internet from the Trumpers.

That's a fair point. For someone like Pete, it's a no brainer, because he really has nothing else going right now. Maybe he could try to run for another elected office, but cabinet position seems like a decent place to build connections and so on.

I'm curious how many Senators would actually step away from that role for such a job. probably not many, unless it was one of the primetime cabinet spots like sec of state.

When Abbott became head of the DOE, he started by saying stupid things and then spent like 6 months being briefed by people in the department explaining what they all did (I know someone who was part of that process). And he quit relatively soon, because he realized he was in way over his head.

Abbott DOE?

I'd say good for him. Not everyone would recognize that it was above their head and have the maturity to leave. Frankly, I would think being the head of DOE would be harder than the DOT. I'm a huge geek when it comes to the study of energy development and there is a lot of specialized technical knowledge that is very difficult to understand.

BTW, the DOE is also responsible for managing the 17 National Science Laboratories.

I think transportation while a big job is probably easier to grasp quickly.

As if who someone has sex with is a factor at how well they does their job.

And he's gay. Good luck getting a Republican Senate to confirm him.

I really don't think that will be a problem. The GOP is likely to take down one or two of Biden's nominees, but I doubt they'll go after Pete for this nomination.

Relatively speaking, he can't screw too much up. This might also be grooming him for other things later on, it's like a starter house for him.

I dunno. transportation is kind of important. What agencies fall under the DoT? There are quite a few safety and environmental issues the DoT addresses.

Yeah? Well doubt THIS!!!

50,000 Chinese troops were just bombed to death at the Canadian border in Maine!!! We cannot let them steal our precious maple syrup!!! JOE BIDEN INVITED THEM!!! STOP THE STEAL!!! THANK GOD FOR DONALD TRUMP!!!

If they get to Colorado, the Wolverines will take care of them.
