Some states have referendums, but there are no referendums on the national level.


To address your question about electors, the answer given previously is slightly wrong.

As one might expect in the USA, each state has different rules.

In every state, the winner of the popular vote gets to designate a slate of electors who will cast the actual electoral vote if that candidate wins. (Except Maine and Nebraska. In those states, the winner of the state gets to appoint two electors, and the winner of each each congressional district within the state gets to appoint one elector.) In some states, the elector is required to vote for whoever appointed him. If they attempt to vote for anyone else, they are automatically replaced immediately, and the replacement casts the vote. In some states, it is a crime for an elector to vote for anyone except the person who appointed him, but he can do it. In other states, the electors can vote for whomever they wish.

Electors who vote for anyone other than the candidate who appointed the elector are known as "faithless electors". There were seven of them in 2016. However, there has never been an election in US history whose outcome was changed as a result of a faithless elector.

This all made sense in 1789, but they made it very difficult to change.

Get swing means they can change depending on the particular election.

But what is "battleground"?

Same thing. i.e. they are places where the battle will be fought. No one is fighting over California or Utah.

CNN now says Fairfax count is up to 88%, Biden ahead in state by more than 200,000.

Doesn't seem to matter. Calis in, with their 55 electoral votes. There aren't enough States up for grabs to make it to 270. It's over, unless reporting is grossly incompetent.
 
On the upside, AP is reporting Biden winning both the pop and elec votes. Enjoy while you can. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
