That's why I don't get how this "Imminent Civil War" we're supposed to be having is going to work. There's no Mason-Dixon line anymore. What are we going to do break off into a separate country once you have 3 or more bars of cell phone coverage?

That's been true almost everywhere I have traveled. Mending the rural urban divide in my view is almost the best thing we can do for this country.

Well the only way to do that is to give the rural areas of this country something to do other than "Hurry and die off faster and please don't make a fuss while doing it" and neither the Left nor Right has any desire or plan for that.

The Right needs the rural areas angry and desperate so they can aim that anger and desperation at the Left long enough for them to rig the system enough that they'll be self-sustaining after their base dies off.

The Left has either written them all off as backwoods racists (which is a bad political tactic even if it's 100% true so nobody @ me) and on the rare occasions they present some plan to save the rural areas it's laughable in how naive and out of touch it is. And all of the Left's cherished pet issues that have a practical effect and aren't purely philosophical only "work" in dense urban areas.

This is the simplest argument for an end to the electoral college. Votes for Trump in California didn't really count, and neither did Clinton votes in Texas. It makes no sense that a few votes in a few states should decide the election.

We ultimately will reach a point where there won't be enough decent work to go around, and the haves will have to share more with the have-nots.

But "Difficult" crossed with "No motivation for anyone to actually fix it" is a poor place to start trying to come up with a solution.

And let's be real here, there's going to be a huge push to "punish" the rural areas for the sin of electing Trump coming from many circles. The morality of this is a discussion hardly worth even trying to have, but on a purely political level if the rural area's downward trend continues, even if we defeat Trump we will deal with another version of him sooner rather than later.

Even if Biden and the Dems pull off the most statistically unlikely Blue Wave dream of win on Tuesday the ~40% of Americans who supported Trump aren't going away and 40% of an electorate is "Too Big to Fail" politically.

There was already thread about it not so long ago. Conclusion was that if anything happens, it will look very differently than first civil war.

More like Troubles in Ireland - constant low-level violence with flareups, heavy police and military presence. Persecution, beatings, killings, law enforcement cooperating with bandits of correct stripe (actually, according to antifas here they already do that), paramilitary attacks and bombings, you know, entire shebang.

For me, this kind of scenario is pretty plausible during and after rethuglicans sets up their nice little right-wing authoritarian state in USA.

This has been true for decades. Every year we need less workers. Fewer people are required to farm, make or construct anything. But that is a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing for the haves. They get a larger pool of labor they can pay less.

But it's a curse because fewer people will have the resources to create a demand for their products.

It's a huge problem that is getting worse.

I'm a believer that instead of a universal income, we create and expand public works. There are projects nationwide that should be done. We need bridges, roads, subways and more. We could also pay people to visit the elderly, infirm and handicapped. I'm a huge believer in work. I think everyone should work. If only part time. We need to contribute to each other. Not just for their sake but for our own.

Hillary Clinton had a plan. She acknowledged the problems that rural areas were facing, and addressed them head-on. Coal is dying. Fracking is next in line. Giant American assembly lines aren't coming back from the dead. Rural areas have too many people to support on the remaining economic vehicles, so the only solution is retraining people into the service and tech industries to have skills that will be needed and do pay.

But instead of facing reality those people voted overwhelmingly for the guy who said he was going to wave his dick around and magic the black right back into their lungs.

And "service jobs" are even more pie in the sky. Service jobs scale hard. A town of 500 people can not support a self-sustaining service sector the way an area with a denser population density can. With 5 million people you get a lot of jobs out supporting the people, you can't with 500 hundred.
