2020 Presidential Election

What do you actually vote for? In the U.S. we vote for President/VP, senators, congressmen, governors, state legislators, mayors, sheriffs, city and county councils, school boards, often state and local judges, bond proposals and more. In California this year there are 14 "propositions" about spending or legal changes on the ballot. One advantage of voting by mail is that people have time to think about what they are doing.

21 separate and distinct votes on my ballot

President/Vice President
Congressional Representative
State Representative
County Clerk of Court
Justice of the Florida State Supreme Court (1 Justice)
District Court of Appeals (6 Judges)
Soil and Water Conservation Managers (2 Managers)
Six State Constitutional Amendments
Two local referendums.

Well sure, but I don't have to fill in the form at the place, I can do that at home. So I'm basically just bringing it it. They check my ID (which everybody has), give me special envelope, I put the form in, throw it in the box, done.

Most time consuming part is they have to look up my name in their papers, and mark I was there. Since one place serves about 1000 people, and they are usually split into 4 groups based by name, it means looking up one of 250 names for the person serving you. That's like 6 sheets, which comfortably fits on the table.

Texas is now a dead heat. Biden and Trump are both at 45.7. This could be an electoral landslide for Biden and change the face of politics in America. If Texas goes purple, there will be no large electoral state that goes reliably Republican anymore. It would mean that instead of Republicans starting out with about 163 reliable electoral votes, they'd have 125ish they can solidly count on and have to fight for Texas and Florida.

What the heck is happening in Texas? Their reported early voting is already at 80% of 2016's total votes cast:

If it were a swing state I'd suspect shenanigans, but it's Texas.

[ETA] Hypothesis: early reports of voter suppression (Harris county ballot boxes) has undermined confidence in the ability to vote on election day and driven up early in-person votes.

Have you seen the lines that have formed? I think the GOP went a few steps too far and went from “making voting real inconvenient” into “active suppression”that has ticked off a lot of people. Also, less indifference than 2016, no matter what side you are on.

I know it's risky but I'm saying Biden will outperform the polls in Texas. There's a new voter factor there that the polling isn't capturing. Trump may have done what no Democrat has every been able to do, get the Texan Hispanic potential voters to the polls.

The symbolism of the Republicans losing Texas can't be overstated either.

Even Texas going to the wire would mean something, even if it still goes Red.

....

That's the way it can work in the U.S. if you request a mail ballot in advance, or you live in one of the few states that mails them to all registered voters (despite Trump's howls). If you show up at the polls in the usual way, you'll mark a form or press buttons on an electronic screen on-site.

Before anyone can claim anything about those figures there is one statistic that we have to know, are they majorities for the republicans or not? If they aren’t then obviously it is evidence of huge voting fraud.

Trump probably can't win without Florida, and Pennsylvania, and Arizona.

Come on Pennsylvania. Save the Nation!

That one photo illustrates how out of touch Trump is, not one person (that I could see) isn’t wearing a mask, the queue is also quite well spaced out. It seems people are a lot more worried about the virus than he thinks they are.

Yes, one of the big problems with the US is that they actually have too much democracy, and they insist on doing it all on the same day.

In Canada, The Federal Election is just that - Federal, and nothing but. One vote, for your local MP, that represents the party you support.

Provincial and city or municipality level elections aren't held on the same day, and usually, not even in the same year, as the Federal elections. Plus, we don't have this bizarre notion that things like dogcatchers and medical examiners should be elected positions. We hire professionals for stuff like that.

Trump Tweets

Have a GREAT “MAGA-GRAS” Rally today on our wonderful Long Island. Cut Taxes, Stop Crime, VOTE FOR TRUMP. Our City and State are a MESS. What do you have to lose? Thank you!!!

Pennsylvania Ballot “mistakes” made, in my opinion, on purpose by the Democrat Governor, puts Republicans, in particular @SeanParnellUSA, at great risk. Corrupt politics in Pennsylvania must be investigated immediately. By the way, Philadelphia is out of control. @TheJusticeDept

Trump Tweets

Congratulations to @SenRonJohnson for his dogged pursuit, as Chairman of Homeland, of POLITICAL CORRUPTION!

I think Pennsylvania will go Biden safely but he'll probably match the polling data that exists now. Trump has a motivated base in Pennsylvania that will show up but there's a equally motivated anti Trump vote in the urban centers. Biden is three points ahead of where Clinton was at this point and she lost by a razor thin margin.

We vote for who we want to be our MP. there is a list of candidates with their party affiliation.
Put an X in the box next to the name you want. Fold it in half and drop it in the box.

Well it depends how many elections are running simultaneously. Sometimes it can be as many as 3 xs! (MP, county council, parish council)

That's blatantly fraudulent. There's no way there are that many under 60s in Florida :boxedin:
