Obviously not counting any unhatched chickens, but imagine being so desperate to prove your guy is ahead in the polls that you refer to a poll taken of the readers of a right wing tabloid in a foreign country.

I'm not very familiar with publications in the UK, but is it right wing? I thought it might be given, well, the poll and the article on it, but a brief glance at the front page didn't throw immediate red flags. Then again, I'm not familiar with British politics, so I could be missing things.

ETA: yeah, looks like they backed Brexit, and endorsed the Conservative party every election except for in 2001 when they backed the labor party and in 2015 when they backed UKIP. So no bias in their audience. Nope. Not at all.

Well, more than 10 million people have already voted compared to a fraction of that at this point in 2016. However, it's hard to tell if that's just because of Covid and the greater availability of mail in voting and people are opting to vote earlier than normal, or there's also a general increase in voter turnout.

Yes, probably to do with Covid, but also a lack of trust in what Trump is doing in relation to what he is saying about mail-in votes.

I think either way it is symptomatic of a desire to get him out. They are not lining up eager to keep him in anyway.

I think a really big one is the “dislike” factor. Clinton was really disliked by a lot of people, and importantly, by a far larger number of “independents” than Biden is. I am also assuming that the Greens will have far fewer votes this year as people rally to Biden to get Trump out.

[Anecdote warning]I do know a few American far lefties in Japan and they were staunchly anti-Clinton while complaining that too many people were supporting Trump (“hello! He can’t win if you all vote Clinton!”). This year they seem much more to be selectively praising bits they like that Biden has said, and saying that once the election has happened, then they can start holding Biden to account, but that in the meantime, they have to get the racist, authoritarian clown out of the White House.

So there *do* seem to be some tangible differences this year.

One issue this year is availability of poll workers. Polls are staffed by volunteers, who tend to be elderly people. Many of those people are not willing to volunteer in the current covid situation.

Actually, nine million people have already voted. It's already started. I voted on Sunday by dropping off a ballot in a drop box. By the end of the week, I expect around 20 million votes will have already been cast. Some states are starting in person early voting this week. Here in Maryland, the county put out about half the drop-boxes last week and the rest will be in place this week. Most States will be full on into early voting by next week. An October surprise won't change votes already cast.

For the votes not cast, I'm not sure there's an October surprise voters would care about out there. This election is about COVID-19 and nothing else. A second COVID-19 relief bill might help Trump but that seems unlikely. It would also help Democrats since they would have to vote for it too. A vaccine announcement right now would be a farce. Hardly anyone would take it if available right now. Besides the story wouldn't be the vaccine, it would be the about the political influence on the process.

Since a vaccine is off the table, Trump's now imagining there is a miracle cure. Regeneron is not cooperating.

He would also like Biden arrested. Barr is not cooperating.

He might have gone with 'elect me and get the SCOTUS of your dream'. He went with, 'I'll just get the SCOTUS to declare me the winner'. It's possible that seeing the writing on the wall, McConnell fed that notion.
