The White House (~4,000 workers/residents, about 55,000 square feet) has 34 COVID cases.

The entire country of New Zealand (population of 5 million, about 100,000 square miles) has 37.

I have full faith in Trump and all his supporters/apologists ability to not care in the slightest about the obvious hypocrisy.
 
Some time ago, Trump, his administration, and his legion of supporters settled on presenting his ban on travel from China as his definitive and decisive measure to combat the spread of coronavirus in the U.S. Trump has even added to the storyline the canard that he was the lone decider on the ban, standing tall against an army of disbelievers and naysayers all around him, from his advisers to Democrats to the media. His action, far from being xenophobic in its intent, showed the world his uncanny measure of natural brilliance of mind and decision making.

There are problems with this Trump, Republican and Trump-cult narrative.

1. As pointed out many times, Trump's China ban was leaky. To quote Snopes: "A restriction on foreigners traveling from mainland China took effect on Feb. 2, 2020, but thousands of Chinese and foreign nationals from Hong Kong and Macau entered the U.S. in the three months following. Thousands of Americans and foreigners still arrived in the U.S. on direct flights from China after the restrictions were imposed."

And "There was no ban on travel from China’s administrative zones, as thousands of travelers managed to enter the U.S. from Hong Kong and Macau, regions also struck by COVID-19. Many travelers did not receive the same enhanced screenings for the virus as those required by Americans returning from mainland China."

2. Someone on this thread, maybe Chris, stated that the reason the east coast got hit so hard was because of travel from China, somehow circumventing Trump's ban effecting the west coast, presumedly a point made to show how many potential deaths the rest of the country would have suffered without Trump's wise ban on flights from China. The problem with this scenario is that New York and other east coast destinations were infected by travel from Europe prior and after Trump announced a travel ban on Europe (on March 11, over a month after his China ban). As has been reported, this ban led to chaos as many Americans, some already infected, boarded planes and overloaded airport coronavirus checkpoints, with many told to just self-isolate when they got home.

3. Now, a counter intuitive argument. The idea that travel bans are always a good idea may not hold true. Actually, I've seen comments arguing the exact opposite; such bans are counter-productive. We do know that the Obama administration did not institute a travel ban from nations with reported Ebola infections in 2014. It worked out. According to the following article: "Such restrictions are ineffective and economically costly for all sides. Initial estimates are that U.S. travel restrictions against China will cost the U.S. economy $10.3 billion. They also have more insidious downsides: incentivizing countries to conceal outbreaks, hindering response efforts, infringing on human rights, and fueling the spread of xenophobia." https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/02/23/virus-travel-bans-are-inevitable-but-ineffective/ I'm not completely convinced by this argument, but it is worth mentioning.

This issue may seem off topic as to the theme of this thread. But Trump's insistence his travel ban concerning China saved the country "tens of thousands" and maybe "even millions" of American lives is a Trumpian fiction. It's part and parcel of his current crop of fiction concerning Covid-19, for instance downplaying the irony of his own infection and his silly tin-pot perception of himself as some Nietzschean hero that America needs.

It has to do with abortion politics, and the science of using human tissue to test and to make medicines. Regeneron’s therapy indirectly relied on tissue taken from an abortion. ...

And what irony, Trump has tried to reverse the regulations under Obama that allowed using fetal tissue for research:
Trump’s base, of course, is strongly against abortion rights and his administration acted quickly to reverse many Obama era policies — including policies that moved forward scientific research involving human fetal tissue.

Especially involved are human embryonic stem cells, made using days-old embryos, usually taken from fertility clinics. They’re leftover from when couples make extra fertilized eggs and then do not need them. In the past, this tissue was also sometimes taken from abortions.

This particular research was exempt because it didn't rely on government funding? Except it did. So I don't get that part. Maybe it was because they used the fetal stem cells earlier in the process.

They have a kind of immortality and flexibility that other cells do not. It’s why scientists fight so hard to keep access to this research, despite the efforts of anti-abortion activists.

“Research using such stem cells allows Regeneron to model complex diseases, test new drug candidates and can help unlock new scientific insights that ultimately could lead to the discovery of new treatments for people with serious diseases,” the company said in a statement posted last April.

If it's true the cocktail is derived from aborted fetuses, could someone please start tweeting about it? I know they probably already have, but conservative memes seem much more virulent than those spread by liberals. The Pubs wouldn't even care if it were true. No, it's probably not going to change any minds but why not get it out there? How many babies would be sacrificed to make this product available to everyone?
