Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 24

Trevor Noah has apparently bought a print ad:

I liked his recent synopsis of the message from the Republican Convention.

"Good God, I'm terrified!" says Noah. "And confused! Because if Joe Biden gets elected, MS-13 is gonna move in next door, but we won't live there anymore because we'll be kicked out of the suburbs, and if we try to go to church the Democrats will call the cops on us, but there won't be any cops because they defunded the police, so we'll have to take ourselves to prison! But they abolished the prisons! So now all the criminals are out on the streets, which means they can shoot us! But they can't shoot us because the Democrats have taken away all the guns, which means all we can do is fight with our words, but we can't because words have been cancelled! I don't know what it means!"

This article discusses recent poll results about Americans attitudes to race.

Some results: 59% of Americans say that black people face discrimination in America, and 13% of Americans say that white people face discrimination in America. 26% of Republicans believe that black people face discrimination in America, and 28% of Republicans believe that white people face discrimination in America.

70% of Democrats believe that systemic racism exists in America, whereas 66% of Republicans believe that racism can be attributed to a few bad apples.

This Pew poll from 2017 goes into even more depth:

A wide majority of Democrats and Democratic leaners (81%) now say the country needs to continue making changes to give blacks equal rights with whites.

[...]

Among Republicans and Republican leaners, most (59%) say the country has already made the needed changes to give blacks equal rights with whites; 36% say that more needs to be done.

[...]

Overall, 64% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say that racial discrimination is the main reason why many black people can’t get ahead these days, compared with 28% who say blacks who can’t get ahead are mostly responsible for their own condition.

[...]

Most Republicans reject the idea that discrimination is the main reason why blacks can’t get ahead. Three-quarters (75%) say that blacks who can’t get ahead in this country are mostly responsible for their own condition; just 14% say racial discrimination is the main reason why many blacks can’t get ahead.

[...]

Today, about half (52%) of Republicans and Republican leaners say these [affirmative action] programs are a good thing, while 39% say they are a bad thing.

[...]

Currently 84% of Democrats and Democratic leaners view these programs positively, a modest increase from 78% in 2014.

[...]

Among Republicans and Republican leaners, 63% say the bigger problem in the country is people seeing discrimination where there actually is none.

[...]

Views among Democrats and Democratic leaners are the reverse: 79% say that the bigger problem in the country is people not seeing discrimination where it really does exist.

[...]

Overall, 84% of Democrats and Democratic leaners say immigrants do more to strengthen than burden the country.

[...]

Republicans are split in their views of the contributions of immigrants: 44% say immigrants do more to burden the country, while about as many (42%) say they do more to strengthen the country.

There are definitely differences between the parties when it comes to race.

If you go far enough right, you admit that systematic racism is real, but rationalize that it's a good thing and the government should do more.

Over 100 Ex-Staff Members for John McCain Endorse Joe Biden

“More than 100 former staff members for Senator John McCain are supporting Joseph R. Biden Jr., a show of support across the political divide that they hope amplifies the “Country First” credo of the former Arizona senator.”

Won't move the needle that match, still good to see some Republicans not falling for the Cult

My favorite white people are the ones who think that discrimination against black people isn’t a thing or has been resolved but also believe that white people face discrimination.

Trump hates Canada because they took down the Trump on the property he had licensed.
Therefore, Canada is worse than North Korea, which still might license a Trump Tower.

That's all.

Be nice if it was someone who hadn't already written off their political career with the G.O.P.

I guess it's an either/or situation, kowtow to Trump's every word and whim or find another party.

The phone number in the "ad" is live: "You have reached Trevor Noah & Associates. If you are the President of the United States, press 1. ...." Pressing 1 leads to Noah's offer to transport Trump and his family to Uganda, a "goat-based economy" that doesn't have extradition. 2 goes to a get-out-the-vote message.

Just looked over the old vs the new Rose Garden because I thought people were exaggerating how bad the new is.

Before and after photos of Melania Trump's Rose Garden renovation

Here Are The Before And After Photos Of Melania Trump's White House Rose Garden Renovations

She removed the majority of the blossoming trees, took out all the colorful tulips and put in a lot of white somethings, (roses I guess).

You won't see the tulips until spring but ti is a shame that the apple blossom trees were taken out.

Kellyanne Conway makes a case that the killings of peaceful protesters will benefit Trump politically

"The more chaos and anarchy and vandalism and violence reigns, the better it is for the very clear choice on who's best on public safety and law and order"

Doesn't she know it's already happening with Trump as president?

How exactly is “more” of it going to make the case that he can stop it?

The photo from above makes it look as if the turf was taken up and relaid really badly. Not sure any of this is newsworthy (lady does gardening), but I’ve commented on it so I don’t get to judge.

The new garden is kind of boring. The color scheme of the planting is too pale. There's really nothing to draw the eye.

Because it's all about the fear that can be aroused in the Republican playbook - especially this cycle's Republican playbook.

They don't even have a party platform, after all. Also, there's more than a few people who think that him sending in troops to, for example, Portland was intentionally about increasing any chaos and violence so they could attack the Democrats for it. That's alongside numerous other cases of intentionally harming blue states, pretty obviously so they could attack the Democrats for political gain.

I don't really care either way, but... I'm also wondering if the all white color scheme is little more than yet another dog whistle to the white supremacists.

I was just really surprised to learn they had apparently left Michelle Obama's vegetable garden alone. I'd have thought Trump would've had it dug up faster than blinking. I suppose he doesn't care about vegetables, and that the current First Lady isn't as pettiful and vengeful.

Listen I'm all onboard for some Trump bashing, but the level of freaking out about the goddamn Rose Garden got old for me about 3.4 second after it happened.

"Americana meets Greco-Roman, as if Norman Rockwell threw up on the Parthenon, is the only style allowed at the White House" is something I'm just so over and I'm, if we're being honest, also done with "Jackie" being held up as the ultimate example of what First Lady "should be" mainly in that I think the idea that there's a "right" way to be in a totally symbolic non-elected position gives me the same off vibe I get from hearing our friends across the pond go on about how the Royals "should" act.

Agreed. Remember it's the same Trump administration that sent actual soldiers to the Mexican border for no reason other than to help the party in the midterms.

Absolutely agree. There's plenty not to like about Ttump without getting all bent about that.

I like how people make it sound like Melania's out there herself, in overalls, with a spade digging up bushes and watering seeds. Motivated by spite per her enemies, by a devotion to gardening per her friends. I think it's infinitely more likely that "decide on a new garden!" is just another BS thing thrown at her by handlers as part of the responsibilities she got lumbered with in a job she never asked for. She probably just picked the first brochure someone handed her, said "that looks fine, do that" and went on with her life.
