Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 24

I'm assuming there was no republican challenger, since he is the incumbent. And if there was a challenger, they did not get any delegates. They only acknowledged Sanders because he came in second in the delegate count, IIRC.
There were 4 other Republicans who challenged Trump in the primaries. Or, at least, they did in the states where the GOP allowed Trump to be challenged in the primaries. In a number of states the GOP decided to cancel their primaries or caucuses and simply declare Trump the winner of their delegates. I believe the number of states where Republicans held presidential primaries this year was less than 20.

In addition to many states deciding not to have a Republican presidential primary, the RNC decided there was no need to hold any debates among the candidates, as that would have helped Republican primary voters be aware they had other choices besides Donald Trump they could vote for, so they didn't hold any.

The other candidates for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination were former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld (who received close to 450,000 votes in the primaries he was able to compete in); former Illinois representative Joe Walsh (who received close to 175,000 votes); real estate developer Rocky De La Fuente (who received a little more than 100,000 votes); and former South Carolina governor Mark Sanford (who received a little over 4,000 votes).

While Democratic primaries generally apportion delegates based on what percentage of the vote different candidates receive, for 2020 the national party leaders urged states to go with winner-takes-all for their primaries. I'm not sure which states went that way, but Trump won by large enough majorities in all the states which held GOP presidential primaries to receive all their delegates, and he was awarded all the delegates in the states which didn't hold primaries. That's why none of the other candidates will be placed into nomination or receive any votes at the convention. But there were indeed other Republican candidates, even though relatively few people seem to be aware of that fact.

Technically, Bill Weld apparently did win 1 delegate. He dropped out after Trump had enough to win, though.

Both Trump Jr and his girlfriend sounded & looked like they were blitzed on coke... Coincidence or did they blast some rails backstage.

I just saw a clip of Kimberly Guilfoyle's speech at the GOP Convention.

What a shouty, unbelievable, performance. I'm not saying she's a terrible actor but I got an overwhelming whiff of ham.

Huh? Jerry "admits" his wife had a fling? Isn't she the one who should "admit" that fact? And where's her statement saying they're working to repair the damage as is traditional in such matters, especially the political class. I suspect there's more rot yet to be revealed.

He was fairly obviously trying to get ahead of the story with his own narrative. There's also reports of complaints about Falwell missending sex pics to a lot of people working as staff at Liberty U.

You need to catch up on the Falwell thread. He sat in a corner watching while the pool boy screwed his wife. And there are apparently pictures....

Yeah, that's the first of the opposing narratives. Falwell's a long time scumbag, either way. I'd ask why he has any religious influence at all... but I already know the answer to that well enough, I think, given the people that he influenced.

OMG, now that's interesting. I was watching the House hearing on DeJoy and the USPS and when it ended I switched to the other CSPAN channel for a minute. They were having the states' roll call live. My first thought was it's quite dull compared to the Democrats' convention. My second was that must be why they are putting this on during the day instead of during the convention itself.

That Trump is complaining that it isn't being covered live is pitiful. Did Fox cover it live? I imagine Donny watched every minute since everyone cheered that he got unanimous delegate votes.

Looks like it had some... highlights, though.

Like -

Alabama's crowning achievement according to its RNC representative is that it's "the state with the highest approval rating in the country for Donald Trump."

and

BOSSIE: “Maryland is home of the Underground Railroad and two of our greatest segregat … uh, uh, abolitionists.”

To poke elsewhere, then...

Feds Charge Lobbyist, Alleging Scheme To Extradite Bannon’s Chinese Dissident Yacht Buddy

Among other things -

Prosecutors did say that the effort to extradite Guo culminated in a call with Broidy, President Trump, and an unnamed person aboard that unnamed person’s yacht.

Next, to poke at DeJoy's testimony in a couple articles -

Rep. Kate Porter gets DeJoy to admit he doesn't even know how much a postcard stamp costs

AOC introduces Postmaster General DeJoy to concept of accountability. Apparently he's 'new to this'

Watch 30-year postal veteran congresswoman calmly dissect Trump and postmaster general's sabotage

Moving on -

Lincoln Project has another ad out - Evil.

Speaking of Kushner, though -

Revealed: Jared Kushner’s Private Channel With Putin’s Money Man

Looks like those secret back channel efforts bore fruit. Foul, rotten fruit, but still fruit.

So, some more problems for Trump.

First, another Trump loss:

From: The Mother Corp (a.k.a. the CBC)
The WTO dispute-resolution panel declared that the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. International Trade Commission were wrong in 2017 when they imposed countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber exports...

Admittedly, not sure where this will go form here. Trump is someone who doesn't really respect international agreements, and the U.S. has already labeled the ruling "unfair".

And more developments in one of the investigations into Trump's finances:

The New York state attorney general is asking for a court to compel Eric Trump to be deposed in an investigation of the Trump Organization.

From: CNN
In court filings Monday, Letitia James' office said Eric Trump initially agreed to sit for a deposition on July 22, only to refuse, "balking less than two days before he was scheduled by agreement to give testimony."
...
The attorney general's office has been investigating President Donald Trump and the Trump Organization since 2019, when Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen testified before Congress that Trump's annual financial statements inflated the values of his assets in order to secure favorable loans and insurance coverage, but deflated the value of other assets in order to reduce real estate taxes....Eric Trump's attorney sent a letter to the attorney general saying he would invoke "those rights afforded to every individual under the Constitution" as justification not to testify.

So, Eric Trump is taking the fifth amendment.

A wise man once said:

"If you're innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment...The mob takes the Fifth."

From past experience, block replacements to judicial appointments to the court / panel that ruled against the US so preventing any further cases from proceeding, and threaten sanctions against those judges that voted against the US since they are a threat to the security of the US. There is little difference currently between US foreign policy and the behaviour of the local gangster. Forced sale of a business and demanding your cut of the deal...

Joe Biden has said he would lock down the Country again. That’s crazy! We’re having record job growth and a booming stock market, but Joe would end it all and close it all down. Ridiculous!

A better headline: "Republican political activist with history of dodgy claims, tries to brew up a storm in DNC primary".

1) I found the vitriol kinda scary.

2) I believe the majority of appearances were prerecorded. If hers was, it means the powers-that-be watched it and concluded “Good to go!”. Red meat to the base and all that.

3) Physical attractiveness should not matter, but I always thought she was reasonably attractive during her Fox days. Not last night*. Not sure if it was the lighting or makeup or something else, but I found her actually ugly. But that’s just me!

*Weirdly, stills from last night’s appearance make her look OK. Maybe it was the anger and vitriol that was ugly, not her actual appearance.

Very appreciative that
@CNN
covered the vast majority of the Republican Convention last night. That was really good for CNN, while at the same time being good for our Country. Thank you!

Tempus fugit and all that, but I think it's entirely possible that the spittle flecked invective was your turn-off.

I'm just seriously wondering how much effort Donald Trump Jr put into finding someone who looks so much like Melania.

Not all, apparently...

Did they drop their "Keep America Great" slogan? It says "Make America Great Again" on the podium.

Their whole shtick makes perfect sense since in their timeline Biden is the incumbent and Trump the insurgent candidate full of promises and with a clean sheet.

Quite amazing.

Bizarro World

Maybe it's setting up for a third run at the Presidency because the first one didn't count because of Russia Hoax, Impeachment, Spying, Covid and so on.

2016-2020 just never happened ;)

For our Country to be sending 80 million UNSOLICITED BALLOTS is very unfair and a roadmap to disaster. Even recent small and easier to control elections which did this are a catastrophic disaster. Fraudulent & missing Ballots like never seen before. 20% and 30% off. STOP!

Yep, I just watched Kimberly Gargoyle, and I completely believe they were recorded and her speech was what they wanted.

This is Donald Trump. He is not looking for subtlely and nuance. He thinks that kind of bluster and over-the-top histrionics looks good.

Really, I think dudalb got Donald Trump and Trump's sychophants right by referring to Trump as Dear Leader. They love this stuff...

I think the Dems have to start splicing together clips of Dear Leader and his little hands, with the ultra-jingoism of the sychophants.

Thought it was 51 million ?

At this rate, by the time of the election it'll be 450 million and he might have a case ;)
