This is actually the correct pronunciation. Most Americans say it wrong. Thailand is pronounced phonetically. It’s “Thighland,” not “Tai-land.

I’m highly amused to see supposedly sophisticated media types snickering at @realdonaldtrump for saying “Thighland.” These faux-sophisticates don’t realize Trump’s way of saying it is right. “Tai-land” is the crude lingo of people who have never been to “Thighland”

I’m really enjoying the “Thighland” controversy I seem to have kicked off. Outside of America, every English speaking country, starting with the one that invented the language, pronounces it the way Trump did. “Tai-land” is for frontier people who like to simplify pronunciations

Let me clarify. I’m not saying “Thighland” is how it is said in the Thai language. The French say “Paree” but that’s not how it is pronounced in English. “Thighland,” not “Tai-land,” is how English speakers around the world say it

I have gone, NOT I have went. He got up and went, NOT he up and went. I have eaten, NOT I have ate. Regardless, NOT irregardless. Thighland (soft th-sound), NOT Tai-land. These five little corrections would do wonders for the English language as spoken in America

The man has never had a computer on his desk in his entire life. He is not a reader.

He doesn't even read these pre-prepared speeches before he actuall y has to. At least I can't imagine he does, because they always come across as things he's never seen before.

The man's a bloody moron.
He even admits at the end that the Thai's do not pronounce it Thighland.
And yet he doubles down.

Thai's have hard time pronouncing a th sound.

I have never heard a Thai pronounce the th in Thailand. I don't speak Thai, but I know that when Thais speak about each other in the Thai language, I've always picked it up as "Tai".

And I have never heard anyone from another English speaking country pronounce the th. Anyone from the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc, can confirm they pronounce the th?

I've been to Thailand yearly for a decade now, and I've never heard this.

I don't really get this argument. It's not even called Thailand in Thai, so how can he have pronounced it "in the Thai language"? And why did he choose this one country to suddenly start pronouncing it "their" way?

ETA: I just watched the video. He says Thighland, and then not even a second later he says Tailand. So which is it? Is he being worldly and broad minded and pronouncing it "their way" but still also saying it in English?

ETA2: Maybe Yo-Semite is how native Californians pronounce it?

ETA3: This just came to mind. Many of my Thai friends have studied English at university. They still have problems making the "th" sound in English.

Canada here, we say "tai".

I asked some Thai friends. They say tai.

The rural people in south Thailand say the th-sound, but not the way Trump does.

And in most of the world, "Dinesh D'Souza" is pronounced "Dimwit D'Ouchebag."

As someone who has lived their entire life in “the one that invented the language”, I can confidently say that that is “utter bollocks”.

Mr. D'Souza is incorrect.

ETA: Nine-ja'd by others.

When I pronounce Thailand, I'm between the harder "t" and the softer "th". For the former, the tip of the tongue comes off the roof of the mouth a bit of a distance behind the incisors. For the latter, tongue tip is off the edge of the incisors. For "Thailand", tongue tip starts at the rear face of the incisors. I've done this unconsciously as long as I can think back.

But I do t know if this subtlety is warranted or correct. ;)

Pronunciation for me has long been important. I sometimes do get compliments on my emulation of foreign names and words.

There's someone running for state assembly here in WA state (my district) with party identifation on the ballot listed as "Trump Republican". I laughed when I saw that.

Yesterday the dimwit was arrested for vandalizing a rainbow flag that was flying at a church. It turns out he's an insane anti everything activist, including the right of women to vote, with an extensive criminal record.

He is projecting how it is pronounced in his country of origin...India. I am sorry you have to put up with him. But then, it is not just America that has cornered the market on deplorables.

I can't wait to hear what he does to my favorite city in Japan: Fukuoka.

(BTW the correct pronunciation is hoo-kuoka.)

If Trump corrected himself immediately, then it should be a non-story, like Biden's gaffe with the 150 million/thousand.

Question: has Donnie stopped coloring his hair and laid off the burnt umber skin cream?
Or are more news items I see cribbing shooped pics from FoxNews?
Really... was there a change I completely missed a couple weeks ago?
I have noticed that under certain lighting his hair looks whiter. It doesn't seem his makeup/hair artists are consistent, though.

Trump Tweets

After yesterday’s statement, Sleepy Joe Biden is no longer worthy of the Black Vote!
