White Fragility

The entire thing seems misguided.
I was struck by the inclusion of "children having their own room".
Real thing? Or just something the author pulled out of their ass to fluff up the chart?

A lot of this stuff is definitely roll your eyes drivel. The first two white privileges listed here are:

I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.

I can avoid spending time with people whom I was trained to mistrust and who have learned to mistrust my kind or me.

I can imagine how the white power knotheads might perceive being in the company of people of their race most of the time as being important and desirable. And the second one is really the first, with a little extra hate thrown in.

Note: Some of the things listed as white privilege are legit. But as you point out, adding things to make a list look bulkier than it is tends to weaken the argument.

Interesting that the three people in this thread who have or are reading the book (eerok, Brainster and Captain Howdy) are just doing it to see how over-the-top it actually is. If she had written a more reasonable tome, she might not have cracked the Amazon top ten.

Anyways, I can't help but feel like there's some sort of anti-racist competition going on here. Whoever can find the most trivial thing to call 'white privilege' or 'racism' wins the anti-racist crusader of the year award.

... and that means racism doesn't exist, isn't a problem, or you get "The Left is being too anti-racist" points you get to cash in future discussion.

Just like how you think Justin Smollett somehow makes other racists acts against black people not happen.

"I'm way more worried about people being over-dramatic about the problem then I am about the problem" is pure psychopathy.

We get it. Progressives are annoying. You're not blowing anyone's mind, squeeging anyone's third eye, or shattering anyone's world view.

There are plenty of discussion and criticism of the book in legitimate media sources. AFAICT "newdiscourses" is a right wing site of no particular account or credibility that seems more interested in triggering right wing voters than providing legitimate discussion. Eg on his twitter feed of the author of a number of these articles seems to be a Trump supporter who is greatly amused by words like "pandumbic".

Be that as it may, it's still a stupid book, and I'd expect criticism of it from the left, right, and center. Consider a summary of the book that I think is fair: if you're white, you're racist. If you disagree, that's white fragility.

So people who don't care about race, who don't believe in racial difference, who believe it's right and just to treat everyone equally, are apparently racist and "fragile" merely by being born white. DiAngelo is an idiot.

You can still see it here. It's pretty wacky.

Wow, I'm failing at whiteness. [emoji41]

ETA: Wonder how it feels to be a young POC in STEM if "rational linear thinking" and an emphasis on quantitative reasoning are generally considered aspects of "white culture" in the university.

I never understood why Protestants lay claim to "work ethic" as if it's something they invented. Heck, it's even counter to their own theology in that they downplay the importance of works in favor of "faith alone"! If anything, it should be "Catholic work ethic" because in Catholicism you can't get to Heaven unless you do good works.

The whole point is how certain perceptions by the majority group institutionalized certain cultural standards as correct. There wouldn't exist an equivalent for blackness.

Along with the assertion that they've become "normalized", it was a list of aspects of white culture like their traditions, attitudes and way of life (for example objective, rational, linear thinking).

I'd like to see them do a list of aspects of black culture. Like their traditions, attitudes and way of life. There should be one of those, no? Or do only white people have traditions, attitudes and a way of life?

Meh, both religions mandate that you take a day off every week, the work-shy layabouts.

I want to see that list, too.

It isnt white culture. It says in the paragraph that it is white dominant culture. There isnt a black dominant culture in the US to compare to.

Ughm.....

Maybe the "white" dominant culture isn't so "white"?

Maybe the dominant culture is simply "what works" best for the most people?

Let me take a look at leadership of US institutions for the last 200 years....
....looks pretty white.
