Anarchy in Seattle--Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone

So the protesters were illegally blocking the freeway. Now I think I understand. Why did police allow this situation in the first place? Arrest the protesters, tow away the cars that are illegally parked on the freeway.
Arresting them, or even attempting to get them off the freeway, is no longer an option.
We tried that in Philadelphia, the freeway was cleared- but some of the protestors feelings were bruised- and now the City must face lawsuits, demotions, firings, and apologies on behalf of the Mayor.

We now celebrate their civic spirit.

And by supporting CHOP, are you not complicit in unconscionable violence and oppression that is inherent in that system? Security forces where no roster exists. No background checks or training. No body cameras and no way to hold them accountable to the public and when they do commit unconscionable acts of violence, a cultural of silence so they are never held accountable for their actions. A system where the voices of the people living there are irrelevant. Mob rule isn't any variety of liberation from the wrongdoings of the police.

I have remained cautiously ambivalent of the CHAZ since day one. While I support the efforts of the anti-police brutality protesters in cities like Seattle where the cops have been especially violent to demonstrators, I had many concerns about the practicality of this tactic. As someone not facing the dangers of police violence in Seattle, I have tried not to monday morning quarterback the decisions made by those facing real danger.

My main quibble with the CHAZ/CHOP tactic is how the general public perceives it. While no-one serious in the CHOP actually expected it to become a functioning, autonomous anarchist state, it was very easy for reactionary press to distract from the greater narrative of defunding the police. Demands from the CHOP about how the city of Seattle uses the police were largely ignored in favor of flashy stories about silly anarchists and utopian visions. In retrospect, I think it would have been more productive for demonstrators to continue nightly marches and not set up a short term encampment on the streets where SPD abandoned. The CHOP simply allow too easy opportunity for people to change the subject to police policies to bandy about tropes of silly leftists, some of which is deserved, but much of it was absurd.

I am awaiting further details of this shooting, but I think much of the criticism of a crowd-sourced security force is valid. Having nameless, faceless people walking around with rifles making security decisions is not a recipe for success, and the CHOP is simply too small and too closely within the city to establish any meaningful separate society, which was never the goal.

My hope, now that the CHOP is gone, is that ordinary demonstrations and protest marches can resume and the focus can return to where it was originally aimed, at the police.

It turns out that the judge ordered reporters to not broadcast images of the suspect's face in the Dawit Kelete case which also explains why KING 5 edited their coverage of the case to remove some ridiculous line about having some policy where they don't publish a name/image until someone's actually been charged. No doubt they got their ass handed to them by their readership for that.

Good try with the CT angle though.

Post 458, the idea that the press was keeping a lid on the perp's image was suggested to be a CT. Turned out to be a real thing.

Seems more like incorrect speculation than CT. Post 457 is more suggestive of CT.

Did you miss the bit in #458 where it said "You need to move this to the CT forum." ?

Post #457 OTOH is informative, insightful and spot on. :)

I'm having trouble locating the Official BLM spokesperson in the image. Could you point them out, please?

The CEO of antifa got arrested in Seattle. It's a trying time for the international org.

My point is that whatever conspiracy theory that right wingers are tying to spin about the black Seattle driver that drove into the protesters is totally bunk. There is plenty of obvious anger and calls for justice directed towards this person, despite them not being a white guy.

Yeah, the BLM antifa terrorists are going to bury this story because the guy was black. It doesn't fit the narrative. Oh, btw, here's a photo of demonstrators in Richmond holding a sign "Avenge Summer Taylor". Really turning the other cheek, huh?

If you download the photo and blow it up, the people holding the sign are pretty white looking. Id hate to think there's a group of white people out there calling for the murder of a black person.

It wasn't incorrect.

But it seems someone has an imaginary version of things:
KING 5 edited their coverage of the case to remove some ridiculous line about having some policy where they don't publish a name/image until someone's actually been charged.
WTF?

The guy's name was known. People found the name on social media that included pictures.

I don't think any of the local news media confirmed that was indeed the right person until he was arraigned and then they didn't show his face. What they did do though was interview the father. And they showed him from behind where it was clear he was black.

It's a pretty straightforward news policy to be careful about blasting the wrong picture of someone all over the news. Boston Marathon bombing news coverage was a lesson learned.

No news media is covering up the fact he was black. That is the CT which belongs in the CT forum.

Only I didn't say anything about covering up the fact that he was black, I didn't offer any speculation as to the news media's reluctance to include a photo at all.

Had I done so, I would have gone with Seattle being embarrassed because, right now, that city is wearing a giant clown nose.

Hey....Let's have a "summer of love" and let all these anarchists seize some territory and set up their own ersatz state. What could possibly go wrong ?

or

Hey, let's let these protesters illegally ( we can bend the rules for these guys because, dammit, we're progressive ) blockade an interstate highway. What could possibly go wrong ?

But now we know it's because a judge slapped a muzzle on the press.

Which is it Stout? Do the BLM protesters want to lynch him, or are they trying to sweep it under the rug because it doesn't fit the narrative of "angry white reactionary"?

You tell me

I was talking about the MSM, you're replying with social media.

Majority of Seattle council pledges to support Police Department defunding plan laid out by advocates

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/majority-of-seattle-council-pledges-to-support-police-department-defunding-plan-laid-out-by-advocates/

Reports are a veto proof majority of Seattle council members support a plan to defund SPD by as much as 50%, reallocating that money for other social services within the city.

Decriminalize Seattle and King County Equity Now laid out a four point proposal for defunding the Police Department:

- Remove Seattle’s 911 dispatchers from police control
- Scale up community-based solutions to public safety
- Fund a community-led process to “imagine life beyond policing.”
- Invest in affordable housing

Hope the pigs enjoyed their summer of gassing and beating the crowd, they are gonna pay for it.

Now we get to see the creative means they come up with to re-line their pockets.
