Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 23

Hasn't he been constantly badmouthing Fox News lately, saying how terrible there are compared to how they used to be, and how much better OAN is?
I'm guessing he's temporarily forgotten that he doesn't like them, and those synapses will eventually reconnect and he'll start insulting them again.

It is not temporarily forgetting. It is all about what have you done for me today - or More precisely, what have you done for me in the past couple of hours. If you run a story he likes, then you are geniuses. If 5 hours later you run a story he hates, then you are morons and you have always been morons. It’s confusing to rational people, but it makes perfect sense once you’ve stepped through the looking glass.

I’m not sure how much of that is keen insight into how American media consumers can be manipulated, how much is “We’ve always been at war with Eastasia,” and how much is just the only management style that he has ever known: employees must be browbeaten into submission through over-the-top insults.

How about all the other coronaviruses? And how do you conclude that these "may not mean much"?
I assumed that the previous post was suggesting that there was a scientific problem why there was no vaccine for other corona viruses. (Like fast mutations).

I was just suggesting that the lack of a vaccine may have to do with the fact they don't have the same urgency for dealing with the other corona viruses (since they affect fewer people) so there are fewer resources dedicated to dealing with them.

It is possible that if they had dozens of labs working on MERS or SARS vaccination development, they might have had one by now. (In fact some of the current vaccine work actually makes use of work done for other coronaviruses).

There is no old coronavirus where vaccine would be profitable. There was development for SARS vaccine, but since SARS went away, there is no demand for it, and all research was stopped.
There are other coronaviruses, but none which causes severe disease.

Ok, thanks.

Still, it is a distinct possibility that an effective vaccine vill not be found, or will take a long time. Vira are notoriously tricky in that respect.

And even if found, production ramp-up to a global campaign will take time also.

Hans
The plural of virus is viruses. The most commonly used incorrect plural is virii. Vira doesn't work at all.

Trump Tweets

NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue. This will further antagonize New York’s Finest, who LOVE New York & vividly remember the....

....horrible BLM chant, “Pigs In A Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon”. Maybe our GREAT Police, who have been neutralized and scorned by a mayor who hates & disrespects them, won’t let this symbol of hate be affixed to New York’s greatest street. Spend this money fighting crime instead!

What is Trump advocating here?

Vira is valid, not commonly used but perfectly valid.

I'm as annoyed as anyone about pluralizing Latin words in an English context (since I do so daily) because the rules get complicated based on common usage but, no, vira simply doesn't stand up at all. It might if the singular was virum, but it's not.

I would not usually be so pedantic but this particular one bothered me. I promise not to correct someone who says they broke both their femurs.

Let's be honest. The real reason he's upset is because Trump Tower is on Fifth Avenue. It's like when he tried to have disabled veteran food vendors banned from Fifth Avenue in the 1990s because he didn't want them near Trump Tower.

Also, "big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign"? I'm guessing that he's not aware that there's already an existing infrastructure for painting yellow lines on streets. That's something the little people would worry about.

Funny fact: in Latin, there is no plural because it refered to an uncountable thing.

In what language? I've never heard it used in English.
I have seen it used in some virus classification schemes.
phylum vira.

I just double checked to make sure my memory isn't playing up, it's not. It was used in the LHT System of Virus Classification at the very least, i'm sure it's used elsewhere too, when talking about all viruses.

Pedants can be wrong. I remain firm that viruses is the correct term and I have never before encountered vira "in the wild" so to speak.

Before this whole side-rail gets shuffled off to AAH this is what I was talking about in another thread that I don't buy the whole "Well technically *pushes glasses up on nose* a group of this particular animal is called a..." thing. The terms are never actually used; casually, technically, formally, etc.

You'll never hear* "A shrewdness of Apes" or a "a conspiracy of Lemurs" or "a knot of toads" in the most colloquial of language or in the most precise of zoological papers or anywhere in between. They literally exist one place and one place only, lists about what groups of specific animals are called.

But I still got a flustered "But... but that's the correct term!" response. How? In what context is a terminology that is never used outside of defining it's own context in which it will never actually be used valid?

*Since someone always brings this up yes you do very occasionally hear "Murder of Crows" but it's always in the context of a joke or a pun or other wordplay still not the kind of thing I'd call an organic use of the term in real conversation.

Hugh Hewitt claimed he heard that Alito is retiring. While Hewitt is known for talking out his nethers, I have been saying for a year now that the GOP will use Alito's impending retirement as a rallying cry for the base or any Republicans still on the fence.

It doesn't need to be true, it just needs to be out there.

Regarding virus, viruses, vira, virea, virdi, virni, virci.

I am tempted to quote Nick the bartender
“ That does it! Out you two pixies go, through the door or out the window!”

But perhaps a more diplomatic approach is to suggest that another thread be started.

ETA: is it just me or is there something wrong with the grammar or wording of that text? I mean, I get the meaning... Bigotry is more important than national defence... But the post starts wandering and never completes its argument properly. Such a genius... Can't even stay focused for the length of one tweet.
It's hard to follow his tweets since his clauses tend to sprout more clauses but as far I can tell it parses OK: He will veto the bill if Warren's amendment is included. The difficulty comes in trying to pack too many talking points into one tweet. BTW soldiers in two World Wars trained at those bases. The name of the base is critical to military operations, apparently.

Honoring traitors is an important U.S. tradition and it must continue.

I have a dream...

That some of the right-wing judges will deliberately wait until a democrat is in the white house again, then deliberately retire. That even though they agree on certain rulings, they see the appointment of gorsuch and drunky mcrapeface as unfairly politicizing the court, and want things to be properly balanced. I.e "I don't agree with liberal interpretations of the law, but I agree even less with the courts becoming seen as a right-wing echo chamber".
