Expanding on my inchoate thoughts of Bush vs. Trump...
Bush secured the presidency via undemocratic institutions and questionable means. He received fewer votes than his opponent, then consolidated power, expanded the presidency, and took the country to endless wars through the usual means (lying). In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, he enjoyed higher than 90% approval ratings and Congress passed legislation like the PATRIOT Act. It was scary **** precisely because so many Americans suddenly supported it.
President Lysol's approval ratings never went near as high. He only knows how to divide; he's incapable of uniting. He has his share of intense followers, but they're idiots. Powerless idiots, mostly. Those in the political class who cheer him on are either self-interested grifters or taking advantage of the Orange nincompoop to achieve traditional Republican goals (such as tax cuts).
Trump's 40% of the country is not as terrifying to me, nor is his evangelical support. I can't help but

when dumb-***** like dudalb do their ****** Paul Revere impression to warn that a Civil War might be coming. Trump can't even open an umbrella; he's not going to set up a shadow government. He lacks elite support.
Trump's lawlessness harms institutions in the long run, but how many people did he kill with his Ukraine swindle? The self-enrichment matters, but how much is he bilking out of taxpayers? Trillions? Not even remotely close.
As with Bush, it's the incompetence that does the most damage. Perhaps the most personally frustrating thing is that he just shouldn't have ~40% approval. He's not slick enough to deserve that much support. Even Bush eventually dropped down to the lows 20s. It's like when Hillary Clinton once remarked about the polls, "I'm up by 10 but I should be up by 50."
